[IC] Custom Lasering Service
« on: Tue, 02 July 2013, 11:46:09 »
Since I've already had a couple people PM me about lasering, I'd be interested to see who might be interested in a lasering service that should be cheaper than what you can currently find online.

We've got three lasers currently available in the shop, a 24x18", a 36x24" and a 48x36". Along with the ability to cut, the two smaller lasers are also quite capable of etching/engraving as well.

Currently, I can cut:
Most plastics (Acrylic, ABS, Delrin, etc etc) up to 1/2" thick
Wood up to 3/4" thick
Cardstock/Cardboard

I can etch:
Anodized Aluminum
Plastics
Wood
Glass
etc etc.

I'm still a bit in the air as to what pricing will work out to be, but to give an example, I've quoted for two different layered acrylic keyboard cases at $60-80.

If you're interested in having this become a more permanent service, please let me know here!

If only you were able to laser cut aluminium :'(

You do tidy work so I'm sure people would be interested. Still, it's a shame about no metal cutting :'(

Depending on how the next 6 months go, we may add a laser capable of doing metals ;) So All hope is not lost yet.

Definitely a possibility, depending on what color your looking for I'm pretty sure I could do a set of tops & bottoms for $30USD + shipping.

AcidFire with that hookup. That price sounds SO good. May I ask what country you're located in so we might have a better idea on shipping costs? I think you said Canada in your Piano thread right?

Thats right. We'd be shipping through our company account so it's actually cheaper than the standard rates. For a kit with the tops & bottoms I'd say 10-15 in canada, 15-20 in the US depending on how quickly you want it.

sweet HHKB layout

are you able to get matte acrylic surfaces (like matte white or black or grey) to cut btw? getting ahead of myself probably but it is a IC after all.

Are you capable of doing some 90° bends with a softer radius like a 35mm film can? I need a 25mm wide by 300mm (bend) 300mm (bend) 300mm with some various holes for esatap, audio and powerswitch for my custom PC case. Some kind of 2mm thick white color plastic would be ideal. I would also be interested in having some stylized text etched into the piece.

I'd love to get my PC case panels etched.

I've done it with a pen-knife before, but I'd imagine the effect with a proper tool could be impressive.

So how much did the 5 layer case/plate cost if you don't mind my asking? Also how much might a TKL case for a Phantom be?

$70. For a Phantom, I imagine you'd be looking at ~$100, but that's for Acidfire to answer.

im guessing you are busy with ErgoGP, but i am greatly seeking new tops/bottoms for my ergodoxes other than clear (matte or semi-matte surface preferred)....seeking it from anyone really if anyone knows of anybody or a cheap online place to get them. Don't need the center layers, just the top and bottom.

I've been looking at offering an ErgoDox case, or bottoms & tops (or both) but the issue that I have right now is that the thicknesses I have on hand don't match what the Ergodox uses. If someone with calipers can give me the metric thicknesses of each layer, I may be up for doing a group order of cases.

we'd love to have another laser source on the forum, especially one with such a large bed and the ability to cut up to 1/2". if you'd like official vendor or service provider status and hence start offering this as a regular service, please let me know.

I'm also very interested in making my own layout, but curious, where would I get templates for CAD programs for Cherry MX switches, and what formats should the laser cutting files be? What CAD program would one typically use?

Hopefully I'm not derailing the thread too much. Obviously I've never done laser cutting before.

The thickness I used here are:
top: 3 mm
spacer: 5 mm
plate: 5 mm
spacer: 5 mm
bottom: 3 mm

One source has told me that the Massdrop cases use the following:
top: 3 mm
spacer: 4 mm
plate: 5 mm
spacer: 4 mm
bottom: 3 mm

I've been looking at offering an ErgoDox case, or bottoms & tops (or both) but the issue that I have right now is that the thicknesses I have on hand don't match what the Ergodox uses. If the top and bottom are 3mm, I would be happy to cut a couple of test pieces for someone to check from the existing files. If someone is willing to test the fit, PM me and I'll only charge you shipping (first PM snags it). Once I get confirmation back we can look at offering different color tops & bottoms, and with enough interest I'll look into getting the proper thicknesses for doing full cases.

That is a PNG, it won't work as AcidFire would require a vector file.

If you want I can post the files for these true lube stations: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49901

Hey Acid,

Since you live a province away from me, would it be possible to cut the acrylic pieces for Orion/Lightsaver keyboards?
They're pretty small, and if you can, maybe I can tell metalliqaz to host his mini-gb using your laser :P?

Current Keyboards: Orion - 62g ergo clears;
A87 PS2AVR - 59g ergo clears; QFR - stock blues
