These are just going to be bottom row and caps lock, correct, none of the other keys that were discussed in the thread?

thanks again for putting this together, I'm still in for the quantities above even so.  I might order another black if the extra keys are available.

Yeah, sorry, the cost of all of this was more than I was hoping for.  Adding one key is somehow like $3-4 extra per set with the legend fee factored in.

If we could agree on a single color of keys for everyone, more would be possible.  But as we see with the numbers, it's like a 50/50 split.

no worries at all, just wanted to make sure that there weren't going to be options.  I'm happy either way.

Out of curiousity, does anyone know how much the original Moogle kit was going for?

cycloverid I believe the original Moogle kit was in the low-mid 20s?
Do not quote me on that though.
However, there were not nearly as many people in that GB compared to yours.

I await payment instructions!
My modded Cherry Caps Lock is bothering me.
Does $19 include shipping to Canada?

Oh, good point lootbag, now would be the time to get the shipping fees figured out......

I'll be posting those before the end date.

I wonder if SP made a mistake on something (the price seems pretty high)...  Melissa was originally going to charge me $45 X 9 keys for the legend fee.  Hint: there are only 6 unique legends for this kit!  And only half were $45 anyway!

EDIT: USPS to Canada says 11.35

Does the price include shipping in the US. I live in California specifically.

Post by: cycloverid on Mon, 22 August 2011, 23:10:05
It's looking like US shipping will be $5

International something like $11-13

This isn't the final say yet though, just a first estimate based on USPS's pricing.

These prices are not included. Sorry.

From looking at the round 3 gb price sheet  the whitemoogle kit was 8 and te blackmoogle kit was 12... Both game with 12 keys

Post by: cycloverid on Mon, 22 August 2011, 23:18:07
jpm804: Two of those keys were blanks of course.  I have asked Melissa to double check her numbers, because she has made mistakes in the past.   I suspect that the custom legends might be the cause of the inflated cost (outside of the legend fee), assuming no mistakes were made.

EDIT:

-Just looking at the Starcraft II keys, they were going for ~$3 each @50 quantity.

-The round 3 Modifier kit is listed @ $18

$19 seems pretty reasonable to me for 10 keys with 6 custom legends across two colors.  Let's not forget that these should look much better than the Round 3 moogle kits, which just used SP's default font.

A lot of the boards that come w/ doubleshots are space saver boards and use a short right shift.

Unfortunately, Delete/End/PgDn are also R4 profile so even if you are putting the keys on a tenkeyless it won't be quite right, but I didn't find that out until a couple weeks ago when I actually got around to putting doubleshots on something.  Numpad +, -, and zero are different as well to a standard 104-key board.  Additionally, the space bar will be slightly shorter than a normal 104-key, but the kit includes a new space bar anyway, and the bottom row will also be unusable (wrong size keys even if you feel froggy enough to modify them.)

The price seems reasonable to me.  I have 3 sets of cherry doubleshots on the way, just waiting for the moogle kits :)  What is going to be the turnaround time on these?

MissileMike:  Manufacturing lead time is 5 weeks.  I'm guessing everyone will get their keys some time in October.

Goly: I have you down for one white already -_-

Melissa double-checked the prices and there is no mistake I'm told.

EDIT: Also, BiNaRiS might not be able to handle distribution..

Unless I find a cheaper shipping solution, USPS offers a $5 flat rate to anywhere in the US.

Cheaper solutions might accommodate one set in an envelope or something, but I'm not sure if I'd trust that so much.

So, you can sqeeze several sets into one priority box, right? (I ordered 7 sets in total)
Title: [Group Buy] Moogle Kit 2: FINAL ORDERS - LAST DAY 8/25
Post by: cycloverid on Tue, 23 August 2011, 20:34:29
The box that comes with this flat rate is like 5.5X8 and can be up to 4 lbs.... I can't imagine any order would weigh more than that.

I might be able to do a less expensive shipping option based on looking at some of these other threads and getting ideas.  I need to make sure this will be okay, but the idea is to use those bubble wrap envelopes.  It would also be limited to like 2 sets or so and is reasonably less secure than the priority shipping method.

For anyone wanting this option, I might need a day or so to get some time to figure it out.  Please PM me if interested.

The main thing is, if like 5 more orders drop, I'll be forced to raise the price of the sets.  So if shipping is a factor, let's get that settled.

SHIPPING UPDATE:

I'm going to amend the priority shipping option to include packaging costs (bubble wrap and all that) and the fact that the prices are $5.20 (US) $11.35 (CA/MEX)  $13.25 (OTHER) -  a little over my original listings.

The new prices should be $6, $12, and $14 respectively.  Sorry about this...

With that said, I'll begin accepting payments tomorrow, but orders might stay open until monday.

Thanks for the heads up, please keep me updated everyone.

The only way this could end badly is if a bunch of people added themselves to the interest check and don't respond or pay.  It's a weird balance of trying to give everyone the best price I can and keeping a stable price!

I ASSume that $6 will cover shipping of any reasonable quantity of sets w/in the US?

Guys... please use the gift option.

ANY FEES YOU BARE YOURSELF!  Please understand that I can't be losing tons of money with fees on this.  The gift option should waive any fees, but if not, then please select the option to bare them yourself.  A dollar isn't much to you guys, but if I get $30 in fees from incorrectly paid items, it all adds up on me!

