Title: Acrylic Tenkeyless Keyboard Cases
Post by: litster on Wed, 11 January 2012, 13:37:35
Edit: if you are interested in joining a group buy for a acrylic case that fits a Filco tenkeyless keyboard for around $165 shipped CONUS, PM me.

I just realized that I have been hiding my acrylic keyboard cases in the Phantom group buy keyboard thread (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?23572-Phantom-Custom-Keyboard-Group-Buy-(Order-Only)).

Here are a few pictures of the different acrylic keyboard cases I have made so far.

Can you build a split one for a Kinesis Advantage ?

Post by: litster on Wed, 11 January 2012, 13:50:37
I have a Advantage right in front of me.  It would be very difficult to do it with lasercut acrylic because of the curves the Advantage has.  Lasercutting can only cut in 2 dimensions and the acrylic thickness is the 3rd dimension.  That 3rd dimension can only be straight.

Wow, these are incredibly cool. Do you have the tools to make one for a Leopold TKL? Alternatively, with metal?

You should consider doing a gb for these things, they are nice!

Those are super nice I love the top one with the white and blue trim. I don't suppose that blue trim is LED or better yet Neon gas filled is it ?

It is transparent blue acrylic.  I have also done transparent orange with black (not shown), but it isn't as good looking.

the black+blue and clear are absolutely incredible.  it's a pitty they're so costly to cut.

I like white with transparent blue accent the best.  But the black top works with both black and white keycaps, whereas white top works better with black keycaps IMO.  I could do two color schemes, opaque white/transparent blue, and opaque black/opaque red, then you could swap the colors.  Or I can do full opaque white and opaque black and you can make zebra scheme for both cases.

No, I don't have a Leopold.  It was hard enough to try to make the case work for both Filco and Phantom.  They are supposed to be the same, but there are minor differences.

There are indeed expensive.  I could do a group buy.  But I did some math, it would be about $165 including material, setup fees, laser time, all the hardware to put the case together, and shipping within the USA.  I don't know if it is worth it...

I recently started fiddling with some wood working and this gives me an idea of some nice wooden cases.  I love your idea of the transparent acrylic between the upper and lower which would help alleviate the curvature issue.

Also, very nice pictures.

LOL!  Probably not.  It will either be white/blue or black/blue.  I can't even find red arcylic at the right thickness.  Any color outside of black and white, there are only 1 or 2 thicknesses to choose from and most often they are not at the thickness I need.  Sorry.

Transparent red, possibly.  Opaque red, no.  And transparent red would be more expensive.  Like I said, I can't do one-offs.  For a group buy to work, all will need to be in the same color combo, unless we have a huge demand to support multiple color schemes.

I thought the same thing.  I probably won't be taking the plunge any time soon, but its worth noting that some of these are less than people spend on their gaming rigs.  This company (full spectrum lasers) touts that you can do small production work with some of their less expensive models.  Reviews of the table top models indicate that consistent calibration is the biggest concern, and probably why you would want the more expensive ones.  But still, you could have one of these AND a 3D printer for less than 4K.  Thats pretty awesome.

You mean lazer cutter yeah? Hmm that cheapest model they have is like just wide enough to work with a sheet of acrylic for a TKL.

3D printers are cheaper. I might take the plunge for one at some point. Printerbot/Makerbot. = / still like $1K for one tho.

Man, having once of these keyboard roofs would be fantastic. I've been looking around and can't find any that would work with my new WASD though. I may just be blind.

It's dimensions are about 44.1cm wide, 20.7cm long, and 5.1cm in height w/ the wrist rest on.

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking that somebody motivated enough to buy a Laser Cutter could make some good money on this forum. :D

Anyhow, I've found some shops that will aggressively price laser cutting services.  Litster, do you mind if I inquire about the cost per minute of cutting time with the shop you're using?

I might be able to recommend an alternative, depending or I might want to know who you're using so I can use them too on other projects :)

That company I linked to (Full Spectrum (http://fslaser.com/)) implemented a printer driver for their units.  You can actually "print" in rastor (burn an image) or vector (cut through the material) mode even from MS Word.

You mean the one with recessed screws and nuts?  It does look really nice.  But the problem is with recessed screws and nuts, the screws and nuts can't apply pressure to the top and bottom layers to screw the case together.  So it would require gluing layers together, which would incur more expensive manual labor.  I might do an even smaller batch of that design in the future.  Probably not...

I looked into Makerbot.  Even the newer, larger version is not large enough to print a keyboard in one piece.  Potentially I could design it into left and right pieces and glue them together, but that would probably look pretty awful.

You could glue them together, but require some working afterwards to make it look like one piece. But then you'd have to also worry about how strong that seam is.

By default, it certainly can't.  I saw an interview with the company owner, who insisted (upon the interviewer's remark about its project size limitation) that it could easily be modded to do longer items.  No details on what that mod entailed, though.  He also mentioned some user had added two extra extruders, for a total of 4.  Not sure how difficult that was either.

From what I've asked at the club, they think it's possible. What they extrude is thin enough to make the stem, etc. But It will always need some work afterwards to make it smooth and stuff.

I knew litster made a custom phantom case thread somewhere, and my luck is such that I find it after the first wave of buys is closed. Well, I guess it isn't a bad thing I missed out because I would be looking for the 7bit layout with no separations between the function keys. I know I could just cut up the body, but I dunno how to pull something like that off cleanly. I don't want to end up mutilating such a great looking case.

The only sanding I've done is on some wood for furniture finishing and metal for lapping heat sinks and a computer case mod.. wasn't sure whether the same methods would work for acrylic. Perhaps if I'm lucky, I will find some acrylic somewhere (likely a dumpster) and experiment with it!

