As i understand it, SP uses a Roland CNC machine to create a 4"x4" lexan block model of each legend, then a brass cutter to reduce that down. Surely the serifs do not have to be so egregiously castrated!
Look at KBDRUNNER. He has SHARP 90° corners. Not rounded. Obviously, sharp edges are possible.

The font is like that. Most keys have same upper and lower case. But T is different for both upper and lower. I can change that if too many people disagree.

Actually no, if you look at the wikipedia entry, the Exocet font while primarily an all-caps font has substitution for T/+. So while it may be a little odd, it is correct and true to the font.

Yes, notice how all the sharp edges are inside corners of the legend, or outside corners of the keycap/background.
On the bottom of V the inside corner will be sharp, the outside not so much, same with the Q intersect and a ton of other legends (<>DBER ...)

Which color were the keycaps planned to be, btw? You said dark grey, but it would be nice to know how dark (I don't have the sp color palette lying around either, so I can't really check if there are even more than one option D: ).

I doubt ISO will make it (unless it becomes fashion in Korea, that is xD), but if it does — count me in on that. A small left shift is enough for me though to make me rape my wallet.
10key as well, but that might turn out expensive due to the custom legends. But at least Koreans might order it, too, so with let’s say 50 orders it already is more than acceptable (for me), and it should be fairly easy to reach that number. I don’t know how the 10key/10keyless ratio is in Korea, though.
Much like the nav cluster, the 10key will probably be normal font, same color scheme. It's better to have some kind of matching 10key than none at all.
They got fairly cheap with Rag's group buy as well, so I don't think that's a problem.
That's true, but depending on how much interest there is from Korea the numpad would just cost 5-10$ extra with the "right" legends, and roman numbers are just bucking awesome. :-P

I absolutely love the idea, but I'm just afraid of the elegance of this font being lost with all-rounded serifs. Also, whoever came up with the roman numerals row, I wanna buy them a beer :P
Ultimately, I would be in for a 104 set if the prototypes turn out nice. Maybe 2 if the gf likes it too ^^

I pre-ordered the Collector's Edition of Diablo III and I think I should play The Game with this set on my keyboard but main problem is that right now I only have a Japanese Filco with reds and don't have any plan to buy an ANSI Tenkeyless.
I guess I could fit them in the Poker but blue alu case doesn't match the colour scheme of the keycaps :mmph:

To fit on numbers 9-10 I can use a mix of Extra number row and the normal number row so there should be no problem here. Blanks could be possible with red colour or Grey.
I will miss numbers 3-5-6-7-8:
3 - Spacebar with different size that I think is not made by Signature Plastics. Here is a problem.
5 - Single key that could be blank.
6 - Single key that could be blank.
7 - ISO Enter.
8 - Shift that have the size of Caps Lock key, the same used on Noppo Choc Mini and Dox keyboard.
I will miss some keys that SP can make and I can afford the price even if it's high but the spacebar is the main problem that I think can't be fixed. It's quite a mess and don't know if it's worth the effort. Do you know if over at KBDmania people have japanese keyboards? Maybe someone could be interested. It will need 6 extra keys apart from your sets but the spacebar is not possible I think.
I will get the set even if it doesn't fit the japanese keyboard but would be cool.
We can fix 5,6,7 easily with the ISO key. The problem is the Shift key. If we made an "ISO" kit, we could make it the "Compatiblility" kit that will have keys to fit a choc mini as well? I think I'm pushing too far for this. Can't please everyone... = /
I'll have a ponder to a sollution for this. Tsangan did it so it was 87 base + compatibility (winkeyless + other keys) that made it fit a ton of other boards.

