So you want to buy a Dolch set?
« on: Sat, 19 April 2014, 22:50:46 »
I've seen a lot more interest in Dolch sets recently and I just managed to score one for myself...or will have once it ships.  Here are some of the tips I discovered while looking for them.  I'm deliberately leaving off one tip until I hear back from someone else since I want to make sure he gets his set first and so he doesn't have people fighting for the set.

So here are some of the general tips:

  • Research alternate names for Dolch.  While the Dolch PAC is the most popular unit, there was also a ruggedized unit called the MACH that has the same keyboard and computer, but with a much cooler shell.  Dolch has also been sold under the names of the Inet/Tektronix Spectra and the Finisar PAC.  I know there are others, but I've had a hard time getting confirmation on some.
  • Check Craigslist and OneCraigs.  It's amazing what you can find there and some people are more than willing to ship to you.  I found an awesome TA typewriter set I wanted, but missed out on because I was in a different state.  Sometimes you get lucky and the person is willing to ship it.  I also found an affordable Dolch set that I passed on because I found a marginally cheaper set on eBay.
  • Check eBay and worldwide eBay search tools like GeoShip.  Keep your eyes out for sellers who have Make Best Offer sales.  Auctions are a fool's game.  Some sellers will go for considerably less than their asking price.  The one I'm waiting for took $85+shipping when they were asking $800+shipping for it.  If you go in with ones that failed to sell for $120-150 and actually have one lined up for a decent price elsewhere, many sellers are willing to drop it to a lower price.  Sometimes they're stubborn though and will ask ridiculous prices, even if it's broken or not confirmed to work.
  • Don't be afraid to offer low.  Remember the tech is old in most Dolch units you see for sale with MX switches (those with ML switches are usually the newer ones).  We're talking units with 486 processors (slower than your cell phone) that are no longer relevant for a vast majority of IT uses.  So the prices are often incredibly inflated and unrealistic.  A good baseline price is $75-125.  More than that and you might as well see about setting up a GMK GB.

Hope this helps some people interested in Dolch and I'll add one more tool for searching once I get confirmation from someone else that they got a Dolch set I was looking at.

I like keyboards and case modding.  Everything about a computer should be silent -- except the KEYBOARD!

Hey Ivan while you're at it could you do a Classic Black on two-tone beige with a fixed tab and windows 8 logo?  Or would that have to be a separate GB?

I love how this thread has gone horribly off topic and is, instead, becoming an IC thread.

That's the plan :D

Remind me again why they still have a vendor forum and are still allowed to sell here?

I know it's probably too early for this, but do you have any idea about how much money this set would cost? Wouldn't hurt me to try to set some cash aside....

Please keep this on topic.  If you want to keep talking about a Dolch GB, start an IC thread for it.

Added OneCraigs to the OP since Riotonthebay had to give up on Dolch.

I will buy a quite a few dolch sets if ivan runs it. I have had enough of originative and am looking for backup sets for when the shine begins.

Ivan's dolch gb will be live on gh as soon as the moderators approve it - it's up on DT already if you want a sneak preview  :thumb:

Dammit, Ivan!  You're making it pretty damned hard to get out of the keyboard hobby!

(Beautiful color scheme.  Of course it is, it's an Ivan GB.)

I'm just glad Ivan is running Dolch so that GH can get the colorway out of it's system and we can move onto something new. Dying for some new GMK color combos, the spacebar and Esc packs have proved they have some gorgeous colors on offer.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.