Its pretty much the same thing. Its just brasso gives you that extra step if you want smoother than sanded surface. I reckon with a decently fine sand paper you can get pretty nice.

More similar to metal than wood I guess, since for lapping heat sinks, you want to go at least to 800 grit, if up to 1500 or 2000. I'm not so sure about the Brasso, though. I suspect it would cause the acrylic to craze.

I did it before. Its good, but be careful of getting it round the edge and on the surface. Put a small amount on a cloth (no dripping) and like use your finger to support it and only rub the edge. But given that this is on the inside of the case and not very visible. You might just op to just sand it down.

We're having a discussion, and your thing is closed anyway. Not trying to thread-crap. Sorry ><

Biolaser: I'm getting a "7bit" layout, but I haven't decided on a case yet. I really like this acrylic case, but I don't know if I want to spend this much.

Oh, it was all about cutting down that area under the home cluster and above the arrow keys. Someone brought up they have sanded some wood/metal. But the general topic is modding your TKL case to 7bit layout. Tho I think you sohuld just see if you can get enough people to get 7bit.

I thought the same: you could get a regular Filco for this price. But on the other hand, it is a limited edition acrylic case for a limited edition board. I was debating for a while but the latter consideration won. I'm going all out for this board. One sad looking bank account coming up!

Yeah, sorry about polluting your thread. Just wondering what the best method would be to modify one of your cool-looking acrylic cases to fit the 7bit function row and under the 6-pack without mutilating the case... yes this:

No problem.  Cut that section out is fairly easy.  I already made a top layer for the 7BIT layout.  I just don't want to make a separate batch of 7BIT top layers.  Cutting and sanding the regular top layer would ruin it.  You can make it work, but without lasercutting it, your cut edge would be all rough, and you risk cracking it.

Whereas lasercutting doesn't have that effect.  In fact laser-cut edge is shiny and smooth, called.  Otherwise you would have to do flaming polishing on the cut edge, which is hard to get it right.  It would be very hard to cut that section out after the fact without hating the result afterward.

Turned out it was really quick.  Local shop that I can drive to FTW!

Now it is still going to do some magic to make it Filco compatible.  It is going to take me all weekend if not longer.  I still have hardware parts arriving on Tuesday.  After that, I need to put every case together, and then figure out a good and efficient way to pack these.  Then print some labels, lots of tapes, trips to the post office, etc, etc.  So I won't be able to ship these out for at least another couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, Hopefully I will have time to post pictures as I go.

Ragnorock is organizing a group buy of a set of red on black 87-key set with an add-on kit for Phantom (1.5x modifiers and 1x diamond keys).  Also available is a 104 add-on set. There is also an ISO add-on kit if it reaches 15 orders.

I think this set would look pretty good with my black+red acrylic cases.

For the first time, here is the opaque black with transparent red acrylic case.  Keep in mind that the red will actually be darker when a keyboard is installed in the case and block out some light.

Flat screws will require gluing of the different acrylic layers to keep them in place from my understanding. While I'm not a Huge fan of it myself, litster says it doesn't interfere with you when you're typing so that's fine :D

I think if you get the case you can just saw off the screws to make it flat, but like I said glue might be needed

Yes, I'm sure that the screws won't interfere, my concern was entirely aesthetic. I'm also sure that the vast majority likes the aesthetic touch of the screws, not my case though.

I'd love a completely flat acrylic top (not even screw holes), but a flat head embbeded shiny screw would be interesting. I should stop threadcrapping at this point, I'm not even taking part in this buy :tongue1:
Title: Acrylic Tenkeyless Keyboard Cases
Post by: litster on Sun, 19 February 2012, 13:29:00
I made one with sunken screws and nuts.  It looks good, as good as my current design.  But it required gluing the top 2 layers, the middle 2 layers, and the bottom 2 layers.  I made a mess gluing them and it took a long time for me.  I could ask the shop to do but it would cost more labor.

My current design works pretty well.  the case is actually thinner than your regular Filco case.  So even with exposed screws, they don't come up very high.  If currently your palm or your thumbs touch your keyboard's case while you type, then the screws might interfere with you.  But if you do type like that, you are doing it wrong :-).

KL, you got PM.

Saw that last night.  When/if our phantom plates are anodized, I might make a clear acrylic case for my self to show off the plate and the PCB.

Thanks, do you have any high resolution pictures of this? It would make a great background!

Yes.

I also saw this last night: http://www.otd.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=album&wr_id=98215

To do this one, I would need a PCB-mounted keyboard.  I could use a Wyse PCB and saw off the numpad, or just hand wire the switches.  Use a layer of acrylic to hold all the switches.  That layer would be long enough and wide enough to match other layers so the acylic switch plate would just be part of the case.

I don't have any pics. Anyway I don't like the old design of those KBC keys with that TAB key, the oddly aligned Ctrl & Alt and the top aligned F-keys.

Sorry I haven't made the video yet to show how to open up a Filco.  Do you need any help to open it?

Got mine today. Very nice, shiny, and smooth. The cases are very light. Can't decide which one I like better so I'll keep both - 1 for Filco w/ ergo clears and 1 for Filco Zero.

Whew!  So glad that my packaging protected the case well.

You will need a 3/32” hex driver for the screw and a 1/4" socket to open and close the case.

Just got mine today too! Beautiful case (I got the white/blue one, and now I think I should have gotten the black/red too). Initially, I was thinking of modding it to fit phantom 7bit layout, but I don't think I can bring myself to do that! So as tsangan said, into the closet it goes until I get a suitable keyboard.