Atenacious:  If you used the gift option on the second payment, then you are one of two payers so far that is getting a fee applied.  I will allow this to go through as is, because the refund I issued still applied a fee....

Let me explain what happened:

1.  You paid $25.  A fee of $1.03 was applied, netting me $23.97.
2.  I issued a refund, seeing a fee of $0.73 as I clicked accept refund.  You lost $0.73 - I wasn't happy about this, but what can we do - I was clicking too fast.
3.  You paid a second total of $25.73.  A fee of $1.05 was applied.  I net $24.68, which is 32 cents less than the asking price.  Conclusion:  PayPal is a little richer than it was before :(

I have been reading that Paypal has an option to apply fees to the recipient or yourself.  Please select yourself from now on everyone!

Title: [Group Buy] Moogle Kit 2: FINAL ORDERS - LAST DAY 8/25
Post by: cycloverid on Sat, 27 August 2011, 18:30:16
By samples you could mean two things:

Color samples: Yep, I got them a few days after they sent them.  GAW was the best match for grey... it looks almost identical other than the texture (which is a little more grainy).

EDIT: Picture!

Prototype key:  This is a $65 key that will be sent out before the rest.  This is so I can see exactly how their machine works and also compare my thickness values to the Cherry ones.  This will be the right shift key (it has all 3 line weights that I've submitted to them) and I'll be more than happy to take pictures when I get it.  This isn't an out-of-pocket expense of course, I factored it into the overall cost of all of this.

Part of my diabolical raising-of-the-shipping costs has allowed us to fall under 100.  These types of things are better unknown though.

I'm also willing to pay a little more for my sets... not thrilled about that.  Not for us to worry about yet though!

100 isn't the magic number of sets, the prices are tapered all the way down.  Well, almost.

I paid my $25 for my black. They better be perfect for costing 1/3 of a 99hk official cherry 104 set. That's 3.5x as much per key. I still can't wait... forever is taking ****ing forever... And GB4 is in the next universe after this one implodes... But at least I'll get this before then... hopefully...I guess...

Yeah, I was thinking this the other day.  Factoring in that 99hk's sets are brand new and only missing spacebar and caps lock, $80 isn't as crazy as it seems at first.

Hum, I kind of disagree.  Raising the price may have scared off some people and made some of them lowered the number of sets they order.  That becomes a self-fulling prophecy.  I would like to see a total count of how many paid and unpaid sets as of now and see how far we are from 100 sets.  And if we are within reach to 100 sets, we should wait a bit so we can the discount at 100+.

Title: [Group Buy] Moogle Kit 2: FINAL ORDERS - LAST DAY 8/25
Post by: cycloverid on Sun, 28 August 2011, 19:40:09
Litster:  Well, I've given a lot of thought to how I can do this if you can believe it.  Originally I thought we'd get almost as much additional orders as we'd lose them.  This turned out to not be true.

Do I start this new thread and give an exact price breakdown for each quantity?  Will this give unrealistic expectations as to what price to expect?  EX: If we have 112 orders, people would expect that price range, but if we lose 20 orders after everyone pays, then what?  We just wait for more orders to come?

If I list a price without a price breakdown, will people think I'm inflating the price just to make a profit?  Ultimately, despite this downside, I felt I could list the price at $19 ($19.25 was the price point at 100 orders), and lower the price later if we got a lot more interest.  I felt that lowering the price later would be fine, but raising the price was almost a non-option, so starting at $19 felt safe.

When we were above 100 orders, I felt I could lose a little bit on shipping, because I was making a tiny bit on the orders.  When orders fell off more than I expected them to, I had to raise the shipping costs slightly in order to make sure that I wouldn't lose money, since per order I was actually losing money now.  But raising the price of the orders would scare people the most I felt.

This has caused a lot more anxiety than I ever would have thought.  It sounds like you're worried about being ripped off here, when I can assure you the chances of me losing money are greater than gaining a few bucks.

Conclusion: I'm not here to make a profit.

IWuzHere:  I wouldn't worry about it.  So far the payment process has been going pretty smoothly.  Absolute worst case scenario, I refund everyone's money and we all go about our lives.  But we all want our awesome Moogle Kit too badly for that to happen!

Post by: litster on Sun, 28 August 2011, 19:54:45
No, don't get me wrong, I do not worry about getting rip off.  You do all the work.  If there is a little bit profit to be had, that is cool.  If anything we should pay for your time and effort.  Anyhow I don't think it wouldn't be enough to make up for the time you have to spend on this anyway.  So I do appreciate you organizing this group buy.  And thank you for that.

Take a look at Noodles' Starcraft keycap group buy here (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?21144-Starcraft-2-Doubleshots-Round-2), and aggiejy's RGB keycap group buy here (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?20058-FINAL-Doubleshot-RGB-Set-from-SP-%28Orders-Payments-Deadline%29) (originally started by Noodles (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?19570-Doubleshot-RGB-Set-from-SP-%28Orders-Only%29)).  Noodles lists out all the pricing for each level.  I think transparency is the best way to do it.  So people have clear expectation on what price to pay at whatever total size of the order.  And you wouldn't have to explain any price increase (which already happened) or decrease.

You are running the group buy, so you make the call.  I just want to get to a lower price if we can.  I already paid.  So I am going to shut up.

Thanks.
Title: [Group Buy] Moogle Kit 2: FINAL ORDERS - LAST DAY 8/25
Post by: cycloverid on Sun, 28 August 2011, 19:58:37
Transparency works great if I can change the price at any time.

