So about the switch wear part, are you going to reassemble the switches afterwards? Or is this simply a rust test?

Also, WTF happened to that IBM spring?

This seems like it might just turn out as a useful test. Those springs "could" rust, but I might not be alive when it happens.
The first thing I thought, was that you would decide with the test if water or Windex was useful or not. Do you hope to eventually decide that too?

Just as a point of reference, what are the staples and nails? Galvanized steel? They haven't done anything either. Do you have an uncoated steel item you can use as a control?

What are the leaves in the cherry switches? I had thought they were copper but if they are attracted to magnets that can't be the case.

If it's sticking to a magnet, then it's got iron in it. Maybe a copper plated steel?

I thought that the Cherry ad copy implied that the MX series switches had gold plated contacts. At least that's what I ASSumed that "MX gold crosspoint contacts" meant gold plating on the working bits. Now what "crosspoint" means I have no idea.

Staring into the remains of this poor MX8100 that I just savaged for its caps, stems, and springs, the little contacty bits certainly look as though they may be gold plated. Anyone have some HCl, HNO3, and a microscope that I could borrow for a few?

You shouldn't use metal (nails) to mount the stuff on the wood :3

have you tried an oxidizer or accelerant on new springs? would give quicker and more extreme results.
