Appropriate Alu alloy/thickness for case panels?
« on: Thu, 22 March 2012, 23:01:55 »
So I figured there's a few mech. eng. types hanging around that might be willing to give me a hand with something...

I'm working on designing a custom PC case made of aluminum.  Trying to find information on an appropriate alloy and thickness for what I'm trying to accomplish. None of the panels will have bends/folds however I may be brazing on 6061 extrusions near some of the edges to facilitate attachment to the case frame.

I'd like for the panels to be as thin/light as possible without being ridiculously flexy. The 2 largest sides are ~17.5 x 15 inches. I'm looking at 3003H14 and 6061T6 in .032, .040, .050, .063, .080, and .090 thicknesses. From what I've been looking at I should be able to do .050 but I'd like some fresh eyes on the idea.  I do plan on attaching adhesive backed sound dampening material like AcoustiPack.