The problem comes when people have paid, and then we're all sitting around because 20 people lost interest, stopped tracking the thread, or simply backed out.  In this case, transparency can cause the same kinds of problems.  Ultimately, you just have to trust the person running the thread I guess... and I'm new here too.  Things aren't easy!

In my opinion, the worst problem was if I was asking people to pay more after they already paid.  Now that's a total mess.

If I ran a group buy with this many people again, I'd do it exactly the same.  I'd set a price where I expected the quantities to fall.  If orders go up after you list the price, you lower the price before everyone pays.  If interest completely falls off, then you're screwed either way.

My inclination is to agree with litster.  Transparency seems to me to be best in any circumstance.  If the buy fails, it fails because the GH market couldn't support it.

That said, I've never run a group buy and I don't doubt your good intentions and reasons for doing it the way you are.  I'm definitely not suspicious that you are trying to swindle us, and I'm totally fine with you making a small "profit" (or perhaps getting a set or two for free), given how much time and effort you have put into this.

Yeah, I had similar things in my groupbuy. In the end it worked out, but I didn't get as many paid orders as people in interest check. I just ended up picking up the cost myself to reach the minimum order. I figured I could sell them later on either here or on ebay or what have you. I'd also recommend pm to all that have not paid, as some people might not visit the board so often, may not have seen the order date, need a reminder.

Yep, that's what it is looking like lysol.  I'm sure if you guys thought about it a little more you'd see the dilemma.

Transparent cost breakdowns are a horrible model to use if your goal is to break even in my opinion.  Unless everyone understands that you are going to set the price high to begin with.

Hashbaz: the dilemma isn't just: does it fail or does it not fail?  Failing is the worst case scenario.  The dilemma is: will you sell as many as you set the price at?  How can you maximize the chances that your buyers will go over your intended price point should be the goal.  Going negative after a ton of work doesn't feel good.  Selfless, yes.

As Ascaii already said, there's no gift option for paypal in Germany. Judging from the examples you gave the fee should be about 4.1%, so I added that and a little extra for your effort. Wouldn't want you to lose too much on this.

Well, I don't see any reason why the same method couldn't be applied to a SP spacebar to make it fit a Leopold as I did to the Cherry one to make it work on my Filco... *IF* they are the exact same length.  How long is your Leopold space bar?  I also have a couple space bars that aren't standard 104-cherry length, but they're all off Cherry boards.  (various space saver and/or winkeyless models.)

Melissa said lead time is 5 weeks.  The prototype should be sent out at the start of the second week of EDIT:October (derp) I'd think.  The color samples took like 2 days to get to my house!  So the shipping will be really snappy.

I'm hoping the prototyping phase will only add an additional week onto the whole process.   It gives me peace of mind knowing that I can trap any mistakes that might happen, though - so obviously non-negotiable.  :)

Hey everyone,

Melissa is asking how many posts are in the spacebar.  I'm hoping that this is very standardized.

I assume that pretty much every keyboard these days uses 3 posts on the space bar?

Sorry, the only mechanical keyboard I own is a Filco - and I am certainly no expert.

The 'standard' bars from SP in round 3 had 4 stems, to suit both Filco and Cherry spacings (just picture the one ripster posted without the 2nd and 5th stems).

It's a good thing I asked... I was looking through the wiki and saw a few 3-socket space keys and assumed that was the usual.

I own a Leo so I'd love to have access to those spacebars. But I wouldn't want them replaced, I'd want them added. Since they are aren't doubleshots they couldn't be too expensive I'd presume. I would pay the difference to add 1 white and 1 black to my order.

On a side note, what is the height on these kits compared to real Cherry Corp keys. I assume these will be slightly higher than the Chery Corp keys?

ripster: Melissa tells me they don't have the tooling for that.  So I guess we'll have to go with the 4 socketed spacebar.

It's a good thing I asked... I was looking through the wiki and saw a few 3-socket space keys and assumed that was the usual.

That is usual, but the switch itself is in a different position on a Cherry board than it is on a Filco/Das/WASD, and putting both posts for the switch don't cause any interference problems (I'm using a Cherry spacebar on my Filco right now with the center post for the Filco switch epoxied in and the original Cherry center post left in place with no problems.)  So for an aftermarket kit using four posts is definitely the way to go, unless you make them like the picture Ripster posted.

Maybe some pics will explain better - this thread (as well as being my keyboard) is exactly the reason these moogle kits were created, have a look at the space bar

http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?20990-My-own-anti-otaku-Filco-(w-modem-burning-pics)

in the one good pic of the space bar in that post, you see the original Cherry offset post in black, and the centered Filco one epoxied in in white.  On a Cherry board, the switch is offset to the right of the keyboard when you look down on it.

Adding a second spacebar shouldn't increase the price that much. Additionally you would make a lot of Leopold/Steelseries/Das/Zowie folks happy.
Could you ask a quote for that?

If you can't justify adding $1,5 USD extra to help out some fellow geekhackers, then I will take your spacebar. The more is better, since ABS gets shiny quickly.

Here's the e-mail response from Melissa about the spacebars:

As we would have to pull the tooling to change the configuration on the spacebar, we need to charge for the unit price at the quantity you are looking to order:
10 space bars - $6.13 / each
20 space bars - $3.68 / each

Shipping costs will stay the same.

Obviously this would be an added expense for those who wanted them.  Seems kinda expensive?

