Need Advice for a Beginner (Turkish Layout)
« on: Sat, 19 April 2014, 02:18:58 »
Hi all;

Since 96 I used several keyboards. Mitsumi, Pleomax, Dell, Apple, Hp, Logitech, Microsoft but after I noticed this world, it is a new era for me.

Attached image is the standard Turkish keyboard layout.
I use cad software for 6-7 hours and spreadsheets for 2 hours at least daily.
So the native language characters are so important for my job.

There are so much to learn from this forum but I need a start point for my needs.

Thinking of a TKL keyboard for now. HHKB or Poker like keyboards will probably slow me down as they have so many function keys.
Probably Cherry browns are suitable..
What about the keycaps? I hate stickers so laser engraving or paint job is needed.

Please guide me for vendors, sellers or sites..

Mech keyboards usually have only standard QWERTY (US) layout and therefore keycaps, but you can set your country layout in the OS and then touch type, regardless of the legends printed on the keycaps.

If you need legends to type, then you have to buy Turkish keycaps.
Keyboard: Filco MJ1 104 brown, Filco MJ2 87 brown, Compaq MX11800, Noppoo Choc Brown/Blue/Red, IBM Model M 1996, CMStorm Quickfire Rapid Black
Layout: Colemak experience, speed of 67wpm

That's the point I need help.. No one has Turkish Ready layouts to sell.

So some alternatives, experiences good or bad results would be very helpful..
Dye sub vs Engraved vs Etched  vs .. which one is logical for just one set of keycaps..

Besides someone using autocad can share experiences with the brands or anything related with mechs..

I think for such a "rare" layout you should consider WASD Keyboards, they can make you keycaps with custom printing. You could also look for used Cherry G80 or G81 keyboards on Ebay that have a Turkish layout.

Layout and keyswitches are more of a matter of taste.

Custom keycaps can be unnecessarily expensive. If you stick with Turkish layout, I think there's almost no practical solutions available.

Have you tried using US layout and a software such as Autohotkey to type Turkish characters?

You can use Autohotkey like someone else mentioned. As for the caps, just use blanks caps and not have to worry about the characters.

Selam bu arada.
IBM Model F | IMB Model M | Poker II MX Brown | Poker II MX Clear | Filco TKL MX Brown | Bastardized Razer Blackwidow TE MX Blue | Logitech G602 |  Cyborg R.A.T. 7 | | Logitech MX518 | Icemat  | Artisan Hien

I didn't have time to check autohotkey but; this keyboard will be rarely used by my wife also.. so blank keys and software based solutions are not an option..

In the end everything is getting clear day by day..

As I don't have any options to try different keyboards I'll pull the trigger for Filco Majestouch 2 TKL Browns. I've read so many good comments about it..

Custom keyset from WASD is a must. But have questions about it also..

I checked the designs that were made by others but none of them choose the font used on the one below.
I think that's Helvetica and curious about: is it because of the shape of the keycaps or something else?

I plan to use the above color scheme or the one below:

hey jellyrok, like others have said, your best bet is WASD keyboards, they have some templates you should start from, you can find them here http://support.wasdkeyboards.com/customer/portal/articles/1380026-layout-template-files

let me know if you need help with the layout

I'm not sure if I understand your question. The keycaps you posted were not made by WASD.

You are right; I just mentioned the "color Scheme" not the keycaps itself..
