If the goal is to prevent another 9/11, than allocating disproportionate amount of resources to check Arabs and Muslims is the right thing to do (in the absence of more specific intelligence).
When it comes to issue of effectiveness there is no doubt that this works and works very well (look at Israel for an example).

Have you wonder why we are not getting punched elsewhere although we are all out protecting our airports? Maybe for the same reason no planes have crashed into buildings in billion years before.
Don't get me wrong, it's real… There are crazy people out there prepared to do nasty things to get their point across the table. But I don't think they are as many so called terrorists as we are told. In fact, I would be curious to know where terrorism casualties sit in the list of causes of death due to bad human behavior.
