Second-chance Tsangan Kits
« on: Fri, 14 September 2012, 02:14:53 »
PLEASE READ EVERYTHING BEFORE POSTING

Tsangan kits are all the rage lately, due I suppose to the influx of Korean keyboards which tend to use 1.5x modifiers.  Lots of people are trying to buy used or leftover tsangan kits from recent group buys.  Why not see if there is enough demand to just run some more?  To be honest, I'm not confident this will get off the ground.  But I'd like to give it the old college try.  Interest checks are pointless, so man up and fill out the order form!

For the uninitiated: Modern, standard-layout keyboards like the Filco, Leopold, Rosewill, Poker, Quickfire Rapid, etc. use 1.25x modifier keys, a long right Shift, and a center-mount Caps Lock.  A tsangan kit adapts a particular key set for use with a keyboard that uses 1.5x modifiers, short right Shift, and/or an off-center Caps Lock.  Kind of like the inverse of a moogle kit.  There are some gotchas to a set like this (e.g., the off-center Caps Lock).  So noobs, please: if you're unsure about something please read the thread and then ask if you don't see your question answered.

I have five versions in mind.  Chime in in the thread if you want to add a different variation.  The ones that don't get many orders will be dropped (possibly all of them!)
  • Cream Cheese & Green
  • Red Alert 2.0 (red, white, and grey versions)
  • Cherry replica (white on black)

The RA sets will include an off-center Caps Lock key.  CCnG and Cherry replica will not.  Melissa gave me the following breakdowns. The final cost of your order will include a fee to cover fixed costs such as packing supplies, shipping from SP to me, the legend fee for the Cherry replica "Fn" key, etc.

RA sets
25 sets$25.92
50 sets$17.77
75 sets$15.05
100 sets$13.69
150 sets$12.33
200 sets$11.65

CCnG and Cherry replica
25 sets$25.02
50 sets$17.16
75 sets$14.84
100 sets$13.10
150 sets$11.89
200 sets$11.05

In the interest of transparency due to recent and ongoing discussions on this forum, I will say up front that I am not running this to make money.  The quotes above are the real, raw production cost.  That said, in order to help ensure that I don't lose money (and to simplify invoicing), I will be rounding up the final prices of each set to the nearest dollar.  Depending on how robust the ordering feels, and the final number of orders we reach, I may also buy up extras to the next price tier in order to provide extras after the buy, and to cover lost/damaged keys.  If this happens, I will not mark up the extras after the buy.

Standard shipping options.  Bubble mailer and small USPS Priority box.  I will be using small bubble mailers that will likely fit at most two kits.  More than that will need to use priority shipping.  If you have an extra large order, we can work out shipping to fit your needs.

Bubble mailerPriority
US$3$6
International$5$18

To order, fill out the fancy google form.  If you want to change your order, fill out the form again and PM me to remove your initial order.

I feel like in addition to tsangan kits we need a new mini kit called the "Pure kit" to just get the short shift and the "~`" next to it. I'm getting tired of shelling out for a tsangan kit for two keys.

That should just be added to the base set in my mind.

Just to get an idea, what sort of price is the fees usually?
Anyone tried them on Ducky's before? So tempted, but not sure about the modifiers.

I feel so n00b :D
KBC Poker - Red switches. Noppoo Choc Mini - Black switches. Leopold FC700R (White) - Blue switches. Ducky YOTD - Brown switches. Razer BW - Blue switches and rusted.

Not large.  For the moogle buy I think it came out to less than $2 per order.

Like there's THAT many pure owners out there, not a lot of keyboards requires 1800 shift and when some does it also requires 1.5x mods (ie. MX Mini, MX5000, 1800 series)

I know while you feel "robbed" because you're spending so much on 2 keys you have to understand that the 1800 shift is a very very very small minority

I sympathize with the Pure kit idea, but I have no desire to complicate this buy by designing another kit or changing what has become more or less the standard tsangan kit.

I didn't mean add the kit right now, just something for people to be aware of going forward. Also I thought the Poker was being discontinued or something along those lines so everyone that likes that form factor better get ready for the Pure in the future. I actually didn't like the function layer on the Poker, but I also received it after having a Pure first so I'm not accustomed to Pokers  like some are.

I did get lucky after the red alert sale and acquired Red on grey and red on white short shift and 1x star keys to be Pure compatible "on the cheap". Also got CCnG just in case a miracle ever happens and I'm able to get a set. Maybe there will be extras after this group buy but I'm not going to take any chances.

Any ETA on when you will wrap this up?

I may also buy up extras to the next price tier in order to provide extras after the buy, and to cover lost/damaged keys.  If this happens, I will not mark up the extras after the buy.

You should still mark them up. Not like a Ragnarok-style markup, but a certain percentage. Keep the small profit for your efforts, but if you still don't feel that's right, then donate the profit to GH. That way it's more fair for the people that invested to get to the certain price tier. The people that ride along that don't front money until leftover sale don't deserve the lower price that other people have to pay months ahead of time.

I'm not saying you are right or wrong, and I marked up the Lambda left overs, but I am curious what reasons make you feel this way.

I guess if that's not clear, I'll try to explain it another way. If everyone can get it at the same price no matter what stage of the GB you pay, then why should anyone pay for a set a few months ahead of time and wait for production? Why don't everyone just wait until leftovers to buy it, so that way they can just get it right away? Because if this really was the case, then there would be zero orders to send in for production because everyone is waiting for them to be made first. There needs to be some people that front the money to make the price tier happen, and the more people that front money for sets, the lower the cost for everyone. This is why having the same price for people that needs to pay months in advance vs someone that wait for leftovers is not fair.

just a question - what is the point of the stepped caps on ccng? i thought the base kit came with both stepped and full touch. would it be worth it to drop that key for a price cut?

Heh, pretty much. :P

I added a current count to the second post.  I don't want this to drag on, so I'm going to leave it open for a week.  Anything under 25 orders at that point will be dropped.  Then we'll try for another week to gather more support around what's left.  Then we'll collect and send in the order.

I wonder, why not add PBT space bars?
I have always thought that it is weird to make them in ABS just because the DS caps have to be. Especially since it is, in my opinion, the cap on which shine is easiest to notice. I usually get two shiny spots on it, which is more noticeable than a cap getting evenly shiny. The problem with warped caps is resolved by hairdryer.

Would it be hard to match a PBT space bar in colour with RA2, CCnG, etc?

Yes, the colors are always off.  See KeyboardLover's blue PBT sets, or even the colored Realforce sets.  Mixing the plastic types rubs me the wrong way, anyway.

I'm not splitting hairs here, but people with full touch caps probably have another set, since all sets with full touch caps lock are incmplete since some keys are relengdables.

Plus, step caps lock for cherry black ds is easy to obtain.

If the step caps lock is to be kept, so be it.