Kinda.  But since we only have two colors for this GB, one of each would do it.  I'm in for at least (1) black & (1) white as I have (2) Leos.

I think the best bet is to create a new leo spacebar group buy.  It would probably be a fairly popular group buy as a lot of leo users want replacement spacebars.  But not all these leo owners are also getting a moogle kit here.  Most, if not all, of us have already paid for our moogle kit orders.  And if you have leo, chances are that it is a black version.  So the existing black leo spacebar that is already on your leo keyboard would work fine with your black Cherry double shots and the black moogle kit.

Full size Cherry G80 or G81 with doubleshots.  The -1800 boards still don't have everything you need to put doubleshots on a standard 104 key MX board or even a standard tenkeyless (right shift is wrong, numpad is wrong, Del/End/PgDn are wrong profile)

Ok, just wanted to help out.

Just one small question. I have a cherry doubleshot set without the left shift, right shift and the bottom-most row..
but I see that this moggle kit does not include the left shift. Any way to get the left shift? Any leftovers you might have?
Also, what color code are you using for the light beige and dark beige?

Absolutely. I ordered the one in Group Buy 4 but I have no idea how it will look.

Keyboardlover, we could just treat it as a custom key since SP doesn't have the font. Same way this kit is being handled

I would, but you're a little late - I've already got the Esc key that SP sells on their web site, and the RGBs from the leftovers offered from the RGB GB :/

Otherwise, yes, I would have been very interested :P

I wonder if there would be any interest in reproducing the "cherry" key as well, but that might get into copyright issues.

Yeah, it's too bad there is a glut of RGBs right now due to aggiejy's buy.  These would presumably match the Cherry font though.  Maybe just the red escape?

These would be custom legends made to match the Cherry font.  cycloverid's SVG files look pretty good -- we'll should know soon how closely the test run he ordered matches real Cherries.

And for me at least, it is the font.  I have the SP red escape on my Cherry 2-shot board now and it irks me that it doesn't match.

A red escape key would be very cool.

Keep in mind that I didn't actually make a font.  All I made was a set of paths for each key we were using.   It would be extremely easy to make the esc key, though (3 simple letters).  If I don't get around to doing it, someone else with light to moderate knowledge of Adobe Illustrator could pretty easily do it.

-The up arrow looks a little bit thicker - or possibly the proportions.

-The letter spacing is tighter on the original (this was intentional due to the machining).

-The dot above the i is smaller on the original (I thought this might happen - not a huge deal though).

-The left margin looks a little smaller on the SP key.

-The bars on the f and t are a tiny bit too small - easy tweak.

I mean overall I don't know if I'd even want to risk making any significant changes,  but maybe address a couple minor concerns if even necessary.

More eyes are better than one or two, so let's hear the opinions - the image has been added to the OP for ease.

I saw that, but didn't jump on it because it looks like the layout of that board is the same as the Cherry space saver that I have, so I couldn't use the rshift, del/end/pgdn, or some of the numpad keys even with a moogle kit :(

I've thought about using white alphanumerics w/ black modifiers though...  you think that would look good?

cycloverid, I will see if HoboBob wants one, that still leaves me two sets, so I don't mind at all passing one on.  I'm guessing that if this were to work out, the easiest way to handle it would be that he would pay me for the one set, I'd let you know that he'd done so, and then he'd pay you for shipping it to him?

(re: space saver keycaps on a std 104 board) - see here

http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?20990-My-own-anti-otaku-Filco-%28w-modem-burning-pics%29

lookit the first pic; note that Del/End/PgDn are located outside the normal boundaries for keys - in the space between the number row and the f-keys.  They're the right SIZE, but if you put them on a std. 104-key board, they're R4 profile on a space saver, and you'll be putting them on R3, so they will appear higher than the keys around them (backslash/pipe and the R3 of the numpad) - not *real* noticeable, but it ain't perfect.

HongE:  Way ahead of you.  Before I submitted the final guidelines, I gave Melissa a list of 3 changes:

1.  I submitted a slightly tweaked path of the up-arrow.  It's slight, but will be closer to the original.

2.  I asked for a width increase of the t and f bars from the 0.014" cutter to the 0.015" cutter.

3.  I asked for a width increase on the up-arrow from 0.025" to 0.026" or 0.027".  This width is also shared between the windows and menu logos.

Numbers 1 and 2 will be included in the final manufacturing.  Unfortunately, the third request wasn't able to be done.  They are missing cutters between 0.025" and 0.030", so the width will remain the same (0.030" would be way too much).

I was going to include this stuff in a post-mortem post, but this will atleast clear things up for those perfectionists.  Just know that I tried my best to achieve perfection!

Well, I'm glad you went ahead with the changes. I realized that it would only be a minor tweak to the vectors and they could just go ahead with production once they receive your updated file. Unfortunately, these changes are direct responses to only the Shift key. Hopefully the other keys won't have any glaring issues.

Well, the only problems that could happen now are with the SVG files I submitted.  The width of the cutter is the same between all the keys.

I'm pretty confident there won't be any glaring issues.  I do know that all of the text will be perfect, given that the shift text is exactly the way I intended it to look.

If I had the resources to do 2 or 3 more prototypes, I might do it.  But, keep your expectations realistic.  The texture and contours of the keys are already uncontrollably different.

Yeah, I sent an e-mail to Melissa earlier today asking if she knew how far along things were.  She gave me the tracking number and it said today was the day.

