I need to take some better photos, but I finally decided to do Orange Alps, though I may swap them for something else in the future.  I go so used to a 60% and having a Win key that it's taking a little bit getting used to a tenkeyless and layout again.  I got so used to using the Win key that I'll probably have to remap one of the Alts to Win.  The bottom row downward sloped modifiers are also interesting feeling and take some getting used to.

For the stabilizers, I actually didn't use any from an Alps board, but used one from an Omron board instead.

Show Image

If you look at the leg on the stabilizers and if you've played with Alps stabilizers before, you can probably tell why I went with them.  They'll be damn near impossible to remove without breaking them or desoldering all the switches and taking apart the whole board.

Show Image

Show Image

If you look at this picture, you can see that I didn't install the space bar stabilizer thing (it's a small black tube that the post on the spacebar fits into).  When I took the picture, it was off with some clear acrylic paint on it.  For some reason, they don't fit right on the Kingsaver and I've found you need to put something on the legs in order to keep it in place.

I was playing around with the Apple logo that came off the donor board here.  I'm still deciding if I'll keep the Print Screen and Pause caps the way they are or if I'll use a F-row cap for them instead since they're a different profile.  The Alphas are from the same Omron board that I got the stabilizers from and the modifiers are all from a Wang and I got thanks to Akimbr0.

Show Image

And without the Apple logo from the donor board:

Show Image

And you can't tell in the picture, but the Caps Lock uses a 2x3x4mm Pink Water Clear LED.

Damn.. This is so amazing! I really love the orange alps LOOK and you guys say Id probably like the feel. Much excitement.. Cool case and PCB too!

I think the idea is that it allows you to have alphas that feel like PCB mounted switches but on a plate mounted board.

It's not Kanji, it's hanzi used for typing out Mandarin Chinese. This is the Taiwanese layout where they have the caps printed to support three different input types. Check this out for more information.

WHAT KIND OF LOGIC IS THAT, EH?! Clearly, you've already typed on it and don't need it anymore. Plus, if it was YOURS you would've just taken it home with you. CLEARLY, he didn't want you to have it. Learning to type in Mandarin is/was hell. :'(

Or you know, you can use the mainland china method, where everything is spelled out using latin alphabets.

Duck viper grey with Dolch caps.
The grey is slightly blueish. The potato camera plus the lighting is not able to bring out that color

Things I like about this keyboard
Nice HHKB style cutouts.
Great consideration of screw mounts for PCB attachment. Dampens the noise significantly even though i am using 62g clears. On the KMAC, this thing would be noisy as hell. Slightly noisier than an RF silent is how I would put it.
Great case quality. One of the reason i bought this was because of the Duck poker case. I am nit disappointed

Things i do not like about this keyboard
PCB material is awful. I can smell the PCB burning while soldering for the first time. Desoldering for the first time would sometimes cause pads to lift. Consideration should have been made as this is a modder's PCB. It would go through a few soldering/desoldering cycles over its lifetime.

The slope. This keyboard is designed for people who rests their hands on the table while typing. Same height as the leopold fc660c with its feet extended. Might be personal preference but not my preference.

Firmware. Might be that I am an idiot. I cannot figure out how to turn off the layer indicator (caps lock LED) so i desoldered it. Very annoying to have something blinking when you are trying to concentrate.

Things i hate about stabilzers
PCB mount stabilizers on a plate mount keyboard. If the stabilizer wire somehow dislodged from the stabilizer, it would be very hard to put it back. I had to desolder the whole thing before figuring out this. A kind friend recommended me to add toothpicks behind the stabilizer wires. It helps.

Yeah, I do use the mainland method.  The other method was more of a fun experiment that turned into an exercise in futility and frustration last time I was back in Taiwan.  :))

Really nice Viper.  A lot more blue in that gray than I would've thought.

It helps.
Super sexy.

Or you know, you can use the mainland china method, where everything is spelled out using latin alphabets.

Yeah, I do use the mainland method.  The other method was more of a fun experiment that turned into an exercise in futility and frustration last time I was back in Taiwan.  :))

Really nice Viper.  A lot more blue in that gray than I would've thought.

Native mandarin speaker here. I do not know how to use the Taiwanese keyboard.

Can't believe I didn't post here yet. Here is my Duck Orion TKL.

Built by Margon using 'Vintage' Cherry MX Clears from a SkiData. Lubed and stickered with clear switch tops and screw-on Cherry Stabilizers.

Double Clear  :p

GMK keycaps. A combination of SkiData caps and Charred Orange from Originative.
Gotta love the Q @ and M μ legends and the mods without text on Backspace and Tab.
I'll find a use for the relegendable F-row when I start programming it.

Stainless plate + Clear tops = sexy Backglow

I absolutely love your setup. Do you mind saying which keys were actually Skidata and which were the Charred orange? They look so "complete" together!

Looks like this to me as well. Couple indicators: the color difference on the legends, the relegendable F row, the sub legends on some keys like Q and M.

Also, he needs to push that 2 key down some.

I feel it's actually a complete random "I'll pick this, pick that" method, cause I noticed the blackspace, tab are both Skidata as well (lack of letters), so perhaps those are the only 2 Skidata keys for the modifiers.

Also the Skidata has QWERTZ format, so perhaps he is using the charred orange Y, Z too :)

Either way, I think we figured it out... teamwork!
