Title: [CANCELLED]"Toro" Groupbuy [Hosted by KeyPop.net]
Post by: KeyPop on Wed, 13 March 2013, 03:11:36
This groupbuy has been cancelled

Thank you to the person who shut down a near successful groupbuy.

UPDATE: We are not going to revive this group buy.

KeyPop.net is hosting their first groupbuy!

This groupbuy will be a joint effort between reddit and geekhack.

We figured since this was our first groupbuy, we'd release a design that we have been working very hard on for the past few weeks!
We present you with the

"TORO" Keycap
This keycap will be Doubleshot/ABS for the R4 Row(Esc / Number Row)
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/InSenG/ToroOrigPreview.png?t=1363157656)(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/InSenG/Toro2Preview.png?t=1363157672)(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/InSenG/Toro3Preview.png?t=1363158494)(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/InSenG/ToroGWPreview.png?t=1363196870)
Although some of you are familiar with this creature, we've named it "Toro" for specific reasons. Please only refer to it as Toro and nothing more.

Attention please read!

-All shipping prices will include an extra $1.25~$1.50 compared to our vendor shipping prices to compensate for our time and work towards organizing the groupbuy.

Lol I have always loved this creature  ;D

Looks awesome. I will opt out on account of I have bags of keypop keycaps lying around :) Will restrain myself. Though I am still contemplating an entire F-row in blue mana bottles.

No worries! We're confident these keycaps will hit the $0.51 cent mark by the deadline. You'll have plenty of time to think about it.
After the deadline we will be selling extras at our store.

Is that a donkey?

It's a character from a very popular animated film. Not a donkey but sort of a hybrid between a rabbit and bear.

Are you guys thinking of other variations since this has been super popular so far? Maybe a white on black?

We originally wanted to release white on black but oh god it looked horrendous.

We're open to other variations but we chose these specifically because they are most accurate to the originals(with the exception of the black)

Edit: For those of you curious as to what it looks like
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/InSenG/ToroWhitePreview.png?t=1363192389)
If we get enough requests we'll add it to the groupbuy.
Please let us know!

Wow biggest GB yet.

And I haven't even placed my order yet! :D

Don't care for those two new mockups you did, something eery about them. Kind of like the black eyes make them evil, and the belly spot becomes a big Kirby mouth sucking up souls.

Perhaps you could try a leaf green on white cap? Something kind of forest-y?

The reason for green, this is on the T-shirt I'm wearing right now (http://www.threadless.com/imgs/products/2896/636x460design_01.jpg)

We'd really like to, but by the time we can produce a suitable image/svg for the design, the groupbuy will be halfway done..Don't worry we have more similar keycaps in the making that we'll be releasing slowly.

Coz these guys need a home on a cap (http://www.mangauk.com/gallery/albums/album-18/lg/530208_orig.jpg)

OH! Have you tried the white on a light grey maybe?

I'd be in for a dozen nice, white on dark green Toros as well  (Dark green on white, too!).  Not crazy about the black one, but golden would be fantastic.

Hi! I want to make an order too, but I want to wait until the 4th type is released. My vote is for Green on white! Should this pass I'd be ordering at least one of each! Hope there is a reminder from Keypop to their subscribed fans that a new Toro type will be available so I don't happen to forget! Kind regards!

We will continue taking count on the demand of the other variations of colors for now before we make a choice to add a new color. The more colors we have, the more keycaps. Although we'd love to have plenty of different variants, having too many color choices is too much work for us to sort out. But if the demand is large we will try to squeeze in 1 or 2 colors.

If by any chance a 4th or 5th color will be added you are free to submit another form but we'd strongly ask that you PM us here or drop us an email at Sales@keypop.net

Order numbers have been updated and we are already almost reaching the 500 keycap price tier for the Blue Toro keycaps!

So how are you measuring demand for the alternate colors? Should people just post up which one they like? Or is there a form? If there is not a form, may I suggest a form to vote on a 4th (or 5th) color choice?

I vote for white legend on black keys.
Orange or yellow (or whatever that is) legends on black is a close second for me.
I would buy both.

If they reach 52 cents I would have to buy some. And with the international shipping fee, it only makes sense to buy 10+.....  ;)

I never participated in a group buy before, but this is too awesome to resist!
So If I wanted to get 4 blue, 5 gray, and 4 white keycaps, that would be 10.66.
Add that with the shipping(+4.5), that would be 15.16.
How do I pay this on paypal? Who do I send the money to? Thank you!
EDIT: Oh, didn't see the order form. So I pay after the deadline, right?
And if the price lowers, will I receive that benefit even though I ordered earlier?

This group buy is awesome and I would love to participate!

It says in the order form that the shipping address must match my Paypal address. I have recently moved from my Confirmed Paypal address and will be moving after April again. Will there be a problem if I listed my current address? Would I be able to alter my address with you if I after April (I read that you estimate that these will be shipped at the end of April)?