Unfortunately, and oddly, it didn't come today.  Sorry for the false alarm.  I hope this means tomorrow for sure.

USPS says:

Better updates to follow I hope!

We got em guys!  No glaring flaws at all.

Forgive me if this is a pretty brief post, getting over the flu (wash your keys I guess - sorry!)  Took a really really quick photo:

Left 2 keys: Original Cherry grey ( you can see the letter thickness issues here) -- EDIT: Whoops alt key is next to capslock.

Middle : Moogle 2 Grey

Right:  Moogle 2 Black

As I thought, I was matching the thicknesses to the black keys more than the grey... so the letter thicknesses are closer to the blacks.  It doesn't bother me very much at all.  I might have gone a little thick on the lettering overall though.

Conclusion:  Couldn't be happier for a first time attempt here.

They look great! I'd also be into a matching RGB set, as long as it includes ISO options (namely: short left shift). I also wouldn't mind a yellow 1.5 "cherry star" key to use as a neutral system key. See what I mean here: http://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=525&hilit=rgby

I'm sure we can get them faster with a smaller group buy like this. Also I guess a lot of people, especially on DT, might be interested in the ISO option, because it hasn't been available for the RGB orders I've seen in the past months.

Good idea.  The standard SP Esc keys are nice, but having everything match would be nicer.

I spent about an hour or so separating each set into little ziplock bags.  Looks like we have 2 bonus sets, minus 1 key each... kinda disheartening.

So extra sets are as follows:

2X WHITE (complete)
1X BLACK  (complete)
1X WHITE (minus caps lock)
1X BLACK (minus menu key)

NOTE:  I didn't get lots of extra sets!  But, we have the files - all you need is to get another group ready! (unless changes are made)

Here is a picture of the keys on my Filco:

UJELLY?????

The biggest problem is that the spacebar is very noticeably whiter than the other white keys.  I'm not sure if they have a better color choice to be honest, I only asked for a couple samples and chose the best of them.

Those of you who got the white kit will definitely notice the added boldness of the text... sorry about this.  Unfortunately the legends are actually very different thicknesses between the white and black Cherry keys.  So we had to compromise, and the black keys will be almost perfect.  :/

EDIT: Oh, and the menu key is just a tad bit wonky.

I'll get everything sent out in a week or two!

Yea, it may be a bit early still on the back of Aggiejy's buy to do another GH-centered RGB set but the Red Esc is probably a welcomed doubleshot buy; nobody is really doing a simple version of an escape key at the moment.

The idea is to duplicate this as closely as possible, especially the font:

Well then I support everything about this buy. Its rare to get simplistic doubleshots that bring class to a keyboard...

And yes, I understand the irony involved in that statement; Keys like 'Awesome Face' and 'Jolly Roger' sort of contradict that belief.

God, that key looks so good. I hope we're able to get it right like the Moogle 2 did. We've gotta get a good match for color and font, which means it helps for the person organizing it to get a hold of one.

If you mail one of them to SP I am pretty sure that they could duplicate it pretty easily; that was the first plan they had when trying to get the Universal Spacebar project off of the ground.

We'll have to choose the color and make the SVG file ourselves.  cycloverid did a fantastic job with the SVGs for this moogle buy.  He said at one point that he'd be willing to do an Esc legend too if someone else runs the buy.

Well, I think I could do the buy in some capacity if nobody else steps up; I am already doing two right now but they both are fairly basic. Nothing too strenuous is involved in escape keys and modifiers.

Yeah, this will be really easy guys.

The only problem I've been mulling over is:  Do I try to correct any issues with the Moogle 2 for next time?

--First, I went about 10-15% too big on the actual text sizes.   I didn't have any super accurate measuring device, so I went with the digital overlays.

--Next, I probably favored the black key boldness too much.

--If I reduced the size of the text, the boldness would also be reduced slightly (proportions).

Now, do we accept the current slightly off version?  Or do I correct this for the next batch?   If corrected, they won't match the existing Moogle 2 kit...

Oh, no, please by all means take the Escape key over if you have intentions of doing it. My offer was to throw it onto my buy if nobody wanted to take it on but having you do it would be easier.

Wait, this would effect the cost in what way exactly?

I'm not talking about making another Moogle kit, I'm just talking about swapping the SVG files out with something more accurate - just to be clear.

If you want the Esc text to be exactly like the Cherry version, some adjustments will have to be made to my current version is what I'm trying to say.

I cannot speak on the Moogle Kit because I did not participate in the buy but with the Esc key I think people want it to be as close to the original Cherry ones as possible.

If you scale down the text, isn't the thickness/boldness still the same since it's a different setting? I remember how you had to change your first SVG, which were outlines, to single paths instead

hashbaz:  I was talking about the Moogle legends for the RGB or CMYK versions.  If they are adjusted, this wouldn't effect the cost.

As for the Esc legend, I don't have the SVG file yet.  I have a bunch of templates that I can use for size comparisons however.  Pretty simple minus time getting the sizing perfect.

Atenacious: the boldness is assigned after the SVG files are submitted based on a certain cutter size.  We would need to change the cutter size after I scaled the text down by a small amount to keep the same proportions.  The text is just lines(curves), it has no thickness until I tell Sig. Plastics the size cutter to use.

Maybe this will make more sense:  I measured the boldness of the text digitally based on an overlay that I used to position and set up the curves for the text.  It is simply proportions, not an exact real world measurement.

