How is MicroSoft's Sidewinder X4 keyboard?
« on: Tue, 24 April 2012, 23:29:25 »
I read people raving about how nice it is.  Even people who have used mechanical keyboards state it is very good.

How is it and does its rubber-dome technology compare with mechanical keyboards in feel?

Its about the best you can do when it comes to rubberdome (of course excluding topre switches). Its a solid keyboard, but still not mechanical.

I would spend the extra $20-30 on a real mechanical.

It's good for a rubber dome, but mine hasn't been out of the cupboard since I got my first mechanical.

the X4 is now my backup keyboard as I have an MX blue but I have to say the tactile feeback is the best there is for a rubber dome imo.   The macro keys work really well and are very solid (unlike Razers effort).   Backlighting is nice to have but the only gripe I have with it is that every row of keys are in the same plain.   This means that I found it tricky to sometimes land on the right keys as I like to glide my fingers up and down the rows and feel a height difference.   That being said, it's just like a laptop keyboard really (only not quite as low profile) so if you're fine with those you'll be at home with the X4 - for the price it can't be beat.

I rather like the X6, cos the switchable keypad is such an innovative product.
Imagine a mechanical backlit board with the removable numpad, gonna kill all tenkeyless boards in the world.
oops .. sorry wrong topic ...

I like my X4 quite a bit. Literally the best thing I've ever bought on black Friday. I use it at work for the wow-backlight-factor as my corner is usually somewhat dark. It's very easy to type on. I can't speak for the macro keys as I dont use them. Mine ended up being something like 20kro but maybe I wasn't running the test correctly. Either way it's enough for even the most hardcore games unless you play PEKBYOD (press every key before your opponent does). I love the board my only gripe is that the finish is shiny on top and really attracts smudge marks and the like. If that's a dealbreaker on a great dome then so be it but for the price I haven't even seen used mechanical keyboards.
