Welcome aboard xsphat!  As you can see, we are just getting started here.  If you have any forum suggestions, feel free to let us know.

I am planning on setting up a text editor forum here as well (seems fitting).  Stay tuned for the upcoming GeekHack Keyboard Giveaway contest!  :)  (should be kicking that off sometime early next month)

Again, welcome!

Cool site, I like it, thanks for inviting me. I like getting involved with sites when they go live, I have a couple others I am working on, but this is my first keyboard forum. In all truth, I have been looking for something like this.

I'll see if I can help you get some members or at least lurkers from my blog.

Lets see a pic of your favorite keyboard.

I'm actually in Iraq, so my favorite keyboard (a Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro) is safely tucked away stateside.  But I DO have a Model M mini (space saver, 84-key) on it's way over here.  I'm planning on busting out the vinyl dye and doing it up good.  Since I have yet to receive it, here is a teaser.  (I will, of course, visual document the whole coloring process)

That is a great keyboard. I have been wanting one for a while now.

Not to spoil your fun or anything, but Unicomp sells blank key caps for the Model M. I am buying a set on payday. The person I talked to on the phone said a new set would cost $20 USD. He said that I should order online and put in the comments that I want them blank, and what color you want (charcoal or ivory).

Now tell me, since you are apparently up right now, is the Happy Hacking Pro worth the money? How do the switches compare with the IBMs like we have? I am dying to know, but no one around here has one.[/youtube]

That is good info to know.  I have a couple of email queries into them right now.  However, I will not be going that route for this project.  I have a specific color scheme in mind that isn't covered by charcoal nor ivory.  :)

For the cost-conscious, I'd try and find a Model M mini like the one I have on the way.  I think the HHKB Pro has great tactile feedback, and if you really want the space savings (considerably smaller than even the Model M mini), you won't be disappointed.  It's not quite as ear-shatteringly loud as the Model M's (not by a long shot).

Right now I am suffering with a craptastic Dell that came with the computer I'm using.  I can't WAIT for that Model M mini to arrive!

About the Cherry 4100, lets just say this - I put my Model M away. I love it, it has these little black mechanical switches that are short throw and tight, with a satisfying snap as the key strokes register. I can type as fast on it as the Model M, plus I don't get any hand fatigue. The sound is cool to, but not too loud. I love the size, which is why I am considering the Happy Hacking Keyboard.

I think I'm going to buy one with my financial aid money (as a non-trad, I get a decent amount). The cost doesn't scare me if the product is worth it.

My Model M mini is here!!!  It looks to be in great shape...however, some of the keys are sticking.  The "T" and "A" keys are the most noticable.  ClickyKeyboards.com has a 30 day return policy...but I really don't want to have to return it.  (but man, it is practically unusable)  The right arrow key is also having issues.  It only registers a key press about 20% of the time (and that is with deliberate, bottoming out presses).

I have to say right now that I am quite disappointed.  I'll know more when my nut driver arrives and I can properly take this keyboard apart.

Legit question, on these early threads, was it literally just two people? Because that's what it seems in quite a few of them

And actually this was xsphat's first ever post!

Plus it seems iMav "joined" GH just two days before this post was made.

Couldn't this thread have been left in peace for another 6 years before being resurrected again?

Why?

Couldn't this thread have been left in peace for another 6 years before being resurrected again?

Why?

Because.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Oh shiiiiiiiiiiit!

Going back through this thread was fun, nothing but necros and links to necros.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Here's an updated pic of my keyboards. The TKL has Cherry blues, the Leopold has Topre 45g, the Model M is from NASA, which is why it has a Gov't stamp on it, and the the last one is a KBParadice V60 with Matias Quiet Click switches. Full disclosure - it's broken but the replacement is on the way.

I haven't posted this photo recently - it is from the NASA Museum in Huntsville, Alabama.
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

Indeed.

The desire for things that I cannot have is great:
-A keyboard from NASA
-An incredible radio voice

I lie all the time.... I really don't even like keyboards
