grey 39 spacebar switch groupbuy! (being merged with phantom)
« on: Tue, 24 January 2012, 15:22:53 »
Just so everybody knows - this groupbuy is being merged with the phantom one.

I think I'll PM everybody in this to register themselves just in case they back out. Just so everybody knows this is the new price tier:

Quote from: 7bit
According to blainchen, the current MXGREY is MX1A-D1NN and it is available at the same prices as the other colors. I still need info if MX1A-21NN is also available.

If we stay at 400, the price will be higher, around 0.95 EUR.

I need 600 orders to get 0.6 EUR per switch (or around $0.8).

At 800 switches the price will be around 0.5 EUR and at 900 0.45 EUR.

I will keep the switch buy open for a bit longer to allow orders. The 4 weeks delivery time are for production of the MX brown switches which are currently sold out. Production will start in around 14 days and you could imagine there are more important cutomers who get their switchs before us, so we have to wait for them.

So, if you order browns expect them to be still warm from production!

7bit.

Condensed:

.95 * 400 = 380eur
.6 * 600 = 360eur
.5 * 800 = 400eur
.45 * 900 = 405eur

So if 200 more switches are ordered they will be .6eur a piece.

Quote from: 7bit
Just write a message to Phantom @ Geekhack with the content:
MXGREY 400
your e-mail address

and you have ordered 400 MX grey switches.

It can't be easier!

Edit: I have PM'ed everyone and ordered my 110.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a while now I've wanted to make a keyboard completely out of grey 39 spacebar switches. Nobody really sells them though.

The grey 39 is the most tactile switch in the mx series. It is used in the spacebars of brown and clear boards. It is epicly awesome in my clear board's spacebar. But since I can still bottom out clears it seems logical for me to use grey 39s instead. That way I wouldn't have to try to not bottom out the keys. If you bottom out clears you need to get in on this groupbuy. You may never get another chance for this switch.

Even if you don't feel like splurging for a whole keyboard's worth you could order 37 or 87 or even just 1. Every little bit helps. And if anybody knows anyone who would be interested in this groupbuy they should send them a PM.

Order List
----------------------------------------
Name ------------ Quantity --- Due
The_Ed ---------- 110 -------- $---.--
hashbaz --------- 10-20
Zehkul ----------- 110
jinzo.pk3 --------- 110
GoodKnight ------- 37
BossBorot -------- 10

Total 387-397

The grey 39 "MX1A-D1.." is the TACTILE one.

How many do you want hashbaz? A "handful" for me is quite a few switches... I can't make MOQ if people don't order any.

Alright now were talkin'! We're up to 21% now! If anybody knows anyone who would be interested in this groupbuy they should send them a PM. We just need 12 more people to make a full keyboard and we're good to go!

As a side note - How do I change the thread title to report the current percentage reached? I can't figure it out!

Another side note - If the current rate of orders keeps up we should hit the MOQ in 6 days!

It is very easy on PCB mounted keyboards. But a bit tricky for plate mounted. Patience is key.

You have to hit the "Go Advanced" button while editing the OP.  Then the title becomes editable.

This is only possible with the innovative Phantom keyboard, except you desolder the switches.

Are you looking for PCB of plate mountable switches?

I've thrown out greys from the Phantom switch group buy, because of the low quantity, but I could add them again.

Even if you put the grey 39s back into the "Phantom switch group buy" wouldn't the MOQ still be the same at 1600? And as I said before it is tricky to swap switches in a plate mounted board. Most people would probably just desolder them. But you can still remove them without desoldering them if you have the right tools. You stick those long forceps or tweezers underneath the plate to unlock the 4 clips and pull from the top. Hint - You release both on one side first. If you're only swapping 37 then this would be faster than desoldering them all. If you're doing 2/3 or more it might be faster to desolder them.

As a side note - Removing them with the forceps/tweezer method "can" break off the occasional clip from the top piece. But you will have replacement tops from the grey 39 switches for every single switch if you happen to break every single one. If you are patient though, you will never break a single clip.

I've removed the grey because there where less than 100 ordered.

The MOQ is 1000 and the price would be around 0.6 EUR if there are around 400-600 orders and price will be around 0.45 EUR when there are more than 1000 ordered.

"ergoNOTmic", that's a good one! But seriously, I'm guessing you've never even typed on clears before. This is a groupbuy for those who like clears, but bottom them out constantly. By having a heavier switch a keyboard will be more ergonomic. Thus ergoNOTmic for you, ergonomic for me. A grey 39 takes only 15cN more force than a clear, so why does everyone seem to think that they take super-human strength? And yes I'm sure some of you will point out that I own a 3494 instead of a black. I like my linear's light, and my tactile's heavy OK. I use the 3494 for gaming, the clear for typing, and the razer blackwidow ultimate is used by my dad now so it doesn't just collect dust (but it is collecting food now). I'm not THAT weird, just look at all of you who are also members of a KEYBOARD forum. We're all pretty sad creatures really...

So if you think browns are dirty, and clears are getting somewhere, then this grey 39 groupbuy is for you!

What is your cheaper source 7bit? blainchen told me it was:

MOQ 1600
grey 39 "MX1A-D1NN" - 0.55EUR per - 880EUR total
MOQ 20,000
grey 39 "MX1A-D1NN" - 0.25EUR per - 5000EUR total

Are you sure you're not confusing this with the grey 37? The 39 is the tactile, the 37 is the linear.

But wait! There are 2 different greys?

Nevertheless, prices where all the same no matter if blue, black, green, brown, red or clear. So why should greys be different?

edit:

Chances are good these could ordered along with the Phantom switches.

I will add the grey switch again. From around 900 switches prices will be around $0.6 or 0.45 EUR.

Isn't the "Phantom switch group buy" on Deskthority? Are you adding the grey 39 "MX1A-D1NN" or the grey 37 "MX1A-21NN"? You always just say "The grey switch" without specifying which one. There have been 3 different greys - 36, 37, and 39 that are click, linear, and tactile respectively. If you are truly adding the grey 39 "MX1A-D1NN" and the price is 0.45EUR, then that beats my price. And all these orders here should be converted over to the "Phantom switch group buy". But there are only like 400 ordered as of yet. Would that raise the price much?

What's by the way stiffer for the greys? Just the spring, or the tactile bump, too? (Meaning, would it be possible to create greys with grey spring + Clear stem or not)

It is commonly believed that the grey shaft is the same as the clear shaft, except that it is grey colored. And that the spring is the only thing that's different - harder. Which would mean that you could take a clear shaft and a grey spring and make an equivalent switch. But as far as I know this has never been scientifically measured and proven.

What a pity. I'm still looking for something to get a higher tactile bump into Cherry MX. Guess I'll end up recycling buckling springs, lol.

I don't think buckling springs will fit into an mx switch, though I've never tried. So are you saying you want a shaft that has a more pronounced plastic bump than clears? Or that you are switching to buckling springs instead of mx?

Buckling springs on a board with NKRO + Cherry MX Keycap compatibility (the nicest caps are for MX after all), or a more tactile shaft, whatever :P
I've never seen the bottom of an IBM cap though, don't know what's possible there. (man I need a board of my own, if they just weren't so expensive)
