Cherry G84-4100 UK Layout
« on: Fri, 27 April 2012, 15:33:41 »
Hi guys,

I've just bought a Cherry G84-4100 UK Layout (I guess) from keyboardco. It is the one on the link. The thing is the board I was using before that was a Topre USA Topre Realforce 86U with Englih US layout. Once I plugged  the Cherry I realised that some keys don't yield the characters on the caps as expected.

Which specific layout (if UK one) should I select/add from the regional settings on windows 7?

Cheers
Boards that I have
    1. Kinesis Advantage Pro x 2 (1 to go)
    2. Topre ReAlforce 86U
    3. SIIG Minitouch (Not the GeekHack one sigh!)

Boards I wish to have
    1. Filco FKB 89 J
    2. Topre MD01B0
        Both owned by  rdjack21  :)). I envy him :))

It's a US ANSI board, so select US or US Intl from keymap if you need to have the legends match. Otherwise you can use it with the UK keymap and just be missing the \| key ignoring the key legends.

Hi,

The upper numeric line and some other keys pause the problem. eg. shift+3 gives # instead of pound sterling sign. The tilda and hash key above the enter key gives \| while the \| key is yielding the same. So we loose some characters...

Yes, if you use UK layout on ANSI board you loose the \| key next to Z since is doesn't physically exist. Many of my UK friends use modified US keymap, with making the £ as the shifted character over the 4 with the $ as an alt gr character. You can use MSKLC to accomplish this or Xmodmap if on nix. Or maybe one of the UK folks that use that can even send you their keymap file?

It's a UK layout - works fine with the 'United Kingdom' setting (or 'United Kingdom Extended', if you want a kind of UK version of United States-International).

(lysol - check the link - the \| key is just left of the spacebar)

LOL. My bad, I get so used to the normal positioning and people asking about ANSI... So that is technically a UK specific layout, so I am not sure why it wouldn't be outputting as expected. Almost sounds like what happens when you plug in a US keyboard with UK keymap selected. Otherwise I really don't know.

Cheers mate,

I'll give it a shot. I've already added UK Ext'd maybe I didn't do it properly. Mistake by my part.

Thank you all....

If the Win7 input settings dialog is as cryptic as the WinXP one, that doesn't surprise me! Try removing the US layout (if you don't want to switch back and forth between them), or show the language toolbar on the task bar and click the keyboard icon to select the one you want.

That's exactly what I did today. I unchecked the US layout from the regional settings. Believe me Win7 is more cryptic. Thank God UK extended is default and checking the UK is sufficient, and you don't need to restart at all.

Cheers again mate
