To those who've changed LEDs for individual switches: which LEDs did you select, spec-wise?  I'm interested in trying to swap some to orange and a few to green.  I don't know how well that will work if I don't swap the resistor, and the original LEDs are purple or white.

They DO go well together! :)

Wrong profile, but this is one time I suppress my OCD tendencies.  I like them that much.   :p

I feel like nobody's have done that yet... only Duckies original prototypes... I might be wrong T^T

I swapped the white LEDs on my Shine II with the red LEDs from my QFR.

(More pictures in this post: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44203.msg921827#msg921827)

I tested the voltages on the boards:
  • Shine II (white white LEDs) -- Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock: 4.2V (these are always at maximum brightness regardless of the brightness set on the kb)
  • QFR -- Caps Lock, Scroll Lock, and Win Key Lock: 5V

I didn't mess around with the resistors anymore...what's 0.8V between friends? :))

Anyway,  it's been about 2 months and the LEDs are fine...haven't burned out yet!

Yes, but which LEDs did you get specifically?  I've gotten and experimented with T-1 LEDs from mouser.com but for a different board.  I'm not sure what the best shape wold be for Ducky LEDs.

I just swapped the stock LEDs from the QFR and the stock LEDs from the Shine II.  Yup, the size is 3mm or T-1.

By shape, do you mean the LED itself?

Both the stock LEDs I used had domed tops:

There are flat-top LEDs but I haven't tried these.

From what I know, the difference with domed top and flat top LEDs is the spread of the throw of light.  Can't find a picture for reference at the moment. :(

Anyway, good luck and let us know how things go! :thumb:

Swapped to all-white caps for now to change it up!

Dim lighting + LEDs on the 3rd brightness setting:

Lookin' good!

Now I wish I got white caps...and a Shine II TKL instead of a QFR :))

Some more photos I took before I packed it up :(  I am so very sad: it's getting traded for another Ducky Shine II keyboard (full-sized) with a member here--for my OH.  He prefers full-sized keyboards, and I've been trying to get him into mechanicals.  He likes Clears, but does not fancy the Filco I've customized for him, because it's TKL.

Anyway, last photos :(

I hope it will find a loving home ;)

Well, a new addition to our "keyboard family", a full-sized Ducky with MX Clears for my OH

(he likes full-sized keyboards)

Interestingly, I never really tried stock MX Clears before.  I modded them to 62g ergo-Clears right away when I put them into my Filco.  I did not care for ergo-Clears, as they seem to lack the solidity and coherence of stock Cherry switches.  What a surprise it was when I tried this keyboard with stock Clears, and it felt great!  And I normally love very light switches, like Browns and 45g Jailhouse Blues.  Stock Clears is how Clears should remain, in my personal opinion (though I'll try 60g springs in my Filco soon).  They are great!  Such a solid and satisfying bump and vertical motion (whereas ergo-Clears feel kind of loose and wobbly, though they are definitely not actually wobbly--it's just the long bump).

I don't know what I'll do with this keyboard yet.  Need to decide on a color :)

(Also, have I mentioned I love Ducky keyboards?  I love Ducky keyboards!)

I hope he likes it, I love stock clears and use that same keyboard everyday.

Here it is with my newest keycaps....with an obvious missing key...hopefully sherry gets back with me soon.

LEDs are kind of odd when it comes to color temperature.  White LEDs are usually quite bluish, and that's what you're seeing in that photo.  The LEDs are white, but easily look blue when photographed.  Purple / pink LEDs are difficult to portray accurately, and Ducky's blue LEDs have some violet tone to them, so they can look purple-ish on photos.  The only unambiguous color is green :)  Red can come out looking orange or washed out / pink.

I read somewhere (here) that the Shine 3 blue LEDs are really bright blue, but the Shine Zero blue LEDs are a much paler blue.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Great combination!

I wonder what pink and purple, in the conventional purple modifier combination, would look like ...

Oh man, looking at that YOTS, I'm so jelly right now.....can't wait to get mine. Pre-ordered and fully paid for mine.....with Cherry Blue switch. Also awaiting BL's Miami key caps to be made and shipped, my DK9008 is painted white because of those awesome key caps.

that pink and purple  :p
better white caps for that YOTS i think :)
Yeah I feel like it's not still the good combination on an alu case color...
I've been backed to traditional Checked which is black and white but still...

I wonder what pink and purple, in the conventional purple modifier combination, would look like ...
What combination?

I think he means something more along the lines of this

Here we go!
but lights turned off I feel like a light color case doesn't suit very well...

You did that for me (more or less)?  Wow - thank you :) :-*

That combination looks really great - better than I expected.

The 4 extra keys above the numpad in pink I think suit it much better than if they were purple.

And on a YotS too!

Almost enough to tempt me away from my pearl and pebble Model M :)

All this talk on the forum about shades of purple makes me think of this commercial:
:)
iONE XArmor U9BL-S (Cherry MX Brown)
Deck Legend - Ice (Cherry MX Clear)
Leopold FC200RT/AB Tenkeyless (Cherry MX Brown)
Leopold Tenkeyless modded by Clickey (Cherry MX "Ergo Clear")
Ducky Shine 3 (Cherry MX Blue)

I'm a fan or browns myself.  Got a full-size shine 2 with white LEDs and a couple of modest mods.  You got any plans for modding yours?