Yeah, that's what my understanding of it is. I'm not sure if we have this already but we should have a archive of SVGs in our wiki to use for group buys. There might be some intellectual property issues but it'd be great for mix and matching designs

I don't think that any geekhackers would mind if their .SVG's were used for more group buys; it is not as if they are sold to the people doing individual buys.

hashbaz:  I was talking about the Moogle legends for the RGB or CMYK versions.  If they are adjusted, this wouldn't effect the cost.

I'm still confused.  Doesn't changing the SVG mean a new mold and a new fee from SP?

They just charge a one time legend fee per file for custom legends.  It ranges from $25-45 based on the complexity of the design/specifications.

So you can change the files at will for free, even for a different order?  If so I'd say we should tweak them to be more Cherry-like.

Well, I think I could do the buy in some capacity if nobody else steps up; I am already doing two right now but they both are fairly basic. Nothing too strenuous is involved in escape keys and modifiers.

Wait a minute!

The job of a follow-up has been already offered to me!

Litster:

Sorry for the confusion.  I ordered the boxes Wednesday of last week.  The problem was, it said it would take 7 or so days to arrive.  This is why I was calling around to see if I could get them in-store.  After a day or two of that I realized ordering them online was the only way - and I should have just done that first.

Cycloverid, can you give us an update?  Any update at all?  You received tracking number from Melissa on October 13th.  You said it was delivered on the same day.  You said you have all keys sorted in ziplock bags on Oct 15th.  And mailing boxes arrived over a week ago, yet, we still don't know whether you have them packed and shipped or not.  If you are busy, that is cool.  Just a heads up to us would be fine.  But we have not heard from you days on end.  What's up dude?

I just checked the receipts for the shipments.

All the US orders have a delivery estimate of 11/12 (Saturday).  I hope that's the latest the US orders will receive them, and hopefully closer geekhackers will get them sooner.

Note: I sent almost all of them this morning.  A couple were sent the day before, but the line was just too long then.  I made the mistake of not paying for the postage online and could have saved a lot of hassle doing it that way.

I still want to see what a black kit looks like next to the Cherry blacks - take pics someone.  Hashbaz is sending me a couple black keys so I can check those out.

For everyone getting the white kits, I suggest using the Moogle right shift, as the boldness and size differences will be less conspicuous.  If only it had been perfect ...

I have a feeling the black kit is going to be extra sweet.

I just took some pictures of the black kit on my white Leopold.  My camera cable is at home.  Overall, I'm very impressed.  But I can see what you mean about how they look a little bolder than the other keys.

I hope others will post pics of the white set with white Cherry caps, as I sold my only set a while ago in anticipation of Ascaii's group buy.

Heh, just realized that my Leopold's cable is a mini-USB to USB like my camera uses.  Sorry the images are a bit blurry -- the light in my office is not great and I had to snap these in a hurry.  I'll put them on my Rosewill tonight and take some better pics.

I can still see the proportion issues despite the blurriness.  In this case I'd say it's mostly just the scale being like ~10% off on the text.

Only closer inspection will tell.

Wait, what?  People want to match these against the existing moogle kit, rather than the real Cherry versions?

A full faux cherry set would look better then a half & half, and I'm guessing some people don't want to or don't have Cherry sets to use for the other 4 keys

I'd like a set with full bottom row minus space, both shifts, tab, enter, backspace, and maybe Esc. If all those match, then the edit and numpad keys can be original cherry and still match well.

So, an all faux cherry kit could work, but I think the keys I mentioned make the best cherry supplement kit for matching cherry keys on modern boards. Both shifts would match, and all the alpha cluster caps with words would be consistent. The "Oqsy kit" would be expensive, tho. More setup fees for several keys. It would take a decent sized buy to be worth it. From then on they'd have the templates tho. Food for thought.

yeah i wouldn't mind a full set. seeing as some cherry sets come with RGB  so you don't get left shift either, like my set.

We'll have the Escape and left Shift setup fees covered after my buy, at least.  Tab, Enter, and Backspace seem like overkill to me though.  Especially Backspace.  It's not next to any other faux keys.  Same for Esc (unless it's a red Esc of course).

I think they turned out very nice. The text is a little too bold, but it still looks so much better than the SP psuedo comic sans font. The differerence in key profile bugs me a lot more than the legend difference. If someone was going to go for more matching keys, the European textless style would probably be best. I have the textless backspace and tab keys on my board. Adding textless / symbol only shifts, enter and capslock would definitely interest me.

Thanks for doing these cycloverid.

They are for modern boards with cherry mx like filco, das, leopold, etc. the 3000 should work with most of the original cherry corp ds caps, except bottom row on boards without winkeys etc.

Finally got around to take a couple pictures of the moogle kits.  Just took picture of the white/beige set.

Moogle kit with Cherry Dye Sub keycaps on Filco Gen1 with MX Blue.

A comparison shot of 3 right shift keycap.  From the top: Cherry dye sub, SP Moogle kit from November 2011, Cherry double shot.

I would have included the white/beige right shift key from group buy 3 moogle kit, but I don't have a set :-(.

Edit: macro closeup shots of the 3 keys.  Sorry that I didn't scale them to the same size.

The Ed:  I'm sorry there was a misunderstanding.  I'm not sure where you jumped on board to the group buy, but on the first of my two threads I thought I was very clear all of these keys were intended for modern key layouts (Hence the 1.25 keys as well).   If they were all the Cherry Capslock replicas, all of us with Filcos, etc would have to mod the stems :/

Litster: Those pictures are so helpful -  thanks!  I think I finally see the optical illusion effect between the beige and black keys.  In my defense, doubleshot widths are incredibly variable (Cherry being slightly moreso than SP from what I've observed).

