Cherry font
« on: Wed, 19 September 2012, 21:05:12 »
As many of you know I have been working on some Cherry replica sets. During this time I have been collecting photos and scans of Cherry keycaps so I could build a font file. So far I have collected all the necessary characters from US/RU/DE/IT/SP/FR/GB... If you have sets in other languages that have unique characters, please if you can get some high res macro shots or scans to submit for completeness that would be fantastic. Black on white is preferred as it is easier to work with for me. Of course I will share the file with the community for other projects.
Thanks!

Version 1.0 US ANSI is available as .tif format. I will keep improving and adding other language keys as I go along.
These are not perfect, so do not complain. You are free to improve them where needed and share them back :)

I have Spanish set that has those charachter, but actually the most unique key on Portugese is the one next to the backspace. I don't know if that key appears on any other layout but it's not too hard to double up the < > from pretty much any other set. Thanks for checking in.

I have a danish layout if that helps. Any characters you miss from that?

I don't have the nordic Å, Æ or Ø. If you could take some clean straight top down high res shots of those individual keys that would be great.
Thanks.

Now sharing. Feel free to use them for mock ups and your personal projects. All I ask is you say thank you if you choose to use them in new keys by giving me some.

Besides the keycaps, once this is done will I be able to import it to Microsoft Word?  That would be awesome.

Once it is made into a font file you would be able to use it instead of comic sans for sure.

Well, it does ... it's a bit like comic sans or wingdings
and there are not enough TIF's to fill up the entire lowercase alphabet.

Lowercase a..t are "Alt", "Backspace", ...
Uppercase A..Z are keycaps A..Z
Numbers 1..0 are keycaps 1..0
~!@#$%^&*()_+:{}|"<>? are keycaps

use a tool like "charmap" to get an overview.

You want lowercase a..z to be the same as uppercase A..Z ?

That would suck. Maybe have lowercase be Roboto. Aren't they both variations on Helvetica? I wonder how they would look together.

Imho, they won't look very good together.
Roboto has square edges, not rounded.
Roboto is bottom-centered, not top-left aligned.

I think it will be hard to find every character in lower case as they simply never used them all I don't think since only mods and stuff had them. Maybe on some more international layouts? I have many other character from Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Russian, Nordic... etc... just not have the time to make them all uniform yet. For building it into a font, I think the correct character locations should be followed, I would build it off MS Arial Unicode and put all the glyphs, and modifier shift, pgup etc type stuff in the private use area.

I can probably fill in the missing lowercase letters.  I've synthesized a few non-existent letters for new keys already.

I did need them awhile ago, but got them from someone else. I needed them for my US Intl set, which was completed so I only need to get all the legends in the same locations in the upper left for uniformity. Some other charachter I have still not even traced yet though.

Yes I got the Strg keys just yesterday.
