R4's are upper last function row(from ESC to Pause), the rest(WASD cluster) has different heights.

The ~ through - (on the numpad) are all row 4 as well.

And is there anyone with a decent amount of experience with these metals? I'd like to find out how long these will last. Is there any chance that they will wear through the plating?
Check out my sales thread.

Phantom w/ErgoClears
KBC w/Reds and Cherry doubleshots in imsto\'s case
G80-1800HAU w/ErgoClears
Realforce 86U Variable
KMAC Titanium/Winkeyless (in the mail)

electroplating only coats maybe several hundred atoms thick (but it really depends on the process and how long the plating is). if ABS keys get shiny from the abrasion of typing, there's a really good chance it will also wear down the electroplating film. maybe OP might want to check to with the guy making it and ask him how long he plates these keys for.

I still can't decide on which colour, then I had to decide printed or not, or should I go both non-printed/printed

and now there's 1.25x modifiers i need to get too, oh man ~_~

That was my problem too. I was going for silver but changed my mind after looking at the pics. Then I wasn't sure if I wanted printed or non-printed.

I'll put them on my new Typenow w/ MX Blue in the classifieds. I'm gonna win it for $307 : )

electroplate is generally nickel or chromium

That's only true because electroplating is usually done for corrosion purposes, which nickel/chromium handle better than other metals (steel, etc.) Also, "cast iron" is really steel with a lot of carbon to make it euctectic. That's why it's brittle. It's often electroplated.

Since these are (apparantly) Zinc as a base, they can be electroplated for aesthetic purposes, and they can use many metals. For example, I have personally electroplated copper (which "might" have been from a US penny) onto Zinc (which "might" have been on a US dime). It didn't work out very well (due to the activity coefficients of the metals involved) but it did work. Also, Gold and platinum are often electroplated onto semi-metals for usage in SEM. (sputtering and/or evaporation are used for other, non conductive samples). IT could be anything, really.

You can electroplate a LOT more than 100 atoms with higher current, and more time (you're right though: it really depends on the process) and it's usually pretty this to save time and money (because it's usually done to keep the more active metal from corroding). Since this is aesthetic, it really could be anything.

That's one reason I was leery about this: I didn't want to wear through it, but depending on the composition of those outer metals, it really could be pretty resistant to finger wear.  I don't know for sure, but I'd expect it to be better than ABS. They do use metal keyboards for long-life. It'll still wear from you putting your fingers on it, but I'd expect it to be less.

At any rate, I'd not let worries of that impact my decision. Metal keycaps man!

yes, i said electroplating was several hundred atoms thick, but there will be a lot of variance because there is no detail to the electroplating process, how long it gets electroplated for, or the material used. it could be more than a couple thousand atoms thick, or it could be less than several hundred.

anodized aluminum would be more desirable, but it will cost more. don't get me wrong, the concept of metal keycaps is pure awesome, but if the plating is thin enough, the wearing on these will look even worst than ABS wear. at least with ABS, it just gets shiny, but with electroplated coat wearing out, the keys will be a totally different color in the middle.

How long do any of us really keep the same keyboards or the same keys on our keyboards anyway. By the time it wears out, it'll be time for a change of scenery anyway. :P

I remember that discussion: as far as I'm concerned, the result of that was: you can't absorb enough through your fingers to make a difference.

Also, these are electroplated in another metal (silver? gold?) so you're not even touching zinc.

Right, actually you're not directly touching zinc because of the electroplated cover.

Are the WASD cluster ones engraved, or also available in blank? Asking because the "w" on those caps seems a bit too small compared to the rest...

Yes they are engraved. Blank WASD and Arrows sets will also be available.

I don't suppose anyone would be willing to sell the 'S' 'B' '1'  or '4' or just some blanks from those rows on their set? I suppose I could just get a WASD, but that leaves something to be desired for numbers, and the B is important, we'll see.

a good question though, I don't see any in the reference pic, do the home row keys have any bump/etc?
