I don't have as much problem with this as most others do. I enjoyed the speed of this GB and the ease of ordering them through a legitimate vendor site. If it makes it easier, you can just add more crystal caps to my order so you don't have to pay the refund fees. Although I don't know how the logistics of that works, admittedly.

This is what I will to.

The thread collected 91 sets of Br Ba Keys.  I will lower the GB price to the SP cost @ 150 which is $1.11 + legend fee of .30 x 2 for the set = $2.62
The crystals I will lower the cost to SP cost @ 500 for R1 (.52), 100 for R2 and R3 (.93), and 250 for R3 (.62)

Before you as, if you already ordered, expect a refund, but give me a little time since I have to re-calc all the orders.

This is my screw up - I will make it right.  There is no excuse other than I was trying to make a little extra to hedge my bets.  I re-invest ALL my profits from techkeys into more keys.  That is fact.  Eventually I would like to make some money, but for now I am just trying to keep the good stuff coming.

I just hope I'm not sitting on a mountain of meth keys when this is over :)
It doesn't matter what tier you are lowering the prices to. All that matters is what did you actually order. Sell at the price of what you ordered and you'll sell a ton. Maybe you will sell out even. There will be people that miss the week window, more people that want to buy after seeing all the pretty pictures that will pop up on the forums, and a slow trickle of sales as new people join the community.

There should have been no hedging of bets, we should have just taken orders and you could have used your invoicing and infrastructure to run the group buy as I'm sure you have done for all your recent group buys where you have extras on your web site. In the future group buys should be group buys and separate from being sold on a web site. I'm not sure how I feel about using group buys to fuel more key purchases to further still fuel more new purchases until you can just turn a profit. I know the intent is good to provide more for the people, but the community should have been included in your plan if you wanted do it this way. Normally people take out a business loan to get a business running *shrug*

So I'll ask again. How many of every key did you actually order? We can't calculate group buy price without that. From looking at what you purchased you will sell out. Although you didn't show a picture of the Br Ba keys.

I'm not meaning to raise a pitchfork, just asking for insight. Maybe ask people if they want more keys before refunding to save yourself some costs. So are we ever going to know the quantities you ordered? I'm quite confident the community will buy up everything you ordered, if not to just stop you from losing money so we can keep techkeys strong. I know I've personally ordered at least one of almost every key you've made available.

i3oiler, I sent you a PM with a "modified" order, I'd prefer that over a refund, especially if it's costing you extra to refund payments :/

With the lower prices and i3oilermaker bending over backwards to do the right thing, I really hope these last until I can get home tonight and actually order some (doing so from work involves certain difficulties atm).

What with everyone saying "I'll buy more now that the prices are lower" and everything ;)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Eating refunds on the money you should not have made to begin with

Once again you did not let this GB to happen the 91 orders is wayyyyyyyyyyy under what it would have been if it was actually done in GB fashion, it could have gone WAY beyond the 150 tier mark. Please adjust it to the tier you purchased it at

I'd have to agree with this.. Pretty sure "orders" weren't taken any more after it was mentioned that it would not be done in a GB fashion..

Please i3oiler just keep my money from the First Order.  I'm not fussed about getting any refund it's a waste of time for me.

I'm happy to pay whatever for these keys.  Although I just put through another Order for more of them, doing two keyboards now.

You see you are not charging Click Clack price tags hence I am very happy with the current/former prices.  Just pack the little beggars up fast and send them on down to Hell-town Australia.

Thanks buddy......

This is pure speculation.  I'm not convinced that a traditional GB would have brought in more orders.  Even if we agreed that it probably would have, there is no way to know for sure.

God what a mess.  Glad I didn't order right away.

I'm glad that you're trying to make good on this but I'm personally put off by the whole situation and even more so as you continue to avoid telling us how many of each key you actually purchased or show us the invoice etc.

If it's a dollar more or a dollar less, whatever. I guess I'm really just one of those "it's the principle" kind of guys. Your original response to "this is the group buy price??" of "yes, $1 is too expensive?" clearly indicates (to me, in my opinion) that you basically figured you would offer the keys at what you thought was a reasonable price while also turning a profit. That is entirely different than everything you've told the public up to this point. You've said multiple times that we would receive the same group buy prices we would have otherwise gotten and we would be buying them at cost etc etc.

I haven't been around here nearly as long as a lot of people have but to me personally, that's just terrible business and speaks a lot for character. I understand that you've run a lot of successful, legitimate group buys in the past, but this wasn't one of them. I don't think you're nearly as naive as you're pretending to be right now; this wasn't a case of making things easier for the community and then making a mistake, it was a case of using these keys to promote your website (all of the notification signups sure are nice) and essentially getting some free money by marking them up. I agree with this:

You basically took this idea from Batmann and he did all the work in the IC, and ran it at your own store. If you feel like you needed the markup to run and maintain your business, then come up with other cap ideas for that. But this GB could hae been ran like a real group buy, without your site.

I'm sure that many of us would be able to understand if you wanted to earn a little from the sales.. I mean come on, not everyone's going to mail out hundreds of packages at the post office and not earn anything. Perhaps putting a note stating that you'll charge a small fee for your efforts before the sales may have calmed the storm a little.

All in all I feel that the prices are much better now. I can almost order double the amount of keycaps with the same amount of money previously.

