Does anyone know if this is a fabric or a teflon/plastic type of feel?

Hmm, looks like it's fabric on top and non-slip rubber on bottom. In for 2.

I'm just trying to figure out how a given mousepad would be bad for specific genres of games... If the optics track on it, and it's not too frictiony, what else is there?

The review was saying there's more vertical friction than horizontal friction. In RTS, you get more of a bird's eye view, so you'd most likely move in all directions vs. FPS where the mouse is more for diagonal/horizonal movements. Technically, I can get the pad and turn up the y-axis sensitivity in my G500...

Of course right after I by it I look at the "compatibility list" and see that there's an 'x' next to my g-5 laser mouse for the mousepad I bought... Could that just be that they didn't test it, or that it just does work, somehow, with that mousepad?

You're probably OK for the G500, as it uses same laser as the XAI.  According to their compatibility list, only the "KAI.g2" is not compatible with that laser.

I find it very amusing that mousepads have compatibility lists nowadays. I have really been out of the hardware loop for too long. I am suffering from old man syndrome on anything but keyboards it seems.

Yeah, it's hard to believe that a laser wouldn't work on just about anything. Except clear surfaces, my g-5 doesn't work on my keyboard cover or glass.

But this one does I think:   http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Revolution-Cordless-Laser-Mouse/dp/B000HCT12O

Not necessary to alter your mouse configuration, just turn the mouse pad 180 degrees for certain games.

Arrived today. Crazy fast shipping, they sent it out a few hours after I ordered. And yes, it DOES work with my G5 laser mouse, lol.

The mouse pad looks like it's made of plastic, but it's fabric. And the vertical friction is noticeable when you rub your fingers on it, but when using a mouse it's not as easily felt.

edit: better picture

I LOVE it. perfect size, and definitely will NOT move, the rubber is crazy grippy.
Might upload better pictures if my girlfriend brings her camera that's much better than my phone camera.

I had a softer one before (a small normal mouse pad from the 90s) and I wanted to try something harder. I like it a lot and probably wouldn't want a softer one.

My only negative comment about it so far is the sharp edges. My arms rests on it and kind of scratches it.

And apparently it gets dirty pretty quickly. I have some people over and there's what looks like some dirty smudges on it that are virtually impossible to remove

I'll probably just do that.

I tried using tape, it worked for the top layer of dirt. This pad is really textured and traps a lot of dust.

Could you measure how thick that pad really is. It looks a little thicker than my Steelseries Qck, which I love because it's so thin.

Do you guys think that this will be better than the Steelseries SX?

Mine is getting a "bit" worn, starting to see raw aluminium now :O (half a year old, talk about crappy anodizing)
But when will the g2 G Hard get in stock, anyone know?

I think its the only one that can be close to the one i have now.

Can I ask the silly question of why, exactly, people are going back to mouse pads? A decent mouse nowadays tracks on everything, including glass -- at least my logitech does.

The physics of these things coupled with a laser make no sense, relative to just using your desk/work area.

I guess I'm just too old and curmudgeny...and then there's the fact that I recently switched over to a trackball. So much better. But I'm not a gamer.

I'm not trying to troll, I'm honestly curious. Are there actual, tangible benefits to using one while gaming?

I think only the logitech performance mx tracks on glass. My G5 doesn't track on anything clear and it's laser.

The reason I bought this pad was so I could have a large surface where my mouse would travel smoothly when I played games. I kept running off the edge with my previous mouse pad. And since this was 20 shipped for something supposedly "high quality", I figured I'd give it a try. And I'm glad I did, it's nice to track on.

Well, to start with, much like mechanical versus rubber dome, not all surfaces give the same feeling as you move a mouse across them. Worse, not all surfaces give a * consistent* glide or texture.

Also, in a similar vein, the diode and sensor in optical/laser mice may very well track on more surfaces, but some surfaces track better, and most importantly, *consistently*. Just because a mouse ~can~ track on a given surface doesn't mean it will track as well on it as another ^.^

It's moderately annoying when you're just doing some light word processing when your mouse skips a little or drags a little. It can be an actual problem for other things.

Thank you taswyn. As I said, I'm not a gamer, and I've never had the issues you've described with mice jumping that way.

Personally, I'm not much a mouse user in general though, so it's not too surprising I haven't see that happen. I don't game, I don't do graphics work, and most of my time is spent in text editors of one sort or another.

I do definitely find it interesting that old is new again, as it were. We had a few boxes of several thousand hard topped Intel mouse pads sitting in our office until about 3 weeks ago. Couldn't figure out why on earth anyone would want them, and finally just recycled them.

I guess though, why not just use something like contact paper, and have it permanently affixed to your desk? I've even seen teflon topped contact paper, which I imagine would make a VERY nice mousing surface. And best of all, it's flush with the desk, for all intents, and so no sharp edges, you can have your keyboard overlap it with no troubles, etc.

That's always been my issue with mouse pads: they just get in the way most of the time.

A good mouse pad will remove your desk's imperfections from the equation (bumps, etc). For this reason razor-thin pads that are flush with the desk have never made sense to me.

Beyond the tracking advantages they can provide gamers and those doing photo editing which are by and large the biggest reason to have one, the sensors can damage certain table surfaces over time. The desk I'm using now was originally my brothers and before he started using a mouse pad, the laser of his mouse actually started causing the material the desk tray is made of to bubble and warp.

Obviously you can use something simple like paper to circumvent this, but for those looking for a solution that also may require the other advantages that come with a mouse pad, it just makes sense to get one. :)

The damage in question:

Doesn't look bad in a photo, but just by passing your finger along it you can feel how bumped/warped the surface has become - and that's something your mouse sensor isn't going to like one bit.

At any rate, appreciate the thread in regards to these mouse pads! Ordered a G3 hard and soft.. looking forward to trying them out and see how they fare vs. my Func 1030, as I've been wanting to switch back to something more cloth based.

Except I use a trackball, and before that an old sun ball mouse, and I see that exact same sort of damage on the desk in my office. Plus, the same sort of thing happened to my 12" powerbook. It even looked identical -- same pattern and everything.

It has more to do with your body chemistry than your mouse. Especially given where the damage is. Some of us are what, in the Mac community, are called "pitters" -- the aluminum on palm rests of Mac portables is pitted by our body chemisty.

I'm not saying the advantages of a mouse pad don't exist for people, just that one of your reasons doesn't seem to be one of the advantages.

Did he really use his mouse that close to the edge of the desk?

IMO its more expensive to buy it from another person because you need to pay for the extra shipping.

Unless... he/she is willing to ignore the EMS shipping that he/she paid...

The total $ shipped to US is $25 for 1 and $40 for 2 including shipping. As long as the sales price - cost of shipping is >$15, the person comes out ahead. As long as the sales price (incl. shipping) is <$25, I also come out ahead, win-win?

Does anyone have the g2 u?
I stupidly ordered without checking the compatibility list and I'm using a logitech G9 so I'm a bit worried that my mouse isn't going to track properly on the surface.

I ordered a hard red mat. It should go well with my ducky wrist rest. Thanks for the tip!
