[IC] Cherry MX White switches
« on: Sun, 29 September 2013, 03:03:16 »
Cherry MX white switches seem to be one of the most difficult to obtain switches. However the retailer Conrad has them in stock and at a reasonable price. They are $0.49 each when you buy more than 500. Depending on the shipping cost to the US and how many people buy switches, we could get some white switches for pretty darn cheap. Post here if you are interested and let me know how many switches you would like. If we get over 500, I will make sure this happens. Thanks.

I'm thinking I priced those and after all shipping, fees, etc they weren't any cheaper than 7bit.

But maybe the price is lower now.

I'd buy ~120 or so if the price is right!

Well there is free shipping from Conrad. The only shipping charges would be from the proxy in the UK and from me to you. If 500 switches are ordered, then shipping will only add on a few cents per switch. For shipping from me to you, it should be under $5. So considering 7bit charges $0.88 a switch and $5.41 for shipping, I am sure we can get cheaper than that.

I'll have to go back and see what I had figured before.

But yes the price does seem better now!

Let's do the math now! Assuming 600 switches were ordered, the total would be $487 shipped to the UK. Let's say shipping from the UK to me in the US is $36. That means each switch would be $0.48+$0.06 shipping so $0.55 each. The only additional charge would be ~$5 for shipping. So if you were ordering 120 switches from 7bit, it would cost $93 shipped. If you ordered from this GB, it would be ~$71, saving $22 total and $0.18 a switch.

Interested if the price could go down even more (with a higher quantity of switches ordered) with all fees considered.  Would get a 60-75% set.

$0.49 a switch is very cheap for White switches. However I will see if any other distributes offer a discount at 1000 or more.

You said they would be more like $0.55 a switch from you + shipping to us, right?  I guess that won't go down too much if you order more--just get a bit closer to $0.49.  I glanced at $0.55 + $0.18 above first, which is what I incorrectly remembered, but the $0.18 was from domestic shipping for 120 switches, so nevermind!

The more you order the cheaper they area? Within reason because x can fit in a box.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

One thing to mention. It seems like whites sometimes don't click quite right or click at all.

I would order a few more than needed for your individual usage scenarios. I doubt TFR wants to check every switch.

That's the general consensus. All white switched are factory lubed.

I love whites but the inconsistent clicking drives me crazy. I think in my last batch somewhere between 10% and 20% of the switches didn't click like the others. YMMV, but definitely order more than you need.

The person ordering switches will have to decide if they want 20% extra switches. There is no way I can keep prices low if I am including 10% free switches or more with every order.

It's similar to green but has a quieter click. To me I found whites smoother and less fatiguing than greens.

All switches will be PCB mount. If you need plate mount, you can simply cut the plastic pins.

FYI, $487 doesn't look right as the intermediate cost (($487 + $36) / 600) = ~$.87.  If they're ~$.55, I'd be down for 150 switches.

Good point--I hadn't looked at the first link, and the price is in GBP, not USD.  Unless there's some special rate for this particular buy?

0.36 GBP (at the 500-switch rate) = 0.58 USD, as of now.  $0.58 * 600 = $348.   Add the cost of shipping to the U.S. ($36) to get = $384.  That's to get the switches to TFR.

From there, the switches become $0.64 each + shipping (say, $5.25 within CONUS in a small Priority Mail box).  Plus any currency conversion fees to do an international transfer to buy those 600 switches?  And any PayPal fees on our end, if money is sent for Goods.

If they're cheap I might be in for some.  I just wish I had experience as to what they feel like.  I recently loaded blues with clear springs in my Phantom and I can't say enough how much I like them.  So much fun.

By the way, I have some whites and they don't appear to be factory lubed.

I'm afraid it would depend heavily on financial details at the time  the GB happens ... but I'd love to have some. probably not enough for a full keyboard ... maybe a ten-key. Somewhere in the 20-50 range.

It also might be after new years before I can think about collecting keyboard parts for keyboards I'm not specifically planning on spending my life typing on. So ... I'm a definite maybe on this IC.

They don't put much lube on them, just a small amount. All the one's I've opened up have had lube.

The price for 500 + is £ 0.36/switch google puts that at $0.58 and to get free shipping to UK proxy you have to spend over £ 199 so if you get 600 units they are ~$0.58 shipped to the UK proxy so if it cost ~$40 to ship to USA ($348.90 for 600 switches to uk proxy + $40 to ship to USA = $388.90)
that will come out to ~$0.65/switch plus shipping and paypal fees

Also the switches linked in the OP are plate mount (MX1A-A1NN ) not PCB (MX1A-A1NW)

Still cheaper than 7bit.

And converting plate mount tot PCB is not hard.
