Title: [IC] g80-1800 & g80-186x compatibility set for SP keycaps
Post by: inlikeflynn on Mon, 28 January 2013, 23:42:20
Time to-do an interest check for a g80-1800 compatibility set to be used with SP keycap sets.

Typically with the combination of base kit + 10key kit + tsangan kit you would have enough caps to fit everywhere on an 1800 board, but it had the wrong profile and/or legend for 5-6 of them.
If you were trying to fit an 1863/1865 board, you needed to order 2 tsangan kits to get the 7 1x keys and find a 6x spacebar from elsewhere to use

To make a set fit all keys on an 1800 with the correct profile, you need 5 or 6 additional keys. This will be called the 1800 kit
-SP ROW 4 1x 0 key (this key is usually included with the 10key kits, but for WYSE sets it doesn't exist anywhere)
-SP ROW 3 1x +
-SP ROW 2 1x -
-SP ROW 1 1x Delete
-SP ROW 1 1x End
-SP ROW 1 1x Page Down

To make a set fit all keys on an 1863/1865 with correct profile you need 8 additional keys. This will be called the 186x kit
-SP ROW 4 1x Ctrl (qty 2)
-SP ROW 4 1x Alt (qty 2)
-SP ROW 4 1x windows (qty 2)
-SP ROW 4 1x meta (qty 1)
-SP ROW 4 6x spacebar

Here is a picture showing the keys necessary for an 1800 in red and the additional keys necessary for an 186x in purple:
(http://i.imgur.com/i3lFlCo.jpg) (http://i.imgur.com/i3lFlCo.jpg)

anything else like the 1.75x right shift or ISO things are covered already in the tsangan kits or ISO kits and not here.

I don't expect there to be a lot of interest for these, so even hitting the usual 25 minimum tier will be expensive. So no pricing as of yet
I expect there will be even less interest in the 186x kit, which is why I have things split out in 2 at least for the interest check.

No fancy form here, just respond in the thread below which kit(s) you are interested in and which SP keycap sets you are interested in (WYSE, CCnG, RA, Ragnrock)

Can Signature Plastics make a 6x spacebar instead of 6.2x?
I'm in for one of each for WYSE since some of the keys could be good for an MX mini or other non-standard layouts. I want to have the 1800 kit built into the toxic numpad kit, but maybe the 1865 wouldn't be out of the question to add in, or just as a separate group buy in toxic colors. I do use a 1865 or close enough layout keyboard at work. It has the touchpad under the numpad though so can't remember how that changes it since I'm not at that computer right now.

yes they can make the 6x spacebar. it is listed in the DCS datasheet

you have an 11900 then at work which has the touchpad under the numpad and that is an even weirder list of requirements.  :(  Adding the 186x kit would allow you to populate the clrl/alt/win/meta/space row. The 11800/11900 would also still have the problem of their 2x small right shift which is unique to them. And also it has tons of other keys still in the wrong profile still as the <ESC> key, the keys on the function key rows (there are two of them) and numeric keypad keys all have the size and profile of the keys of the home row (SP ROW3). I copied that last bit of text from the DT wiki

I dont have any of the sets but always liked the ragnarock one.

That said I'd love to see this as a standing offering and if I had the cash now I'd probably sign up for a rag kit and get on the lookout for the rest of the set!

Edit: Thinking about it I think my wkl 1800 has an offcentre stemmed capslock.  Does that need added to the kits?
Would love to see Flynn kits made standard for buys. O0

1, 186x, Ragnarok.
I guess I wouldn't mind using something else besides Cherry keys on my 1865.

Definitely interested in the WYSE key-set only because I never received my fully paid up order of CCnG's.  Lost close to $310USD and I paid an extra $40 shipping as well, on that order.  So yes I am now very wary about forking out any money for any key-sets unless I know the person running the Group Buy.

Put me down for 3 WYSE sets on the G80-1865.

You should already have an offcenter stem Caps Lock as that would have come with the Tsangan kit that is a must for use on any 18xx

List has been updated with the small amount of interest.

I just sent off an email to SP to ask about pricing for the 2 kits. For now its just using WYSE as the example so that she can provide me a price for each kit

Sorry about that.  I won't be buying anymore keyboards from here again.  Not that it's a problem it's just that I now have other priorities and the 'keyboard' is no longer the Number One fixation in my life.

Besides you can build a keyboard from scratch, hence the old-style of buying ready-built keyboards is too lazy, now you have to go the torturous route of assembly making the keyboard far more valuable to own.  Plus I never sell anything, hence all my keyboards will stay forever in closets and boxes for many years to come.

Perhaps my Gran-kiddies will discover them and see why the Old-man had kept these old-style keyboards for so many years.

First post updated with prices from SP. As expect they are quite expensive as we are at such low numbers. I'm just going to try and make the WYSE set's happen for now as they are the only ones with a chance.

It would be nicest to buy up to the 25 tier and have people get >1 set. But we still need more than 3 people on each set and willing to even try that  :(

Here, here I agree.  He is the official G80-1800 King around here hence when he says something about this model we all sit and listen with enthusiasm.

Would love to buy and own several "Flynn Kits".  I would by four at the very least, no matter what they look like.

thanks for the kind words and name ideas SmallFry & Elrick, but i'll leave the names as is. A descriptive name is better anyways. Aren't you sick of having to explain what a moogle or tsangan kit is to every new person :|

this will stay an IC now for the next month or 2 as I have 2 much more interesting 1800 projects in the work. One of which will hopefully also increase interest in the 1800 kit or 186x kit.

hey bro

sorry as i just noticed the thread- crazy busy.

i ordered what i thought was an g80-1838 as indicated in the picture, however when i got it was not even close. some rubber dome with a trackball- imagine my horror   the company i ordered from though gave me some great customer service, sent me a rma and are refunding me my money in full.

so saying all that if i had received the g80 i thought i was getting, if i had a g80 i would be adding my name to your order in some form. i have been watching the european ebay's and other than germany with an iso i don't really see any. i have a mx11800 with browns as you already know, but it has that weird 2.0 vs 1.75 short right sift.

Dear Flynn,

Yes you need to explain to noobs what a Moogle and Tsangan Kit is, but once they have been Geekhack Educated that will stick with them forever.  I know you are the type of guy that want's not to take credit for a new- type of key-set addition, but this time it's absolutely required to stand up and take the crown.

You are initiating this Group Buy and therefore deserve any or all naming rights to it.  If you were someone that didn't contribute anything on here at Geekhack then yes you shouldn't take any credit but the truth is you have worked hard in your own valuable time to see this GB happen.  Hence naming rights have to be allocated to you as a sign of appreciation and consideration for all the effort you have put into it.

It's alright for us "Bludgers" to sit back and do nothing, maybe because we're use to that type of behaviour because it costs us nothing, but those that stand up and actually do something deserve our greatest respect.

Hence this has to be known as a Flynn-Kit.  Enough said.  8)

I've already mortgage my first-born for CCnG/GnCC and the Sindarin set, may as well go all in.   :'(

I would take both sets in Ragnorock if they at least made it to the second or third tiers. And if the Windows symbol used was the same as it is on the 1.25x keys.

at this rate nothing is even to the 2nd tier, especially the Ragnorock set seeing as I don't own it anymore

I'm thinking about doing a smaller set with just "0" "+" "-" keys to make things fit better on any 1800. will just have to live with delete/end/pgdn profiles and incorrect 1x mods on an 186x as its just too expensive to fix all of that :(