I thought about that when I was writing my post so please don't push too far because a unique layout like mine exists, we don't need a R4 here. I will get the set as it is right now, don't worry as the spacebar can't be done by SP for me it doesn't make sense to have all compatible keycaps but the spacebar, I'm too perfectionist when it comes to aesthetics in keyboards and would never use it with an unmatching spacebar.
Dismiss the idea because it doesn't make sense at all. I knew what would happen when I bought that keyboard and knew that my only choice was KBC 108 sets :party:

1) Normal basic legends
2) Exocet Arabic Numbers
3) Exocet Roman Numerals

Basically very soon there will be a order thread (I believe we will use a google docs form) to collect up orders.
Once a time/ammount is reached we will send out invoices to pay for their set.
We'll put in the order to the manufacturer (Signature Plastics).
Then once they're made and we receive it we'll mail them off to everyone who ordered.

I wish those weren't black on red. It doesn't look as good to me when the only thing inverted is the number row. Alas I'm certain that with this many buyers, that change isn't going to happen.
Well my thought is that since everyone loves the roman numerals so much, why not replace the 1234567890 with them on the base set? That was what I wanted instead of red keys.
It is cool that this is a East-West collaboration. It may pave the way to future collaborations like keycap sets using the Cherry replica font we are hoping to make, and maybe even a custom keyboard.

I think the problem is that he isn't always right and feels the severe need to fight about it anyways. For example, if my gf wasn't shy, I'd share a picture of her holding up her keyboard, and I can personally guarantee that she isn't fat, isn't ugly, and most certainly has a higher power level than he does. The only reason he can even claim victory is because nobody else is here specifically to argue and they give 0 f*cks. I have a suggestion. The optional num row (black on red) key caps are really attractive. It is the sole reason why I've decided to join in the MO.
To make the set more "complete", I suggest to have the roman number pad (for 104's) available on black on red as well. I'm sure you can put this as an optional thing (just like how you've made the num pad optional, just that with 2 more choices).
I really really hope you consider it.

As the owner of a red-LED-backlit Ducky Shine which could be made so much more awesome with Exocet keycaps, I have the following queries:
- Would it be possible to produce a set with translucent legends?
- How many would need to be produced to make this worth the time/money?
- How many people would be interested in such a thing?

As the owner of a red-LED-backlit Ducky Shine which could be made so much more awesome with Exocet keycaps, I have the following queries:
- Would it be possible to produce a set with translucent legends?
- How many would need to be produced to make this worth the time/money?

Hi - Sorry, have never participated in a group buy before but looks seriously interesting. I have a question though. Since I have a choc mini (actually in the mail), if I want to order, I should order the base keyset plus the ISO choc mini addon correct?

Maybe I'm going to say something dumb but Do you guys think is feasable to replace "print screen", "Home", "delete" and those keys with Diablo icons?
I guess it would increase price too much but they seem out of place. Maybe there are some standard icons to replace them without going into legends fees that could fit like the handbag.

btw hazel, just 1 question, does the base kit contain all those keycaps in the picture or we need to pay extra for the 1.5x modifier / extra num rows / extra keys?

Fairly cheap, between 50 and 65 bucks not counting add ons or shipping.
The legends will be mainly custom, but with the expected amount of people so far a set may not be too bad, it may cost as low as ~$56/set (excluding shipping). There are currently 140+ people interseted from KBDMania and growing so it should get very cheap for custom legends.

Orders don't start until at least 2 months from now. I'm confident in the abilities of those running this though, it takes forever, but they do their stuff right.

All I'd want to change is make roman numerals in the base set, so everything is consistent... and I won't be getting the tenkey part or the red add on, so its the only way I'd be getting any roman numerals. >.>
The extra number row with roman numerals is not an add-on.
I assume different rows will have different profiles. If so, would you consider making a Colemak kit? :)