Also I would like to say that the orange/black key and white/black key would be awesome as an option as well.

Your shipping address must be finalized before payment is processed which would be 1 or 2 days after the deadline when we have finished sending out invoices. Please plan ahead.

Thanks for the quick reply and for your hard work on this Group Buy. Will it be ok if I used my girlfriend's address just to make sure that they get somewhere? I do not think that they are in my Paypal though.

May I have an estimation about how much it cost international shipping of 30 keycaps? Not sure if it's better doing two 15-kecaps shipments for $9.25 each or a bigger single one.

It is ALWAYS better to ship in one big shipment than separate. with about 30 keycaps you should only see a difference of an extra dollar or two in the shipping cost.

Blue Toro is about 50 keycaps away from the 500 price tier mark!

20 keycaps away from breaking the 500 price tier mark for the Blue Toro!
Bravo Gentlemen! Almost reaching the 500 price tier in under 24 hours is a feat in itself!

Once we get atleast 75 votes for one color on the polls, we'll include the color in the groupbuy.
Currently Dark Green on White seems to be the most popular by far.

$15. Unfortunately that is the cheapest option that the USPS offers.

Honestly the best option would be to include your phone number in your order. Rarely do our packages get lost(Unless your in China) so you don't have much to worry about.

-"Forest" Toro color variation added! PLEASE PM or email us your order change! You are allowed to re-submit the form but it will make our lives MUCH easier if you send us a PM or email us.

-Gray Toro has officially broken the 500 tier price point and is now $0.62! White Toro not too far off with only 9 keycaps short of breaking the 500 tier price. Blue Toro will definitely hit 750 price point by end of groupbuy if this keeps up!

Keep in mind people. There is no point in waiting for prices to drop before ordering. The prices will never go down unless people start ordering. You're more than welcome to cancel your order(BEFORE the deadline) if the final price is not to your liking. But waiting till the last minute will not help. There is no risk in placing an order as you are not putting in any actual money for now.

P.S. Please do plan on buying responsibly. We will not change orders after the deadline because you simply didn't calculate your funds properly or you came up short. If you place an order please consider it a commitment. Reserve the money so that this groupbuy can process much faster.

Expect around $1-3 increase depending on how many exactly. For now it is hard to estimate exactly the shipping costs but unless you are ordering 50+ keycaps there will not be a dramatic increase in price.

As promised,
So far our ESTIMATED costs for slightly large orders (~50 keycaps) is about $4-5 more. For around 30 keycaps please expect a $2-4 increase. This does not include the sorting fee.
For any orders that are enormous(around 100) please note that we will be using priority mail. A small flat rate box is around $25 while the medium flat rate box is around $45. Please keep in mind that these rates for priority is not giving us any form of profit. These are the actual rates for the Post Office.

We do offer cheaper solutions for shipping but that is entirely your risk. We have rarely had packages fail to be delivered(with the exception of China), so most likely your packages should not have any problems reaching you unless you have entered your shipping address incorrectly.

We've been a bit slow on updates lately because I've caught the flu but we'll try our best to keep you updated.

The estimated costs may differ slightly(a dollar or two) when it comes to the actual invoicing and when we calculate more accurately.

I guess that it's safe to estimate that shipping 60 keys should be $20 in total (including sorting fee). I have to talk with "my people" and update my first order to the new numbers.

Thanks!

We've hit some new ridiculously high numbers for all designs!

Please be aware that there are NO PRICE TIERS AFTER 1000 unless we hit 2500 which is very unlikely.

Please keep in mind. We'd like to strongly suggest against purchasing our keycaps for commercial purposes as all extras will be sold at our webshop(support us!). The primary reason we decided to release group buys to the public was to offer our keycaps at affordable prices for the community to enjoy.
We hope you guys understand!

I just want to demonstrate that we are 8 Spanish dudes buying circa 70 keycaps for non-commercial and totally private pleasure ;)

It is perfectly fine to buy some extras to sell later. We just wanted to avoid people who would buy large amounts (100+) for pure commercial purposes.
If you'd like to buy our keycaps for commercial reasons please contact us and we can work something out.
We aren't necessarily outright banning this but we'd strongly recommend against it because we did pay for the legend fees and already planned on selling extras in our webstore

hmm, i vote for purple & pink on white next . Do you think James ?

Those are some bold colors there~  Not sure how many grown men would like those colors ;]

I vote for white on black next!

We may host another groupbuy for different color runs if this groupbuy runs smoothly and the demand is high~

Looks like I'm not the only one...  After all, you'll need one for every key in the Function row, in each color.  Then a few extras to give away to friends, add to GH trades as freebies.

Adds up pretty fast.

