I love my Mont Blanc pens :) The fountain is my favourite and I just need the pencil to complete the trio.

I don't have any fancy pen/pencil. I mostly use bics, because they are cheap as ****, write in almost all conditions, and are hard to break.

But I'll buy a nice high end mechanical pencil one day.

Omfg jetpens! Oh man, I love that site <333

I have multiple Slicci 0.25mm gel ink pens of various colors that I love using. My favorite mechanical pencil is Pilot Airblanc 0.3mm. I have a white one that I've used forever and a big mono eraser. I never use the erasers on mechanical pencils.. they're so tiny.

My go-tos:

Ballpoint: vintage Parker Jotters w/ Fischer Space Pen refills
Fountain pen: Parker "51" (vintage only)
Mechanical pencil: Pentel P205

I have others, but I like to keep my tools (whatever they may be) pared down to the essentials, and I could happily live with these three.

I used to like roller balls best, but once I started using fountains, I stopped using them entirely. I've never been a fan of gel pens. The line width and color is too perfectly uniform, and I guess that's part of why people like them, but I feel they have no character. The Pilot G-2 is a modern legend, but it does nothing for me and I don't even own one.

The Parker "51" is my favorite fountain pen. The hooded nib does a great job of keeping the pen from drying out too quickly when uncapped, making it practical for real-world use, and the fact that it doesn't look like a normal fountain pen allows me to use it on a daily basis in front of others without feeling ostentatious (which I would with a "traditional"-looking fountain pen). And most important, it writes well and is comfortable in my hand!

The Parker Jotter appeals to me in part because it's been made continuously since the 1960s. It was the first commercially successful ballpoint, and amazingly the same model (altered only slightly) is readily available today in any stationary store! Throw in a Fisher Space Pen refill, and I have something that fits in my pocket, is comfortable in my hand, and writes in as many conditions as you could expect from a pen. And it is as appropriate in a formal meeting as it is on a street corner. If I could have only one writing instrument, that would be it.

I have three "51"s and about half a dozen Jotters from all different eras. I won't be needing any more pens for a while!

I use an old Pilot G2 0.7 from time to time, and it seems kind of scratchy. Is that just because it's old? Would I be content with a new one, or should I look for a smoother pen?

Two fountain pens, a clear plastic Lamy Safari for regular use and a Palladium/gold Dupont Gatsby for fancy/suite use.

Mechanicals i have quite a few, mostly used are my Rotring's especially the basic good ol 600.

Been using this multi pen for a bit over a month now, I love it for the fact that it has 3 slots yet is the size and width of a normal pen. The refills don't last long very long and get a little pricey but it's just so nice to use and has one slot for a mechanical pencil so I can just carry the one pen.

Pens: Muji Retractable Gell-ink Pen
Pencils: Pentel e-Sharp, (Staedtler Mars technico when I'm drafting/drawing)

I used to use the G-2 as well, but I found the Muji pens feel just as good but seem to dry faster and don't tend to flow as much which I like. You can also get them in pretty much every colour. They're also cheaper, something like 10HKD when I bought them, around $1 each.

Fountain pen with GOOD ink!

Is there any other kind? Why on earth would one put bad ink in a fountain pen.... Its not like ink is that expensive when you think of how much you can write with an average bottle.

I'm a big fan of the LAMY2000 series. I like their sleek and inconspicuous look. I've got the "Makrolon" version of them in most pen/pencil styles.

This is an interesting one I got recently. The ink truly disappears without a trace (to my naked eye at least). It left some yellowing on newspaper paper, but on standard copying paper it was impossible to tell there had been anything written =)

I know this is off topic, but I'm just piggy backing the thread.

Been a fountain pen user for years and there is no substitute for them. I would be embarrassed to say how man I have collected over the years and the value today. Vintage is the only way to go. Have a lot of vintage ball points as well, but when you are sitting there writing with a 14k "flex" nib from the '30's there is nothing better. It also improves your hand writing.

