I usually only listen to instrumental music (don't like the human voice to spoil my music),
Would it help if the voice wasn't saying words?

Admittedly, with this one, you need to advance to 0:56 to get past the Japanese-language introduction.

Perhaps her most familiar work would be this one:

from a popular movie that introduced a new motto into popular culture.

And here's some more serious classical music by her:

Of course, other artists do this sort of thing as well...

and apparently that group has undergone changes in its membership, so we can go back...

Oh, I see we've even got some head-on competition going on here...

Oh, and I couldn't resist just one more...

Too bad this was not released on CD and I went and bought ever one of her 'live' albums there was to buy:

Still the best rendition I've heard though (but then again I'm biased :P)

Chong, Nice Vid!
She's on Amazon here.
Anybody with a song titled "Venn Diagram" is pretty geeky.

I know, she's like so pretty and awesome at the same time! Geeky but sexy heh
I got all her albums, even the live version of "I Don't Know" with Jools Holland just for that song (of course it was a 2-disc set and there were others too that I enjoyed)

Since we're there: The Cake Sale (Album) is a VERY awesome album - try it!

But that's the most brilliant live version I've heard that makes me so happy that I want to cry!

Oh, here's something childishly good:

Here is the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, with a fine performance of an American musical work that deserves to be kept from obscurity, along with the rest of its composer's works:

And here's a performance with modified orchestration...

No it wouldn't help... not at all. Listening to those made me swear loudly.

I can tolerate the occasional Baroque chorus (as long as I can't make out individual voices), but I still prefer to listen to instrumental music without any singing. I don't like to be reminded that there's a human making the music. I think of music as emotion and logic, not communication or expression.

I like "Space Music" too, but can't seem to find any good pieces. Here's an example that's OK, but it still doesn't quite do it for me.

Music is many things.

We can begin with a nice catchy tune and a beat...

we can proceed to music with a profound mathematical elegance,

but when one admits emotion,

it is unclear how one can exclude expression - or communication, because when an emotion is identifiable, communication has taken place.

Whether with or without words, some music is simply light and pleasant,

and some haunting and poignant.

and some mysterious and hypnotic

Yours truly spent much of Easter remixing the last album of these guys so I could have my very own "audiophile quality" version (which was successful, for the most part at least, but be warned it's not entirely trivial). They'd put up a high bitrate MP3 multitrack version for remix purposes last year, which I found out while going through the CD stacks and adding data for over 100 discs (phew) to the DR database (the Foobar2000 DR meter plugin works reasonably well, except logs in "album mode" seem incompatible).

Other than that, it seems I've been infected by the folk virus.

One of the previously neglected discs that I stumbled upon in the vault contained this nice cover of a Cohen classic:
From this, it's not far to the next song:
Another one of those who were taken far too young... :(

Here's a classic that I hadn't heard in ages, even totally forgotten about, only for it to come back to mind and me finding that I could still sing it and even remember a significant portion of the lyrics (and I'm not exactly a music library on legs). Guess it made a bit of an impression on me back at 13.

I like songs that shine with nothing more than a voice and a guitar. Guess that's why I'm a fan of Suzanne Vega, among others. Speaking of whom, here's one of my absolute favorites of hers, admittedly with slightly fancier instrumentation.

Well, yeah, emotion can be "communicated" (transmitted from one to another through music), but I meant I don't like music being communication as in verbal communication - of thoughts, stories, whining about cheating lovers or bragging about busting a cap in somebody's ass. I don't like words forced on my thoughts. I like to keep my own thoughts in my head and use music to adjust my emotion and improve my logical thought process and memory.

That "Albinoni" piece you posted is actually not by Albinoni. It's a fake - written by Remo Giazotto in 1958 and passed off as an Albinoni piece. There are some great real Albinoni pieces though, my favourites being Op. 9 #3 2nd Movement, #4 2nd Movement and #6 2nd Movement (I Musici, Heinz Holliger version). I can't find that version on Youtube or I'd link it.

Oh, so this was just a plot to make us feel bad about Dresden then...

I liked Suzanne, but I have felt that one can't beat the original, except perhaps with things that come close...

