Topre sliders, MX caps
« on: Tue, 18 February 2014, 06:01:00 »
Here they are. It took me some time to refine them and they still need some very small updates... but THEY WORK!

If I can find a way to mass produce we could set up a group buy, otherwise I will simply mold them in epoxy resin and take them for myself :D

What are you, a witch or something?!?!?

Nice work mate, I would be willing to put down money to make a mold and get these things made. I wonder if SP could help us?
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I'm thinking that would be a 10's of thousands investment.

But these are definitely on my want list!

yeah I think SP could work on the mold... and being so small it wouldn't cost that much.

only problem so far is that to remove the original slider you have to break the small "talon" on the barrel. I'm studying a non-destructive solution.

Cool! I've removed all mine before to do the dental mod. I'd love at least one of these for the Esc. :)

of course we also need the stab slider, I have to design it yet, but the 1u is very promising :)

I've only removed sliders from the HHKB and I didn't notice anything breaking.

just a heads-up for all those topre lovers... most topre keyboards have a 6u spacebar which is not very common... guess why I'm running the Skull Squadron set that includes a 6u spacebar? http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=54334.0

Molds are expensive, no matter the size.....

How are you making these now? They look like really nicely 3d printed parts, but they could also be a mold....

They are 3D printed in what Shapeways call Ultra Frosted Detail I believe.

Wow, they look REALLY good. I just must be used to 3d printers with really low resolution/prototype speeds.

aka FDM printers. There are better technologies and brands out there ;D

Sadly, in order to make these truly affordable molds will have to be made. The upside is that the fixed costs in the mold can be spread on what I assume could be hundreds of sets á 100pcs/set. Cooler Master won't be very happy though.

Shapeways has this material called Frosted Ultra Detail, it's the only one you can use with the topre slider. When I opened the box this morning I was completely blown away. Really impressive quality but it also costs x5 compared to any other material.

Consider that my first try done with a standard material (also rated high quality) was a complete disaster, so I wasn't sure it was going to work.

Anyway the model has still some very little errors, as soon as it's 100% perfect I have no problems at releasing the 3D model.

I've used shapeways before. You should just upload it there when you finish it and I'd love to order through them again!

the dent is totally unneeded, as I said I believe it's something that they use during manufacturing (probably for plate mounted topres, since HHKB seems not to have it).

I recently modded an hhkb pro 1 with 30g silent, and both boards had the bump on the stem. Felt horrible everytime I popped the stems out :(
Even after the fact, the bumps are still big enough to hold the stems in though....just easier to pop out again.

I can't sell those yet but if you really want prototypes can be bought at around $5, but you should probably wait for the "production" samples.

NovaTouch will be available in May/June. My final proto will be ready next week. I just have to find a way to produce them at a reasonable price. There's a company near here that makes fishing hooks. They can make the mold and cast in ABS (or even PBT). Last time I checked the mold was around 1000 euros, I'll let you know.

Just as long as you are not treading on anyone's IP toes with this.

CM might have patented this slider design for the Novatouch.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Wouldn't CM be stepping on IP toes by combining both designs from 2 different companies if not licensed? :P

They might have licenced whatever they need to, what with being a big company who have been designing this probably for months.

CM is not the only company working on that slider. Noppoo is also working on it and actually they already released a couple of prototypes.

Other than that... do you believe that CM would destroy its reputation by suing a community-not-for-profit project targeted to people who already have a topre keyboard? don't think so.

PS: btw, I've also asked to an EU CM representative

PS: btw, I've also asked to an EU CM representative

This is a great idea, and I'd hate to see it fail because of some stupid IP or patent or something.

I took the sliders out of my Realforce 87Us this weekend no problem. I'd love to get one of these for my Esc. PS You don't have to cut them. I used the bottom of my plastic PS3 Controller screwdriver. It pushed the sliders right out of the housings without ruining them.

more info/pictures/video needed :) I tried with a plastic screwdriver but it really didn't work out for me.

Just as long as you are not treading on anyone's IP toes with this.

CM might have patented this slider design for the Novatouch.

They can't as I have posted about my attempts at this years back. Since there is prior material on the idea, it is fairly easy to void any such patent should they attempt it.

Oh my God the future is now. I'm even more glad I recently bought a HHKB.

Wasn't that noppoo keyboard the one people took  the sliders off of and put them in their topre keyboards?
