I am currently working on a keycap project and would like to know how may GH fans are indeed Firefly/Serenity fans. This is being used for research for an upcoming SP group buy that I am planning.

These will be PBT DCS Row 1 (F Row & Number Row) + Backspace + Spacebar

Objects in Space Set:

64104-0

Into the Black Set:

64106-1

Okay, so, color rings are in and I will be going with the following SP PBT colors:

WCX - Serenity ship, name, and crew

64108-2

YR  - Extra Serenity name keycap

64110-3

GJW - Jubal Early's (bounty hunter gun) keycap

64112-4

GKP - Blue Sun keycap

64114-5

GQT - All Into the Black set keycaps

64116-6

Shiny!

Firefly’s big mystery: Keyboard sleuth tracks down Serenity’s keyboard

Are you doing a browncoat or purple-belly theme?

Why would anyone want a Purple-belly theme keycap set? 'Er You Alliance?!

I think this would be a keycap set my wife would approve of!

.... providing I don't tell her how much I spent..

Not trying to be a prude, but hiding things from your lifemate is not a very good way to be. Just sayin'

I like keyboards and case modding.  Everything about a computer should be silent -- except the KEYBOARD!

Yeah don't worry about that, it was more of a sarcastic remark. 1) she has a card to my account 2) I earn good money and don't drink so I can buy what I want :p

My only issue is that this keyboard layout and color scheme would be good for the Enthusiast but what about the regular Firefly fan?

If I do a theme, I want it to capture elements for both groups...since the Group Buy will be for the general public and not just GeekHackdom

Define "Regular firefly fan" :P

This is just for inspiration, similar color scheme, maybe a few special legends, and the set should look shiny.

Regular Firefly Fan = Not a GeekHaxxor Fanatic...translation: not that interested in trying to stay true to what was on the ship's keyboard, but would want something that says Firefly...

...and would not say "Hi, I am from the [gorram] Alliance, and I'm here to help. Do you like my purple-belly keycap theme..."

Come to think of it, the Alliance has no need for their own keycap kind...they would just steal everyone elses and use them. After all its for the common good, right!?

Hey, the keyboard in the photo is Wash's. And for the authenticity, the dilemma is similar to our LCARS set, where the question is, is the keyboard something out of the series or a novelty the producers would sell for 10-year olds.

Interested! Just no brown please, because then it will look like that Java one. Keep us posted! I just got my keyboard, so it has all original keys. I would love for my first set to be a firefly one!

So far, I think it will only be several novelty keycaps and a number row + Backspace like the Nyan Cat. I am not really all that interested in doing a full keycap set. As I design these keycaps, I am also getting a lot of other ideas and will likely do a follow up pop culture novelty keycap set as well.

All keycaps will be double shot, sorry PBT Dye-Sub fans!

I may consider doing the Number Row + Backspace design in Dye-Sub PBT, but only if enough people ask about it.

Also, looking at doing some Hebrew keycaps...but again in the Novelty format.

Stay tuned...and keep flying!

Okay so, I have run into a little snag. I need ideas for items from the following characters:

Firefly:

Shepherd Book
Early (the Bounty Hunter)
Miska
Alliance
Reavers

Serenity:

The Operative
Mr. Universe
(And any other item worth noting from the movie)

By 'items' I mean, what would be an object, gun, ship, etc. that would be easily recognizable to each of these characters. I have a few that I have produced, and more ideas yet to create, but since this group buy will be for the fan base, I want feedback to help me generate more keycaps.

And yes, I will be revealing some of what I have created thus far very soon...

Again, stay tuned...

Mock ups will be coming soon...I am still working on them.

I have seen to many ideas get stolen around here, so before I post the mock-ups, I want to be sure that have them all finished.

What I'd really like to see is a silhouette of Serenity on a cap. Is that in the works?

Giving credit where it is due, Graphic Designer / Artist Mitchell Johnson created minimalist posters found at the link below:

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Firefly-Minimalist-Posters/4477331

Once I saw them, I asked permission to use the designs for keycaps. There are several listed in the mock up that are my own design, but had it not been for Mr. Johnson, I would not have acquired the inspiration to undertake this project.

Still there are some other shall we say 'phases' that are still in the works before the big GB. So, stay tuned Browncoats and Purplebellies!

Trouble with that one though is how much detail to get rid of. Hence why I opted for the strawberry for Kay Lee...

Now as I determine what other designs I want to incorporate, I have hit a bump in the road. I want to make these double shots, but I believe I will have to severely limit the detail of the 'legends.' Not to mention, I will need to make them smaller and centered. So, I have two questions to pose to all of you, should I move forward in Double Shot Land, or should I convert everything to Dye-Sub World? And, what profile should I do these novelty caps? I want to do DCS Row 1 but, it appears that DSA will give me more room for the 'legends?' Need I remind the general populace of GH that I am a newb to all this keycap GB and IC stuff, so any and all help is certainly appreciated. Thanks.

Working with such detailed icons in double-shot is very hard. You need a lot of work in the design phase. Have a look at the Skull Squadron set, even the simple red logo had to be simplified a bit. My suggestion would be to go dye-sub for more creativity freedom.

Regarding key profile, in the long run I believe that DCS is your best bet, no doubt about it. Row 1 and WASD if you want.

That being said there's the Granite set running right now that is going pretty well, if you can set your GB quickly you could make take advantage of the wave and I would be pleased to push it in the granite thread (we even already have the blusun logo).

Thank you for the offer, but I don't know if I have the time to get it ready before your Granite GB runs out. I am also having to wait on a certain somebody to help me with the design of another group of keycaps that will be featured with the Firefly/Serenity GB. In the meantime, I will more than likely be trying to work on getting my Torah Fan GB ready. Those, I will do all I can to make them Double-Shots.

no need to finalize the GB before the end of Granite GB, but if you are planning to make it PBT+DSA (and maybe some keys in GKK) I'll be more than happy to push your set.

btw, good luck with your GBs!
