Title: Cherry MX blue, brown or black for gaming and typing?
Post by: jerronchua55 on Mon, 25 October 2010, 09:26:29
Hi guys, I'm new here, and new to mechanical keyboards. I am going to get one soon, but I'm currently deciding whether to get a keyboard with Cherry MX blue, brown or black for gaming and typing.

The reason why I cannot come to a conclusion is because:

1) I know Cherry MX blue has the best feel for typing, but I heard people saying that it isn't that good for gaming, and the clicks, I feel that they are quite noisy after hearing the audio clips on the forum. However, I type in a enclosed room and game till quite late in the night, so since I don't have the keyboard, I have no idea how loud will it be and whether it will wake my family up from their sleep or not.

2) Cherry MX brown is the second for typing feel among the three iirc, but I read that they are very light, and accidental presses can occur just by resting the fingers on the keys.

3) I read that Cherry MX black is the worst for typing due to the strength needed to push down the keys. However, I read that the Cherry MX blacks are the best for gaming?

I'm kinda leaning towards the brown now, but I would like to get some feedback here so that I would not regret my purchase later on. xD

Im using the keyboard for gaming and typing. About 60% of the time in gaming, and 40% of the time in typing. Please advice! Thanks! xD

You won't regret browns. They are only slightly lighter than blues and you'll adjust to the weight anyway. You'll find a pretty even split here between people who prefer blues or browns for typing, and it's mostly over the sound, not the weight.

It's commonly said that blacks are best for gaming; I think it would be more accurate to say that some people prefer them for some kinds of games, but many other people prefer blues or browns.

WRT 2), in my experience they are not light enough to actuate just by resting your fingers on them. The force required is all at the top and after the key is depressed there is very little resistance which might explain why they feel very light. Accidental key presses are not an issue. I game as well as type, the percentages reversed maybe from yours, on cherry browns.

Everyone is quite fond of the Browns around here, and I fwiffo is right about it coming down to sound.

I game on blues and I've had no issues, but they are quite loud compared to any membrane keyboard. Certainly something people in the house notice when I have the door open to the office area. Of course, different keycaps can impact this a fair amount from my reading...

Don't forget the clears.. my personal favourite. The are very good to write on. Personally I think they are better then browns for writing on... I write couple of pages of code each day on clears.

No, it isn't that loud. Blame ripster's microphone. There is no way possible in waking your family up when you're typing. And I have no problem in gaming with blues.

It is light, but it's not that light. You won't have any problem when you're just resting your fingers on the board.

It isn't the best, but still, I won't recommend it for typing.

If you like browns, you have made a good choice then.

blues are pretty loud imo, depends on acoustics they are even loud to me even though i have a 24/7 hepa air filter running and for anyone who knows those things are loud, and even then i can hear blues really soundly when i was testing them on the nostromo.

Short answer: Browns.

Long answer: Browns offer the best compromise between gaming and typing. I do both heavily daily, so I myself bought a filco brown for my daily, and I love it. It pains me to type anywhere else but my room. I think my wpm went up too lol.