For what it is worth Monteverde makes a real nice liquid or gel refill for Parker, Sheaffer, Waterman, Lamy and so on ball point pens. It's typically what I carry when I leave the house.
http://www.coloradopen.com/category/parker-style-ballpoint-refills

Nothing against the new age liquid ballpoints, gels...........FP's are just a preference and can be a very expensive hobby to get into. Most people these days just can't fathom using a pen you must fill with ink. I've been picking them up since I was a kid.............we don't want to go there:>}

As with any hobby, explaning why a certain item costs that much is always fun.

Expensive keyboards, a €300+ PC-case, pens, down sleeping bags (yes it's almost nothing and yes it is expensive) or even bikes and cameras.
Even my mom, who is used to my tastes in outdoor gear by now, got scared when I told her how much a certain backpack would cost were it not on sale.

The only way to show them why it is so expensive is to let people use it.

I can't recommend the Pentel EnerGel pens enough, for a leftie like me they're just amazing. Smoothness of ink and hassle-free as a ballpoint. I use the 0.5 mm for lecture notes, which I take a lot of.

As for pencils, I also use the Pentel P205/P207, they where the ones that made me try Pentels gel pens.

For ballpoint it's swedish government issue Ballograf Epoca, nothing fancy but nice and reliable.

I adore Mont Blanc but I am a Parker person myself (not the cheap models). I cannot remember who makes my pencils but they are very unique. I'll have to look at the packaging next time. They're technically drawing pencils (I do prefer mechanicals for writing but I have a range of brands I go through) but they are wooden and beautiful and I absolutely love them.

Aaaah the 800. Thought about getting one of those but then i had horrible dreams about colleagues borrowing my pen and then have them press down on the tip like crazy to make the lead come out and break it in the process.... Dunno how likely this is but i went with my good ol 600 just in case cuz thats more solid than a rock.

Do you notice any play in the tip when using it? I heard that could be a problem with these models....

I don't do enough writing to justify going crazy with pens, so my favourite writing tool has for the past few years been a rather uninteresting Caran d'Ache ball point pen.
On the other hand I dabble enough with drawing to have more pencils than I need, recently picked up this thing and it's my favourite drawing tool so far.

Well, during the GH outage I began my quest for better writing instruments.  I just ordered a Pentel Sharp Kerry mechanical pencil, and I have an assortment of pens that I am testing out here at the office:  Zebra F-301 ballpoint; Pilot G-2 (0.7 size); Uni-Ball Jetstream RT (0.7 size); Uni-Ball 207 RT Gel (0.7 size); and Pentel EnerGel Needle Tip retractable (0.5 size).  The Pentel EnerGel Needle is the hands-on favorite thus far.  I think the 0.7 size is too large . . . the other gel pens tend to create more blobs of ink even though they all write very smooth.

I am also on the lookout for a good EDC pen, and I'm debating whether to get a Zebra F-301 Compact, a Fisher X-Mark, an Inka, A Fisher Bullet, or a Fisher Trekker for use as a daily pocket carry pen.

I just discovered the jetpens website and holy crap what a selection.  And much cheaper to get into pens than keyboards and keycaps lol.

Staedtler 6B, Derwent 12 degrees <- Used these for college. I remember we were only allowed to use 6b on one subject. We were supposed to develop hand control so we can shade lighter values with the soft lead.

Prismacolor Col-Erase Non-Photo Blue, 0.7 Pilot Color Eno Blue, 0.5 2B leads paired w/ some Rotring thing (can't remember exact model), Steadtler Mars Lumograph 2B <- used these back when I used to work in an animation studio

Nowadays, I just use my Wacom tablet for work.

Reading this thread makes me want to spring for a Staedtler Mars Lumograph 16 degree set and some Staedtler 925s

Just placed an order with Jetpens.  I am trying to find a good daily use pen (and an EDC pen), and there are plenty of choices out there:

I'm a Sailor fountain pen ****. I use a Sapporo in fine nib and a Pro Gear with a medium nib. I have a variety of ink colors, but I prefer black, dark blues, dark greens.

I have a Zebra Tect 2way with .3 mm lead. Love how small I can write with this too. Even used it to color in on my PBT engraved caps because I didn't like how close they were to blanks. linky for color

I have the same pencil and it's great. The best mechanical pencil I've ever used and .3mm lead is also great.
