Leopold FC660C -- in love again
« on: Mon, 14 April 2014, 23:04:44 »
Just unboxed a new Leopold FC660C (Topre 45gm, unprinted 66-key mini). Fits RIGHT on top of my Mac Book Pro Retina; only needed to switch caps-lock and control ('cause of emacs) and I'm in love again. It's smaller than my Realforce boards, but has the same switches, which I like a tiny bit better than the Cherry Browns and Blues (but I love those too!). I like my Happy Hacker Pro2 also, but it doesn't fit cleanly on top of the MBP keyboard without nano-positioning, and, unless I'm living in emacs, having to press "function" to get (the annoyingly necessary) arrow keys is slightly annoying.

Ok, I know I am splitting hairs about which perfection is a better perfection. All four of the above-mentioned boards are 0.01-percenters :)  But this new one is tops by a hair.

I would have gone for one of these in an instant if it had been available in white.

Instead I ended up with HHKB.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

FC660C is legit. It feels great, sounds great, and is just built so nicely. And dat form factor. I frequently use the same setup with it on top of my Retina MBP. Winnnn

Wait… you don't live inside of emacs?

;)

I use a HHKB and have basically the same setup. There's a small amount of nano-positioning (I love this word) that I have to do when I set it on top of my laptop keyboard, but I added some larger rubber feet to the bottom which helps a lot with that.

The Leo seems like an awesome board though – everyone seems incredibly happy with it. I'm quite tempted by the blank version…

(emphasis emacs):

There are only two things I haven't been able to emacsulate (beat into submission so I can drive them entirely inside emacs :) so far -- corporate email and Mathematica. The setup to get through all the proxy and VPN hoops for "NotMuch" or some equivalent email client in emacs is just too much of a time sink (and it has to be redone too often), and half the value of Mathematica is the graphics-enabled notebook front end. But hope springs eternal and one day I shall emacsulate them too :)

emacs live is a game-changer, btw. I switched over all my customizations to it https://github.com/overtone/emacs-live

I used Emacs Live when I was getting started, but have since stripped it out in favor of old school, hand-rolled elisp in the form of a single file.

I have one like that, and sadly they do fade after a while; mine faded in less than two months of use. The caps are good either way, though.

Linkbane is quite right, the legends on the non-blank variant are not the most durable -- perhaps buying the blank (FC660C/NB) and a set of the black on black hhkb caps would be a decent compromise? I've considered doing just that on more than one occasion. Love the black on black caps.

Another extraordinarily pleased FC660C owner reporting in. Seriously contemplating the dental band mod on this as my next experiment.

Yes HHKB or realforce Keyset looks and holds up perfect. Dental bands + krytox lube sounds and feels amazing.

Does it have to be Krytox lube? I've got a tube of EK's Mechlube 2 and I was wondering if that would suffice for this nifty little mod.

I used to have that lube (only put it on my stabilizers though) but no one here had any reviews on it so I tossed it and got the Krytox lube from Originative/ Techkeys. Ive ordered from both. It comes from mkawa either way I believe.

The common wisdom is that the EK stuff is good for nothing except for stabilizers, while Krytox is good for everything except as a personal lubricant. Or maybe that too. Hmmm…

Ah man, both are beauties, but I have to say I'm drooling over that Leo. I love purple!

Good question, dustinhxc. I have to say this one is going to be for work, at home. Hah! I will most likely use it in a "lab environment" I am setting up for study.

Can't wait!