No, my plot was to make you feel bad about not knowing that piece was a fake. As long as somebody feels bad about something...

Actually, I do feel bad about Dresden. Who wouldn't? I read that the entire output of some composers was destroyed. We don't even know what their music sounds like. (...but then again, maybe it was ****... who knows?)

I often wonder how many amazing things - music, art, scientific discoveries, inventions - were lost throughout history because of stupid wars. The stuff we know about today is just what survived. I'm sure there were many incredibly great things that we know nothing about today - don't even suspect existed - because they were destroyed long ago.

Losing sleep over the author of Albioni in G is like losing sleep about Rap sampling.

No, you're wrong there. I didn't lose any sleep over the author of Albinoni's Adagio, but I lose plenty of sleep over Rap sampling - every time one of those deep-bass Rap-playing bastards drives by my house at 3:00am.

(...oh wait, you were talking about "Albioni", not Albinoni. Who the hell is he? Man, I'm going to lose sleep over this.)

A lot of things were, no doubt, lost because of wars. Perhaps more, though, was lost because it never existed - because the people who would have produced these things, from Archimedes to Saki to... Jura Soyfer, to take just one random example, were killed in war.

On the other hand, it does also seem that a lot of scientific advances took place much more quickly because of wars - because nations invest more in research when their survival is threatened, and because some regimes suppress innovation to maintain stability and protect their rule - but regimes are less likely to do that when the threat of war with innovating neighbors means they can't get away with that.

War is a symptom, and it's the underlying problem that causes it that we need to fix.

I couldn't get into "Monster", but "Silent Snow" sounded like jazz.

I discovered that there have been three different English lyrics written for Desafinado... since I'm sure I've already inflicted Laila Kinnunen singing it in Finnish and in Swedish on you, here is this...

This is a version sung with the first English lyrics, under which it became a hit:

Here are the less-often-heard English lyrics, made closer to the original Portuguese ones:

a third version, even closer to the original, can be heard on "Nova Jobim", sung by Lyn Acton.

And here's a Spanish-language version:

... and, apparently, there are at least three different sets of Spanish-language lyrics for this tune as well!!!

Oh, yes: when the Moon is in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars...

This music is not from a Swedish movie, but it is apparently from one in the indicated subject area:

And this popular song which I came across again in my recent searches did come from a French movie with a somewhat adult-oriented theme, even if it is still a mass-market movie:

As for the Swedish artist previously featured, here is a dynamic live performance of hers:

Of course, my specialty is foreign-language cover versions of popular American hits, such as:

Here's a Finnish male chorus singing, a capella, a famous popular tune...

which did once appear in the soundtrack of a Danish porn movie. And then there's this French movie of an adult nature (but not hardcore):

And some music by the well-known composer Francis Lai, from another movie that is controversial even today:

He also did music for the sequel to the previous movie:

Of course, there are those who may feel that they deserve an apology for my posts;

We all remember Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick, and their string of hits with the material of Hal David and Burt Bacharach.

While still wandering in the wilderness before her amazing success with the music of Tony Hatch, a famous and talented singer was bringing some of the same music to Italy:

A while back, I encountered this lovely song, as interpreted by the legendary Lesley Gore:

Recently, looking for other versions, I had some difficulty finding this instrumental version:

And here is the original performance of the original...
as an entrant in the Eurovision Song Contest for 1968, from Spain.

A Spanish entrant in the Eurovision Song Contest for 1973 from Spain also went on to become a big hit:

And now, an additional treat from Europe:

In 1967, on the second day of color television broadcasts in the German Federal Republic using the PAL system, a TV special was aired featuring a large number of famous performers. Here is a medley by Bert Kaempfert and his orchestra on that show featuring three of his greatest hits:

The first song in the medley is "Afrikaan Beat", the second "Wonderland by Night", the third (which appears quite briefly) is "A Swingin' Safari", and the fourth - which I am sure few would have failed to immediately recognize - is "Strangers in the Night".

I had found this version

which includes additional information in the description and comments. The singer, Alizée Jacotey, who, fortunately, managed to reach the age of 18 before this performance (she hardly looks it...) was participating in a telethon to raise money for leukemia research in memory of Laurette Fugain.