Maybe we should just let the matter rest now.. What's done is done, but I'm sure boiler has learnt his lesson.

Just a question, the keys will be on sale for the rest of the week yes? Would be getting my pay in a few days now and don't wish for the prices to jump back to $1-$4 before the week is up..

This garnered a lot of attention it would have gone beyond the 150 tier this is speculation yes, but speculation from someone that has ran multiple group buys

We weren't even in ordering yet it was merely a IC and IC gets a lot less order as people know it will happen and when it does happen is when people order, did I speak once during IC as to how many sets I was going to get? How can you say I wasn't going to order 150+ sets? People ordered ridiculous amount of novelty keys nd you can say this is even more popular

But could it be better still?

I'd still like to know how much of each key was ordered. Either say you are still turning some profit for your costs and time (which is fine and ok to be honest) Or just tell us how much you ordered.

Once again you did not let this GB to happen the 91 orders is wayyyyyyyyyyy under what it would have been if it was actually done in GB fashion, it could have gone WAY beyond the 150 tier mark. Please adjust it to the tier you purchased it at

This is pure speculation.  I'm not convinced that a traditional GB would have brought in more orders.  Even if we agreed that it probably would have, there is no way to know for sure.

God what a mess.  Glad I didn't order right away.

It definitely isn't entirely speculation though. There's plenty of posts showing interest that happened after the "Official Tally" stopped being updated. I don't feel like counting exactly how many because it's kind of irrelevant at this point, I'm just pointing out that part of it isn't speculation because there was certainly a decent amount of interest even after it was decided to go up on techkeys. Can we confidently say exactly how many people that didn't show their interest would have ended up buying keys? Of course not. Can we "speculate" that a lot more than what was tallied would have bought some? I think so.

Wow.  If you call someone a liar, you'd better have proof.  Libel.
And did he take over this order by force or did CLiB ask for techkeys to handle it for him?  I haven't parsed the entire thread but if its the later then there is no reason to be upset at anything other than the fact that the prices should have been posted or discussed a long time ago.

Hey !3oiler, do you have a backlit keyboard?  When you have a minute after sorting out orders, I would love to see what they look like over LEDs

+1

Especially red backlit, if possible :)

Nope he did not forced but he did say he was going to order it and offer it at GB price, and clearly we were lied to already. On what grounds do we have to believe him now?

Not letting a GB finish and stating this is the tier you get is down right dirty

I'd still like to know how much of each key was ordered. Either say you are still turning some profit for your costs and time (which is fine and ok to be honest) Or just tell us how much you ordered.

I'm not sure why this is still being avoided =/

Right so someone pays more is classed now by you as a sub-human?

Christ, what about calming the F**K down.......instead of doing the now FAMOUS lynching here on Geekhack, how about just accepting his apology and moving on.

But oh no, let's now run an inquiry/jury/conviction and string him out to die, for everyone to see and enjoy........I can understand why hardly anyone wants to run any Group Buy on here.

People all make mistake's and it's not some kind of Dr. Moriarty-style of manipulation or deceit.  Besides not everyone here on this Forum can walk away being clean and non blemished when it came to running previous GROUP BUYS that were held on here.

Will order soon!  :p

EDIT: Guys, just calm down and lower your pitchfork seriously, I mean I understand what he did was downright dirty, but he apologized and made things right.

i3oilermaker, just don't do something like this anymore, it seriously could be seem as something really dirty to do to gain interest in your website, just come up with some great ideas and I'm sure you'll still be able to make some profit.

I think a problem for me is that this is far beyond what I consider a reasonable and acceptable "mistake". I mean a mistake is like sending the wrong keys to someone, maybe forgetting to put their package in the mail, maybe marking it as shipped when it wasn't, etc.. These are all "mistakes".

This was clearly deliberate, at least in my opinion. He used this groupbuy (which wasn't his own idea) to promote his website, get a bunch of signups, and turn profit. He lied when people started asking questions and only started admitting some sort of responsibility and apologizing when he saw his reputation in danger.

My intentions were to provide a good discount without the time and effort of a GB.

At what point in time did this become the genuine intention? Before or after you said over and over (for a few weeks) that you would be offering the keys at group buy prices? Did you lie from the very beginning, and always intend on turning profit on this "groupbuy" or did you decide after you received the keys that you'd price them at something you considered reasonable and make a very healthy profit on them?

Where on the internet defines noobs as sub-human?  Why are you calling the noobs, as in new members of the forum who knows nothing about running a group buy, sub-human?  That is so rude of you.

You should absolutely buy them if you like the keys and you think the price is fair.

One more thing to think about i3oilermaker. How can you gamble on how many people will buy? You just say "don't worry, everyone that wants one will get one." So what if you run out and people that originally were going to buy from a real GB doesn't get a chance to get one? Does that mean you'll reorder from SP? There are people like Taeyoung that jumps in last minute and orders a sh1t ton for Korea.

And even at your "group buy price", the time window is only 1 week to get it at lowest possible price. A normal GB has the order thread up for at least a few weeks, even months. Yeah you can argue to subscribe and sign up your email to get a notification and yada yada, but you're forcing spam mail down buyers throat so that we don't miss that 1 week window, when a normal GB has a few months window.

Lastly, I'm not sure if paypal changed their policy, but last time I had to refund someone and also someone refunded me, the full amount was refunded, including paypal fees and shipping. Did their policy change withing the last few weeks?