My faves: GB/RR for dark, and RA/GX for light (RR/GB second preference, RBV/WW third).
Are those legends different fonts, or is that just distortion due to camera angle?
It's always hard to tell shades of colour from uncalibrated photos on an uncalibrated monitor. My preference would be for a shade in between red and orange. Not pure red, but not bright orange either – one of the last shades of orange before it becomes red. Gives it a fiery glow.
By the way, for showing photos of red, you should save the JPEG images with chroma subsampling off (1:1:1 or 4:4:4), otherwise red goes very smeary, blocky and washed out, which is happening in the red-on-grey keycap photos. IrfanView can certainly do this, as can GraphicConverter; Photoshop typically could not, but maybe Adobe have implemented that now. (I still don't know why red is so badly affected by subsampling.)
the drill size is different over the legends its a mix of 0.012 and 0.015
Is that to say that there is a mix within each keycap, or that one was made with 0.012 and one with 0.015? I only ask because I found the legend on the GB/RBV "W" key very difficult to discern, even in the photos where it's mounted to the keyswitch and there's no reflection from "above".

Actually if you split them, You'll realize that it gets more expensive than you thought because of the split number of orders.
Also it's not just one key you share. You also share the 1x keys to cover the bottom row 1x keys and the extra ones needed on the side.
Actually, the base order has enough 1x modifiers to fit a Noppoo (you need 3), so we only need the right shift in order to make the base set work on a Noppoo. Thats exactly why I stated that It will heavily increase the cost for a Noppoo user, due to raw volume.
(as it is, the base set includes many options altogether...and a single extra key can't hurt, right?)
Will you consider the opportunity to offer the diable / tyrael caps separately by any chance ? I would get more of them if so.
Maybe its a lighting issue, but all the reds look orange to me, or just way too bright in general to match the other keys in the set.

Perhaps it's a little late to add them to this group buy, we wouldn't want additional keys to slow things down at this point... there are a LOT of people waiting on these keys and it's being chaired by the guys on KBDMania (not GeekHack). Perhaps we need to look at a D3 functions GB separately for keys like white Tyrael and Town Portal?
I am really looking forward to seeing the full prototype set. This group buy seems to be very well organized, and not rushed at all. It seems like the organizers are trying to iron out as many of the kinks as possible to begin with. Very impressive.

I have a question, why the T in the Ctrl and the Alt, are different from the one on the T,
but the CRL and the AL are the same with CRLA key on other keycaps?

Apologies, my previous post was confusing.
The thinking was (at the time) that it would be cool if the base kit included the potion key, and the Gamer kit was meant to be extras of 1-4 + Q (since us D3 players are going to be pounding on those keys a lot, they may be the first to wear down :thumb:

There may be a lot of extra keys certain people would want included in a set but not everyone buying the set necessarily does. I would imagine there are a lot of people who do not care for the potion key. It doesn't make sense to force each buyer to pay for one.

Maybe, but you could say the same thing about the Tyrael and Diablo specialty keys, yet we're being forced to buy those as well. The whole idea of this set from my perspective is bound to the Diablo universe, and with that reasoning it seems pretty logical that one would want a potion key to come with any "Diablo III" themed set of keycaps. Otherwise the base set shouldn't include any of the game themed caps IMO.

My only beef is, and IM sure i'm not the only one.. I actually rebound my action bar to sit one row lower..
IE
QWER and then F for pots..
And I moved the portal default away from T (naturally, dont want to start TP'ing in the middle of some carnage.. that would be bad).
I recommend anyone that has played some FPS to do this, if they havent already.. a thousand times more natural..
But leaves me in a pickle for this gamer add on set.. one row lower hmmph. would also mean my potion key, would need an F/J nub or dip..

I have a question, will the ISO kit come with the extra keys for a UK layout keyboard? i.e. the " on the 2 key, the @ on the ' key and the | key (on the bottom left). If not will there be another set available?
There won't be a blank key to replace the 2@ key.
But there will be blanks to fill in the two spots on the lower rows. These would be blanks that would fit the row profile for the:
-|\ key (Row 1)
-#~ key (Row 2)
I'm interested in Base+Iso+Numberpad-Kit. This is going to look very great on any keyboard :-)
It's an interest check the GB itself won't even start until the organizers have finalized the glyphs w/ SP production. They've been working on prototypes so far.
