[IC] ALPS ansi key cap set (07-25 update)
« on: Wed, 17 July 2013, 02:36:12 »
I will try to keep this as simple as possible.
This is an interest check for Alps DCS profile double shot keycaps to go hand in hand with my ALPS PCB/plate project.

Color inspiration

Actual SP color: BFP/GC combo

Divided into the following three sets.

  • Set 1: 89 keys (TKL)

  • Set 2: 17 keys (Numpad)

  • Set 3: 11 keys (Mod kit)

  • Set 4: Vintage set (Mod kit)
  • May or may not be in the final order

Combo stems:
Side stems will be cherry mount only.

07-25 update
Looking into stem locations and stab wire options. Any help/pics of your alps board would be appreciated.

I would take it in the time you say ALPS.

Considering that this is one of the few (the only) ALPS project, maybe the color combo is a bit weird (ie: dolch replica alps would probably have more success) BUT I like it!

PS: I'm updating right now the keyboard color chooser with calibrated colors! Check it in an hour or so!

That second one is sexy.  I might be in for a set depending on pricing and how much money I have at the time.

Mmmm tasty alps key caps.  I like all the color combos. Dolch replica would be even better then the space cadet color scheme.

Did SP fix whatever issue they had with the stabilized keys? Melissa never got back to me about that.

in that set there will be also a 1,75 shift?
Will all the stabs be Costar?

11 keys Tsangan has 1.75u shift.

My vote for stabs goes to cherry mounts (you can use costar or cherry stabs) very easy to find, but standard alps stabs would be fine too.

calavera if this GB is related to the mini you should mention that 1.75 shift is included in the GB.

Consider me in, I have hundreds of vintage Alps switches just waiting for a custom build.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Interested!

And another vote for the gray color option, perhaps a smidge darker, not so washed-out?

I actually like the colour combo in your "inspiration" photo, would love to see a mockup with grey alphas and the blue mods.

they miss tooling for the stems of all keys over 1.75u (just the stems not the whole key)

Updated post with mock up pics to show what keys are included in each set.

I asked Melissa about combo stems and she gave me tier pricing quote on the three sets so I think SP is capable of that at least. I'll update when I get a response of whether normal alps stab mount is possible for the full set. Then we move on to the stabilizer compatibility.

I like the idea of a combo stem, 4 out of the 5 boards I've stripped have had Cherry stabs. Makes life a lot easier as well considering WASD sell the parts dirt cheap.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I would go for higher contrast (and better retro fidelity)

Recently Krogenar scanned the color ring and we finally have some decently calibrated pictures.

I think BFP is a great choice

I think BFK is closest to the inspiration pic. BO comes close in second I think. Not a big fan of all the others.

I picked the closest color and narrowed it down to these:

Fonts don't have to be white either, could be orange.

EDIT: Going through round 4 and found a similar theme has been done.

GC is much better than GSM. GSM almost seems to have a green/blue coloring in it as well whereas GC is a more pure grey.
