eth0s, how did you manage to fit a phantom plate inside a Vortex case? The Vortex case needs two little bends at the front and back of the plate to mount and the proper height since there are no standoffs in the case.

I dunno, it fits in there.  Somebody else did it before me and said it works, so I did it too.  I'll try to get some pics.  I haven't soldered the switches yet, so I don't know if it will work, but so far it fits.  Also is fits snug so you don't need to use screws.

well it would be cool if it did work in the end, maybe make some support/stand-offs with some formed Sugru to fit it correctly, im tempted to try when i get my phantom but the word is that no mod will make it work.... be nice to use vortex case instead of the alternatives

Finally done with it... for now. Currently rocking the Cherry white on black DS's with 1x windows keys. I think I like Graphite better on it though. Thoughts?

Where did you get that plate? Are you going Case-less? or is that the case?

The plate is from DanGWanG, the case is non existent at the moment, as I haven't had a chance to get to building mine.

So their cables aren't like Filco where you have to get into the PCB to do it?

The cable plugs into the Teensy 2.0 controller, which uses mini usb.

Anyone put a small mini usb from the teensy to just sticking out a bit, then have a female end on that with another cable going to pc, for quick removal?

I've thought about that, but it depends on the case I'm getting. It's possibly going to be Photekq's, which has a Micro-USB cable out.

Ghetto mounting is never favourable since whatever mounting you use hasn't been designed into the case. It's something you've added yourself, and usually involves breaking the case in some way. Because of this, unless done expertly, it can be messy and insecure which is why I would never do it.

However, a removable cable is still a nice feature which is why I implemented a solid micro usb into my case like intelli has mentioned.

You need to make it within your budget. I'm going to get an expensive case for sure, because you want a custom case to house your custom keyboard, right?

How so? The cable is just a normal mini usb to usb cable. It is full detachable and should be just as easy to modify.

Got it soldered and programmed enough to type a message by shorting where each letter is. Now I just need to get my plate cut and my case made so I can finish it!

I first planned making a case out of oak planks, but instead I started working on a plastic case. The top of the "frankencase" is built from a BTC keyboard that has a slight wave to it. The bottom is made of a Key Tronic OEM which is quite low, which I like. The top is just resting on the bottom now - I have yet to build a way to secure the halves together.

I have not decided which colour to paint the case in. Should I choose try to match the off-white keys, or the modifiers, paint it white or black perhaps ... or should I go full retard and paint it beige to make it look vintage?
A silver Phantom sticker will go above the function key row.

Switches are Cherry MX Clear, lubed with RO-59 ... but I don't notice any difference. :(
The key caps are thick Cherry PBT, lasered (was considerably cheaper than dye-sub). They are German now, but I have bought/won on eBay a Swedish set of thin keycaps with a matching look and I intend to replace only those few keys that differ. I do need a matching space bar too.

nobody commented on how awesome Findecanor's phantom looks, good job

in fact i am surprised there isn't a lot of people sharing their phantoms

--

so here is my first phantom i built. it's my first board that i have built for someone else so i took much more care than i usually would.

- WFD125 Plate
- Vortex Aluminium Case - yes it's possible, requires soldering the teensy as close to board as possible and making standoffs to keep the board in place--i used sugru to do it. you also have to put some electrical tape on the bottom of the back of the pcb that is slightly touching the solder points on the pcb, otherwise may short out
- Blue Switches, Springs swapped with 45g korean springs and stickered - Owner's Request was to have super light clicky switches and this absolutely does the job.
- White switch for spacebar
- Off-center Caps Lock
- Pigtail mini usb cable, allows quick disconnect.

This is going into the owner's own vortex case which is red and he has klaxon keycaps, so for display purposes until he gets back from a trip i used my black vortex case and my own keycaps
- GMK Purple Mods and Green Escape Key
- Cherry Double Shot White on Black (the $10 add on option)

Sorry for the crappy pics, all crappy pics here

Glod, that looks great. That caps set looks like it was a perfect fit for the WFD125 layout. Which key did you map to the backspace?

Btw did you make the firmware for that layout yourself? If you did, I know a few people that are looking for the hex file.

yeah people have been asking me via PM for the WFD125 hex, problem is right now is only got the default ansi fw on it, This was something i built for someone else and he was really serious about him wanting to program it himself.

I could play with it myself and then wipe it before i give it to him in a few weeks but i have been really busy and all over the place. only had time to add those key caps and take some pics. If i end up having time ill def share it in the phantom diy thread. Trying to encourage him to join geekhack also so he can join the discussion lol.

i do also think it's damn good looking, even more so in person, it's so solid and industrial, with the vortex case you could literally kill someone with it (AND NOT DAMAGE THE KEYBOARD :D)

but the interesting thing is that that is not going to be its final form, it was just being testing out caps and the vortex case

it's actually going to look more like this QFR here:

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40937.msg854342#msg854342

because its going to be using the same red case and klaxon caps.

not sure if that still looks good to everyone, the backspace will be replaced with 2 blank white keys i got from SP.

^ I will reiterate, this is not a Phantom, it is a QFR being used a placeholder for the phantom

How much does it cost to build a complete phantom keyboard (including case, pcb, switches, keycaps etc...)?

in USD
pcb 35
plate 20
teensy 18
switches .60 ea (depends on the layout 87x for ansi125)
keycaps ~50
case depends on what you get if you are lucky you can get a filco case for like 35

then you need soldering stuff.

Here is a teaser shot:

Trying to find an ANSI150 layout hex the lazy way before I figure out how to compile my own. Then I'll continue to troubleshoot why some keys are not working.

Probably another 20$ for assembling, switches tuning is extra too. Shipping as well? I think it comes close to 200$

nobody commented on how awesome Findecanor's phantom looks, good job

in fact i am surprised there isn't a lot of people sharing their phantoms

--

so here is my first phantom i built. it's my first board that i have built for someone else so i took much more care than i usually would.

Sorry for the crappy pics, all crappy pics here

side note: the flash on my camera makes the GMK Purple mods look like they are glowing

Wow, that purple and black Cherry combo is stunning.

But the case is anodized, then it shouldn't short circuit anything.
