Blank keyboard
« on: Wed, 23 April 2014, 01:36:50 »
Hi, I am total newbie. Saw beautiful blank keyboard and spent whole night looking for one to buy.
Is it cheaper to buy blank keyboard or normal and than get blank keycaps?

Cherry G80-3000 is fantastic :)
Thank you guys and greetings from the Czech Republic ;)

You have das keyboard that has blank keycaps on their keyboards:

http://www.daskeyboard.com/daskeyboard-4-ultimate/

It is certanly cheaper to buy blank keycaps and change it on an keyboard with cherry mx switches.

http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/keycap-set.html

Keyboards: Dell AT102W (matias standard clicky), Maltron two-hand 3D fully ergonomic keyboard (Vintage MX Black). CM QF XT (MX Grey) IBM model M

You don't need to spend much to have blank caps:

http://www.banggood.com/PBT-87-Blank-White-Key-Caps-For-Cherry-MX-Keyboard-p-84084.html

http://www.banggood.com/POM-84-Set-Blank-Key-Caps-Black-Keycaps-For-Cherry-MX-Keyboard-p-84082.html

Or just search for "blank keycaps" on eBay.

All you need is a board with Cherry MX or Cherry MX-compatible switches.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Blank keycaps can easily be found.

More important questions are: What type of switch do you want?  What layout (fullsize, TKL, 60%) do you want?  Backlighting?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If you want nice blank keys as stock and like the G80-3000... then the G80-3000LPCXY or LPCXX is the one for you!

this! It's the one for you! cherry blank POM keycaps are excellent: the best.

Sadly, it looks like keyboardco no longer stocks them.

They're supposed to be "coming soon" to Banggood. Can't attest to the quality of them though - knowing Keycool and the quality of their blank PBT set, it will also probably be pretty thin.

Cherry blank POM?

Nevermind, I thought you meant MX-stem compatible, not made by Cherry :p

An older version of the Das Keyboard was essentially a rebranded G80-3000 with blank black POM keycaps and blue switches. Might be found on the second-hand market.

That is true. The DAS II aka G80-3485LWNUS is actually a better choice since it is an NKRO model unlike the G80-3000LPCX* which are only 2KRO. They do pop up in used market now and then if you want to hunt or don't mind waiting for an indefinite period.

Your first "mold visible through caps" picture just shows the sprue marks.  This is a side-effect of the manufacturing process, and most keycaps have this - perfectly normal.

What rowdy said.

You know how model planes have all the plastic bits on one piece of plastic? That's how keycaps are made.

You can see a depression in the top of the cap from where it cools in the mould.

Thanks about the sprue marks, will change that in the pic's description. I noticed them also on my HHKB and Filco ABS caps, but those sprue marks were at the bottom, barely noticeable.

The depression in the top of the cap I find unacceptable, but perhaps I have too much OCD :P Anyway, you can barely see it from a distance, only up close.

I saw das keyboard 4 professional  but thats a little bit expensive, and i don't know its repairable, because they have no guarantee here in EU.

If you can give me more keyboard ideas, i would be grateful :D

Thanks,

Basically I'd say you could get any keyboard w/ MX Brown and then buy a blank keycaps set. You could get the PBT keycaps set made by Ducky. They sell for ~50€.