He is right, the results are as close as one can achieve when outsourcing the production. Your SVG's were good enough to make SP create a 98% identical keycap to an old, vintage style.

"modern key layouts" means the width and shapes of keys, not specifically the stem layout. I have read every single post in both threads, and I don't remember ever reading that this was center stemmed. It may have been in there somewhere and I just don't remember. I think this should set a precedent that post layout should be specified in the opening post. And another thing, the 2 windows and menu key that fit my board are angled for the wrong row (or at least wrong). They are taller in height and the bottom of the keys is even taller above the rest than the front is. I'm talkin' 3-4mm at least! They are so high that I can see the switches underneath with my eyes at table level... Keycaps are supposed to "cap" keys right? Is a real cherry keyboard's keys really that different from today's keys? And yes, I have pressed them on as far as they go. When the cap bottoms out it can't go on any farther.

@The_Ed:

A Moogle Kit is designed to replace the keys on a vintage set that do not fit on the newer/different keyboards. One of the most notable problems is the off-center stems on the Caps Lock which, in order for a moogle kit to be worthwhile, has to be center-stemmed. I would make the guess that 75% or more of the orders in this group-buy would not have existed if the kit was 100% the same as an old Cherry keycap set. It was more about the legends and color than anything else.

As far as I can see the texture on that Cherry dye sub PBT is as smooth as baby's bottom. Is it really that good? It seems it is kinda slippery.
I wonder how does it feel compared to the more texturated Topre.
The SP key texture and key profile is very similar to Topre. I think SP PBTs should feel very close to Topre keys.

Could anyone confirm this?

That original cherry keys have a different key profile, it is especially noticeable on the bottom row. You should stick with the original windows and menu keys, or replace the whole bottom row including the spacebar. Also the capslock won't fit.

Probably.  the kit from 99HK came from Cherry 104 key keyboards.  Everything works except the capslock.  I tihnk pretty much every old-timer knows what a moogle kit is.  It could be confusing to noobs, especially if your cherry double shot set is different from most other Cherry double shots.

99-hk's caps lock fits, all 104 do. I wanted an UNSTEPPED caps lock. And since the 2 windows keys and menu key aren't doubleshot I wanted those too. And no, I do not type at table level. I can see more of the switches at normal height, but to still see the switches from table level says somethin'.

It sits about 2 mm higher than the rest of the row.  I verified this on 2 leopolds and a ducky 1087...

The doner board was a G81-1822HQ....  Perhaps it has different profile cherry keys than other cherry boards?  Because someone else would have definitely noticed this.

So I should try to grind down the shafts on the 2 windows, and menu keys? But that still wouldn't fix the angle problem, only the height. And the caps lock would have to have it's shaft completely removed, and a new one glued/epoxied in... which aint gonna happen, i'm too lazy.

The angle problem is inherent to all SP keys.  I think the only way around it is to use the moogle kit for your entire bottom row.  As for modding your Caps Lock, TheProfosist can probably do it for you for a reasonable fee.

I do sympathize with your situation, but I feel like you totally misunderstood the purpose of this kit.  You could definitely recoup your costs by selling it, as there are a bunch of new 2-shot owners from this buy (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?23218-ORDER-THREAD-20-Used-Cherry-Doubleshots-Round-2).  I know Oqsy in particular is looking for a moogle kit.  You might try posting in that thread directly.

I got the keys, in Germany. I actually needed only centered Caps Lock and Spacebar so I am happy. CapsLock seems to have exactly the same profile as the corresponding Cherry row. Unfortunately, the modifier row has rather different profile, so I cannot combine the Win keys with my Cherry modifiers (that was my initial intention).

Sorry for double posting but I can't seem to be able to edit.
Anyway, I noticed this slight difference in alignement between the Moogle right shift and the original Cherry shiftes. Namely, the arrow is not vertically centered on ISO cherry keys.

Moogle kit 2 right shift between Cherry ISO left shift and compact right shift.

It doesn't bother me much, also because I'm going to swap them with the new RGBY kit. However, I suggest that future Moogle kits should have a dedicated, if optional, ISO left shift.

Hum, I have a question.  7bit has a Moogle kits in his group buy 4.  The keys are listed on the wiki as follow:

1x Caps Lock (full-touch, 1.75 units)
1x Shift (1.75 units)
1x Shift (2 units)

2x Alt (1.25 units)
2x Control (1.25 units)
1x Alt Gr (1.25 units)
2x --windows flag-- (1.25 units)
1x --menu-- (1.25 units)
1x 6.25 units universal space bar (for Filco/Cherry/Leopold)

Are the shifts at the correct width for ANSI layout?  I think I am confused. Thanks.
Title: [Group Buy] Moogle Kit 2: FINAL ORDERS - LAST DAY 8/25
Post by: hashbaz on Thu, 19 January 2012, 19:53:28
Nope.  ANSI shifts are 2.25x and 2.75x.  ISO left shift is 1.25x.

WASD Keyboards' blank keycap page (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/individual-blank-keycaps.html) is a great place to sanity check key widths.