We've received some emails pertaining why we didn't opt for the PBT Doubleshot vers.
SP does produce PBT DS but unfortunately we feel there is little to no difference in the feel vs its ABS DS counterpart.
The thickness remains the same and the only clear difference would be durability(although ABS is quite strong and longlasting).

Shines do occur more quicker on ABS but considering that most of these keycaps will not be placed in any areas of heavy use, we intentionally chose ABS DS because it was drastically cheaper (around 50% cheaper) and was not much different than the PBT vers.

Numbers have been updated.

We've received quite a bit of orders/requests over night so we've come to the decision that this groupbuy is NOT for commercial purposes.
I repeat, please do not purchase our keycaps for mass commercial purposes.
We've worked very hard on this design and groupbuy to provide the community with our keycaps for pretty much the manufacturer price.

Please do not take advantage of this. There is a specific reason why we paid for the legend fee ourselves.

If you still want to purchase these designs for commercial purposes, please contact us via email or Private Message and we can give you a proper price quote per keycap.

I repeat, it is perfectly fine to sell a few extras but we do not condone the mass commercial sale of these keycaps without proper permission.
It hurts us as a small business.

I was looking forward to these caps, too bad it won't happen now.

I do have to say though that this response probably didn't help if you wanted to argue your case with SP to try and get them to make it:

"If you haven't noticed yet, our intention was to copy totoro but we simply renamed it for obvious reasons." (http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/1aveub/%E0%B2%A0_%E0%B2%A0_052_for_a_keycap_keypopnet/c915yxl)

You might have been able to argue for artistic differences and that it merely resembles it, it is not the likeness of it, if you hadn't said that.  Unless, of course, SP is like Youtube and just yanks it and doesn't really review cases.

Still looking forward to your new designs and different caps from you guys.  I hope this doesn't put you off from future GBs.

It's not that SP doesn't want to make these keycaps -- they could potentially be sued for mass-producing copyrighted material for financial gain. SP would be stupid not to decline. It's very understandable, but whoever reported it still a ****head.

The main reason we named this design as "Toro" was because we wanted to create a design that was quite different than Totoro(no whisker, mouth, ears), yet maintain enough similarities so that people could recognize it. Unfortunately our design resembled Totoro too much.

My mistake. We fully support SP's decision and we do agree fullheartedly that we shot ourselves in the foot here but the act itself was just so offputting.
We already had invested a considerable amount of money into shipping supplies and are now left with quite a surplus.

It sucks that it became that way.  Many communities used to be very friendly and helpful. Oh well.

Ripster does like to tease GeekHack, but I wouldn't call it propoganda.  He does like to tease about the $250 Esc key and how it seems like the key cap sections get the most action.

It looks like the two group buys I was really looking forward to aren't going to happen now.  I was really looking forward to the CMYK caps, but the MOQ for eveything in that set is not even close to being met.

Probably the same thing with GMK, but why not have Imsto make them. I'm sure he has plenty of white blank Thick PBT R4 caps :)

I was looking forward to keypop's GB as much as everyone ... I still want a forest Toro :(

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes, but umm ... not sure when this happened ...

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.3.w4996320547.16.xMZt3M&id=17559990119&

I'm guessing this may be the dyesub option keypop mentioned.

They've been in Imsto's store for at least a week. TBH, I totally thought these were going to be Imsto caps from the get go.

Edit - Perhaps this is a super early April fools joke

Although we aren't in any position to argue it's extremely discouraging to see that imsto used our groupbuy and images(which I actually made myself) to produce the keycaps without our permission.

Truly irony at its best. Not sure if we'd like to do any more groupbuys if this will occur each time we start one.

At this point I don't even care. we truly didn't expect our first group buy to turn out like this haha.

I don't mind if imsto makes totoro keycaps but I do mind if hes using the image I worked hard on.
I honestly just want an explanation as to why he did this.
We contacted imsto(he was online when we pmed him) and he seems to have logged off now.
Hopefully I'll hear back from him soon.

It's fine we've learned our lesson. If imsto replies that's great. If he doesn't, well its not like I can do much about it.
Thanks to all for the great support throughout the group buy while it lasted though! Truly appreciate it!

I'd also like to apologize to all the mini groupbuy organizers that were working hard on gathering orders for this groupbuy.

All you have to do is get legal permission from the copyright owner. Very easy to do usually and of no cost (likely).

A little different when it is copyright Disney...

They have a track record of not letting anyone use anything, ever.

Because the US supplier considers the design a copyrighted image, and they won't reproduce it.

That is the point (for the most part) of copyrighting something: to protect something you consider valuable to you or others. It's a good thing if someone likes their logo to them, you just have to go through them to get it.

How do artists create paintings and prints to sell of various intellectual properties? I think if it is changed enough of a percentage than it is an artist rendition and is legal. I would think that the small custom design also being on a key cap would be enough of a change unlike other attempted keys that were an exact duplicate of logos or prior art.
