What would you all think about something like this? I call it the One Plate:

Show Image

One Plate to rule them all, One Plate to count them,
One Plate to accept them all, and on the keyboard mount them

A little Dremel work, and this plate replaces the stock plates for most 108, 104, and 87-key keyboards.

ME LIKEY

Hey jd, if you do add these holes for 60%, think you could also add holes to the numpad area to allow mounting of the 4x5 ghpad?

Where do we need holes in the numpad area? I need to look at a PCB I guess. :)

Edit: okay, I think that works. :)

What if it was made like this?

(Attachment Link)

Could the top right area just be bent back and forth until it breaks? Or am I underestimating the strength of the material??

You probably could do something like that, but it would be pretty hard to do it "right" without bending the holes where switches are. Much better to cut or file.

I am interested, bytheway! I need something to put my sprit 110% in. Even if not, I'll just direct wire and go.

I don't guess there would be any way to know for sure without trying it, especially since this is really just a concept right now. But if the case claims that it works with metal plates, I don't see why this particular plate wouldn't work. It's designed for greatest compatibility across platforms.

Damn Damn Damn!

I forgot about this thread somehow, and sent off my stuff to Margo for modding purposes. Now I won't be able to take scans and measurements for this project.

Hehheh, got it.

I'll ask Margo to do the work instead. Hopefully he'll get the PCBs a couple months from now.

They don't depict the metric **** ton of standoffs they will need to keep them at a fixed distance though.

Neat idea though. Do they have to manually cut off the bottom-most part of the switch?

The sample plate is the One Plate design. So tkl compatible but not 60%. If the design seems sturdy enough, I see no reason why the 60% compatible version wouldn't also work.

If we think it's necessary to do another sample for the final design we can.

how about testing it with other G80s as well eg G80-8113? If the plate winds up with all the modular easy-to-file-off parts, does that mean that we can actually file it apart and put metal plate sections under the different parts of a G80-8113 or G80-8200 PCB? (Hint, I have both).

I have a 8113 and I was thinking this exact thing. Although it might take parts from more than one plate to fill in a whole 8113 with that extra function row and all. Also, my 8113 has an ISO enter which won't work with this plate, but I was thinking that I could use one of my ISO gh60 plates for that portion of the keyboard and use the extra pieces from this plate to fill in the rest.

Funny you should ask. I just picked it up about 30 minutes ago on my way in to work. I have not had any time to really check it out yet, but at first glance it looks good. The finish looks great, but I am anxious to test fit some switches in it and test fit it on some boards. I can test it on a disassembled Rosewill 9000 and disassembled Ducky G2 pro. After that the plan is to send it to jd for further testing.

Any plan for an ISO version?

I think we should take a poll. As long as ISO version can come near to MOQ on geekhack, it should be safe to make it.

Lots of these group buys expose the GB organizer to heavy financial risk. To make things easier for JD, let me make this offer.

I promise to buy up to two ISO plates if it helps to meet MOQ or reach a cheaper price tier. I'm already planning to buy two ANSI plates.

I don't actually want the ISO plates. But I'll get someone who owes me money to pay JD anyway. (Can't make a gift from a Singapore paypal account).

After the group buy is done, usually people who missed the group buy start looking for the group buy organizer. JD can sell them the plates and return me my money then. By doing this, the GB organizer won't have to sweat it if the plates don't sell right away, while keeping some in stock is very helpful for latecomers.

I'm willing to pay for 6 plates (4 ANSI, 2 ISO) and just take 2 or fewer plates. I want to fund a small inventory to help out those who missed the group buy make their purchase at group buy price. It always irritates me to see people flipping stuff for profit just because they can get away with it. And it irritates me even more to hear them talk about the free market. Well, free market also allows market participants to keep inventory and sell at cost if they wish to, so there!

Those who know me, know that I've always been willing to give up my place in group buys if there isn't enough stuff to go around. If latecomers want all 6 plates, I'm 100% ok with getting zero. I'm not a charitable foundation, so after all plates get sold I still want my money back at cost, of course.

It is my intention that after I get back my money, I'll put that back into helping another group buy. Hopefully I can kick start a geekhack custom of keeping excess inventory from group buys so that those who missed the GB don't have to beg and overpay for stuff.

You can see that there is already an issue with a standoff hole being in the wrong place for a ducky G2 pro, but other than that I am very impressed with this shop's quality. I will try to test fit it with a Rosewill 9000 tomorrow. Gotta go to bed now.

That plate looks quite nice!  I like the brushed finish too.  Seems so thin for its length and size--going to need some good packaging for shipping :)

From the pictures the finish looks nice.

[EDIT] That sucks for people wanting to use it in G2 Pro.

If it does fit the Rosewill RK9000 it should fit a Majestouch2 since they're both made by Costar correct?

Whoa whoa whoa, don't scare people off! We can fix that before we do the order. That is the whole point of making a sample and testing it. ;-)

As for the rosewill question, I'm not sure. I think so, but I don't know for certain. Jd can probably tell us though.

I now have a CODE I can test the plate with. That was the purpose of the test plate, to try and fit it to as many real world keyboards as possible before we make a final design and move to production. Any fitment issues can be addressed now, during the design and testing phase.

I want to thank berserkfan very much for this extremely generous offer. :thumb:

Testing Tour
If you have a full size keyboard (OTHER than Ducky G2 Pro, Rosewill RK-9000, Filco Majestouch, WASD CODE, Cherry G80-3000), and you would be willing to test fit the prototype plate with your keyboard, please send a PM to me (jdcarpe) stating your interest, which keyboard you own, and your US mailing address. Requirements are that you can turn this around in a matter of a few days, that you can take pictures to show fit and/or any issues with case/PCB, and you are willing to pay shipping cost from you to the next person via USPS Priority Mail. Your keyboard doesn't HAVE to be desoldered for you to perform a test fit, but it might help.