That's more than $100 in new legend fees, as well as a lot of work on the SVGs and uncertainty wrt how they'll turn out.  Unless there is overwhelming demand for this and cycloverid or someone else is willing and able to do the SVGs, we're going to stick with Ctrl/Alt/Win/Space/Shift/Caps.

I didn't realize it would be that big of a hassle to include the other modifiers although I would still like to see if its still possible / in demand. But say we get 50 orders (which doesn't seem unreasonable with the current demand for moogle kits) wouldn't $100-200 in legends not be a big deal?

I'm just curious, because regardless I'll still be down for the standard moogle kit.

I LOVE the thick windows and menu keys, except for the height/angle problem clearly documented here. The thickness is a perfect match to the thickness of a real cherry shift arrow.

I'm still not sure whether we need new legends for Menu and Win.  They are very noticeably thicker than real Cherry Menu and Win keys, but they don't look bad.  I'll try to post a picture of the RGBY Ctrl/Alt/Shift keys (which have the latest, thinner legends) next to the Menu and Win keys from the second round moogle kit and we can make a judgment from that.

At 50 kits ordered the extra legends would add more than $2 per kit.  Not hugely significant I suppose.  Bear in mind though that we are splitting the order across three color schemes, so the prices for white and Dolch kits will almost certainly be more than the black kit. Adding $2 could feel more significant in that case.

Regardless, making the extra  SVGs is work that I am not prepared to do myself.  So we'd be creating (more) dependence on something outside my direct control, which I don't like.

I think I have some numpad keys I am not using now that I can send you.  The trick though is these keys age, and each set may have a slighting different shade.  So, one trick I have was to use Round 1 or Round3 group buy sets' modifiers as Dolch moogle kits :-).  I think those colors were close enough.

As for Windows and Menu, they are way different then the rest of the keys and fonts.  Since they are just graphics, you can't really tell they are thicker or thinner than other keys.  At least I can't.  I don't think we need to redo the Windows key or the Menu key.  Unless, you want to use the new Windows 8 logo for the Windows key!  Hahahaha!  There I go again!

I'm interested in this Group Buy and I don't actually think what tsangan said about extra keys is overkill. Have in mind there a some people that have ISO Cherry sets that need to complete the ANSI set the regular moogle kit plus other modifiers.

You need to buy another ANSI Cherry set just to have 4 keys you're missing in case you have ISO set.

I'm planning on making 1.25x ISO shifts available.  From what I hear ISO enter keys are prohibitively expensive.  What else is different on an ISO set ... slash?

I didn't want to bother with an interest check, but maybe it makes sense to hash out exactly how many people want which options.

I think I didn't explain myself good enough :sorry:

A pic from teaper:

Keys from regular moogle kit are marked with a red cross and the keys marked with a blue cross are the ones that people who have ISO Cherry Doubleshots sets lack apart from the standard moogle kit. If an user owns a set of Cherry doubleshots in ISO layout he needs the regular moogle kit plus 3 keys that are from ANSI layout. If they want them they must buy another ANSI set just for 3 keys which in my opinion is not worth it.

So what I think is that if there is enough interest we could make what tsangan said so people with ISO sets won't need to buy ANSI sets + moogle kit to complete their owned sets. Obviously all depends on what people demand but we could make happy many people with that option.

Ok, I see.  The biggest problem I see is that I'm pretty sure that Ragnorok recently discovered that ISO enter keys are very, very expensive.  Can someone who's been following that thread confirm?  I'm planning on including both shifts, and an option for an ISO 1.25x left shift.  Backslash might add a lot of cost if we don't get a ton of ISO orders (which my RGBY buy didn't).  ISO shifts will be cheap regardless since they are 1.25x like the modifiers.

I'm going to put up an interest check thread to see what everyone wants.  I'll publish it on deskthority too and try to drum up support.  Might help if DTers who post more there than I do helped spread the word.

I think the point of bringing up a moogle kit+ for ISO owners wasn't to provide ISO layout keys but to allow people to scavenge keycaps from ISO layout boards. You'd be missing the ansi enter \ and lshift if you wanted to transplant an ISO set onto a modern ansi board. I'm interested in this since most of the DS keys you find on ebay come from ISO or compact layout pos boards these days.

Yup I agree. Might as well get everything needed for iso doubleshots to be used in ansi boards. I have no idea how much more expensive this will make everything though.

Yah me neither. I think the issue is new legend fees/getting someone to do them.  Its up to Hashbaz. I'm sure this GB will be very popular though as tons of people have been searching for moogles for a while.

Ok, I see.  The biggest problem I see is that I'm pretty sure that Ragnorok recently discovered that ISO enter keys are very, very expensive.  Can someone who's been following that thread confirm

Only below 15-25 orders. Above that it's a bit expensive, but okay. It's acceptable, ISO guys are used to paying more anyway. Now try to get 25 ISO folks...

Any ETA on the IC for the new moogle? Curious if it will turn out to be the standard or some extra keys.

I would say it should be all three kits (white, black, and dolch) with an add-on for each being the ISOkit. Six overall kits, three moogle styles, and the best imitation Cherry and Dolch keys in the world.

Seems to be a common question when I post; not sure why though.

Welcome to my world.

You go broke because there hasn't been a Group Buy that you didn't put the first post in for.

That would have been better if the numbers and Function keys legends were BIGGER and centered. The alphas look great!  What about prefrontal la sprue marks?  I think I see some, even in the relatively low res photo. Are there modifier keys from that run?  It's the mods I want in olive. Plus TAB and ~
