CATCHING KAPPA STORY (from Edo period):
あるところ に、とっても びんぼう お とこ が いました。
Once upon a time, there was a very poor man.
あるとき、おかねもち の いえ に いって いいました。
One day, he went up to a rich man’s house and said,
「カッパ が つれる よい ばしょ を みつけました。
“Sir, I’ve found a great spot for catching kappa!
でも、エサ に にく が いります。
But I need some meat for a bait.
カッパ が つれたら おれい を さしあげます から、にく を もらえませんか？」
So, I am asking you for a lump of meat. I will return a favor if I catch kappa.”
おかねもち は カッパ なら たかく うれる と おもい、にく の かたまり を びんぼう な おとこ に わたして いいました。
The rich man thought kappa is going to be worth a fortune, he gave poor man a lump of meat and said,
「わし も、カッパ を つる ところ が みたいなあ」
“I’d love to see you catching kappa.”
すると、びんぼうな おとこ が いいました。
Then the poor man said,
「き の うしろ に かくれていて くださいよ。
“Sure. But you have to promise me to hide behind the tree,
そして けっして、しゃべって は いけません。
and not to speak at all.
カッパ は にんげん の こえ を きく と、にげて しまいますから」
If kappa hears a man’s voice, it will run away.”
かわ に つくと、びんぼう な おとこ は おかねもち に きづかれない ように、にく を ふく の なか に かくして つりいと には にく の かわり に いし を くくりつけて、ドボン と かわ に なげこみました。
As soon as they arrived at a river the poor man hid his meat quickly in his pocket, made sure rich man won’t find out about any of it. The poor man tied a rock instead of a meat to his fishing line and threw it; the rock had splashed into the water.
かねもち は き の うしろ から こえ を ださないように みていました が、いちじかん も すると まちきれなくなり、びんぼう な おとこ に こえ を かけて しまいました。
The rich man was watching poor man from behind the tree trying not to speak anything, but couldn’t hold himself any longer than an hour. He finally said to a poor man,
「・・・まだ、つれないのか？」
“Hey, anything yet?”
すると、びんぼう な おとこ が いいました。
Then the poor man said,
「ああっ、いま カッパ が エサ に くいついた のに。ひと の こえ が した から にく を とって にげて しまった。もう だめだ」
“Oh, Shucks! I was just about to catch kappa but it heard you and ran away…oh no, your meat is gone. This is not going to work anymore.”
そう いう と、さっさ と つりざお を かたづけて、ふく の なか に にく を いれたまま いえ に かえって しまいました。
Then he quickly picked up his fishing rod and went back to his home with rich man’s meat in his pocket.
