filco shift ping.
« on: Tue, 21 February 2012, 09:51:41 »
So I finally got my filco majestouch 2 tkl, and so far I've noticed a little ping noise on the left shift button, it's like a metal sound. I guess this is what everybody calls a ping sound. I don't know if it's me, or if its really a problem, but seems to happen only with that button, the other ones like enter, backspace and the other shift just seem to make more noise than the regular keys but not the same as the left shift. Should I care too much about this? It's obviously a key that I use alot. This is my first mechanical  keyboard but I'm the kind of person that If I buy something that is really expensive, I want it to be perfect. I don't even know what do I gotta do to send this keyboard back if this is actually a big problem.

thanks.

(sorry about my English).

It's funny but now I think the ping is on the right shift, not the left one, although I still think the left makes more noise on the switch or something.. Anyway here's what I have recorded, first one is left shift, and the right one comes after 0.38. I guess you won't find anything weird on the left one, but I'm pretty sure you will hear the ping clearly on the right one at 1.04, more or less..

Hope you can give some help on this, I don't know if I recorded this the right way, hope it helps. Thanks.

they all ping.

don't look for it, and your life will be much easier.

It is funny how people think it is some sort of defect.

sorry guys I am new and I have been reading a lot of these threads and I already read a lot about ping. Although I do not own a filco board. I have read some where that mine is sort of like a cloned filco. I am using cmstorm qfr.

I'd like to know more about this ping. I read that all these mechanical switches ping in someway? -- did i understand it correctly? I am trying to find a ping in my keyboard and I cant seem to find it.

I also don't quite understand all the discussion about this ping. When I buy keyboards I test it and if I notice something I don't like, for example a blue key that doesn't 'click' as loudly as the other mx blue switches, then I'd ask the shop keeper to give me different keyboard. Although I do think it'd be a problem if you purchased the keyboard online or if you had the keyboard shipped - that would be a hassle to handle since the company might ask you to return it at your expense(i am not sure but if that's the case i think that's a bit unfair - best they send a return label)

I have a Leopold and it pings a bit here and there; sometimes it doesn't and sometimes it does. I think its just something mechanical keyboards can do from time to time and it in no way represents a major, and in many ways minor, defect on your keyboard. Often times it is more of a mental annoyance than anything and in my experience once it is embraced it goes away or just stops bothering the user.

I am also thinking that the ping may go away eventually over-time and frequent use? Of course I do not know for sure as I have never experienced it but maybe it is like the sharp and hard edges of the moving parts of the switch.... the hard edges rub and 'snap' but then over time it softens up?

I honestly do not know what exactly the reasoning behind ping is but I can tell you that while my "a" used to ping every time on every press it now no longer does it. I hadn't really thought about it intently until just now and after testing it I do not have any ping.

See that is what I was thinking about. Maybe its like when I first got an mxbrown keyboard. The switches felt a lot harder. Now the switches are softer and easier to press and I could barely feel the tactile bump as I press a key. Maybe its just because it's new...

Don't bother. I bought my first mech board reading no more than a couple threads on geekhack and I was a happy mech board owner. All I looked for at the time as what switch was better for me and which board looked more awesome to me.

Hmmm well I won' really mind finding a ping or two in the switches. I have found other mechanical sounds that is different in some of my keys but really I can't find a ping. All I hear is just a soft friction of plastic on plastic.

For knowledge's sake I'd really like to probably find a keyboard with a ping :D hopefully in another person's keyboard hahaha.

No need to try so hard. It's like learning about lossy audio compression, actively learning what artifacts sound like, then forever be annoyed at hearing them (also end up spending too much money on audiophile equipment). If people are happy with Apple white buds, why ruin their enjoyment?

In a way, be reassured by your ignorance. I can safely say that I'm also ignorant on this particular matter and can't hear a damn difference.

I think most filcos ping. It comes down to how sensitive your ears are so IMO it's subjective and not as bad as some people will lead you to believe

Without giving a FXXK about keyboard ping or ring, here is the difference between the two.

ring is a continuous (or of longer duration) pure tone like sound.

ping is more of a short burst of ringing quality (pure tone) sound.

They are closely related.

Ping and ring are VERY closely related. It's the exact same sound (originating from the switch springs), only some switches have a longer sustain than the others. Filcos are very solidly built, so like a good guitar, tend to have a long sustain sometimes :-)

BTW almost all mech keyboards ping to some extent if you try. I get some ping from all my mech keyboards, and a couple of them (one of my Kinesis Advantage and an IBM mini's) ring, ie the ping sound lasts long, so when you type hard, the sound never has a chance to completely die down, producing a ringing effect.

Indeed they are the same thing. BTW my ALPSulator pings so hard, it produces a ringing effect:

Onomatopoeia is onomatopoeia.

some nomenclatures aren't very technical but purely descriptive basing on the common auditory perceptions.

I do believe the noise people are calling ping OR ring are of the same source and  mechanism. So in that respect, rip, we are on the same page.

Without being too technical, here are some definitions from the dictionary for those who still can't get their head around the difference between ping and ring:

Ring:
- a clear resonant sound made by or resembling that made by vibrating metal
- resonant tone : sonority
- a loud sound continued, repeated, or reverberated

Ping:
- a sharp sound like that of a striking bullet

Origin of PING:
imitative
First Known Use: 1835

You can see that the definitions are rather quite subjective and qualitative, but the key is the sound duration. Ring is longer in duration while ping is shorter. The problem is then how long is long to call it a ringing sound? how short is short to making a pinging sound? That would be up to the individuals. In the end, people may be talking about the exact same thing just with different standards of perceiving the sound.
