Tsangan, are those just non-skull single color clacks in your picture? I've never seen so many of them before. And what are the yellow and dark green ones called?

(2nd from the left and 3rd from the left)

1) this thread (particularly the OP) is epic.

2) CPTBadAss, you should now have a wiki account. I would MORE APPRECIATIVE THAN ANYTHING if you might work with samwisekoi and mashby on migrating this information to the wiki :D

mkawa, I've actually been talking to a few people about getting a wiki page running running. Smallfry and sth have volunteered to help me learn/post things into the wiki. I heard I could ask rkinze (sp?) about getting an account? And I'm working on getting individual pictures of clacks so that we can make a table: Clack color name and then a picture of the clack.

Glad you like the OP  :D

This seems as good a thread as any to ask in, so why are Clacks so rare? There's obviously plenty large of a market for them, so why aren't more produced?

I'm glad you like it.

This seems as good a thread as any to ask in, so why are Clacks so rare? There's obviously plenty large of a market for them, so why aren't more produced?

If we flooded the market with Maseratis or Lambos, would those be as special? I don't think so. Clacks, I feel, are the same way. They're special because they're a little harder to come by and not everyone has one. Plus they look amazing. I wish I could vouch for the quality but I don't have one. The ones that are out there, people don't want to sell.

And I think that Clack has a very small team. I heard he actually has his own equipment to make it. So if he's got a full time job/family/real life obligations, he can't be running injection molding machines or coaxing his gnomes for carvings. And since he's got high quality standards (See his stuff on closed eyes and F2 clacks in the 4Grabs), he needs to take his time making them instead of blasting through the creation. I know from first hand experience that injection molding and other plastic creation tools can be fast, but the faster the machines go, the lower the quality is.

Edit: Like I thought. Check out this post from ClickClack as to how much time he puts into making his caps

The thing that still blows my mind is the attention to detail. I have what I would consider a flawless grey CC. However it wasn't perfect in CC's eyes. He could of easily not put a hole in the back and charge more, but for whatever reason it was not up to his standards. Seeing as how these are limited quantity to begin with, that is impressive. The quality really shows when you put them up against other people doing custom caps. I just got a gas mask in the mail and while cool, it did not look polished at all. It looks like they threw the cheap plastic face on the cheap plastic cap and took a soldering iron to the edges to melt the plastic together. The only angle it looks good is top-down. That brings me to my next point, the material used in making CC's is definitely unique as well. I can't explain it, but it's almost like plastic/ceramic. I cant explain it. I really would like a wasd set because I think they would be good for gaming.

That is his secret that distinguishes him from the rest, while there can be attempts to enter this market with similar products like the gas mask, and brobots, the material composition of the CCs are far superior; it's like comparing regular brands to super luxury items. Also 21 is Midnight Indigo.

I knew it. It's gnome bones. When the elderly gnomes cannot carve anymore, their bones are sacrificed to become the clacks. It's the never ending cycle of ClickClack's gnomes.  :p

Also I think #21 is Midnight Blue. I matched it to the picture in the 4Grabs thread. Midnight Indigo looks to be slightly more purple. I'm going to keep it as Midnight Blue until I get a few more ppl chiming in that its Indigo.

Updated the OP to include a table of contents with some links so you can skip around. Should make navigation a little easier. If you just want to skip to the Colors section, you can now do so. No more scrolling through all the text!

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

But I do not condone rehashing them whenever you want :P Those are right up there with the custom CC's. Pexon has a shot of imersa's hhkb in his cable thread. Check it out!

For anyone who might've joined recently, I've been updating my Loose Pricing Guide section. Please check it out if you're interested in seeing how much a Clack might go for in the classifieds. I've also added a bunch of pictures to the Clack wiki.

hey CPT -- what do you think about a rarity guide rather than a price guide? Something like a 1-10 scale representing the availability of a specific cap? Something seems weird about even a loose price guide. To me it lends credibility to the idea that small pieces of plastic (even handcrafted artisan plastic) are worth more than $30 on the secondhand market, which they clearly have sold for, but not without accounting for the fact that some people just have the money (raised/earned outside of geekhack in 99% of cases) to raise the market value of things without regard to the community's perception of certain products.

I can integrate this with the color list that eth0s made but I won't be taking down the pricing guide. If you want to talk about this more, PM me.

i dont really know enough to be much help... the pricing guide is going to do more harm than good though.
