Inches!

'murica

Actually, those measurements are in inches because Litster's Phantom plate drawings were scaled in inches. Almost every plate drawing I make is scaled in mm, to the chagrin of local metals shops. Now you know. :)

Do all Tipro keyboards use Cherry switches? They sometimes have some weird stepped keys which make me wonder.

Hmm. Maybe someone would know: I know there's a regular milk blue CC and a metallic milk blue CC, I've only seen the metallic in mx but am unsure about the regular. Was regular milk blue Topre only, or does that also exist in mx? I'm pretty positive regular comes in Topre and mx, but metallic is mx only. Also: gum colors(pink/purple) were Topre only runs?

Think so. The caps are very odd on Tipros.

1) Was regular milk blue Topre only, or does that also exist in mx? I'm pretty positive regular comes in Topre and mx, but metallic is mx only.

2)gum colors(pink/purple) were Topre only runs?

1) I think you're right there.
2) No I dont think so. Pretty sure I saw some MX when I was at Keycon.

What does TW mean?

It's an abbreviation for Two Words.  Their meaning is obscure and changes once an hour.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If I got my hands on a Filco TKL plate. Can I make cutouts in the corners like the custom plates so that I can open switch tops? That's how the custom plates work right? There's just extra circular cutouts in the corners of the switch holes?

With all the other crazy stuff in thought maybe it was like a parody.

There were measurements posted above for the switch openings, wouldn't that be what your looking for?

The circular part through me. All I've seen are small rectangular cutouts.

I've had four different phantom plates all with those notches.

I don't see why it wouldn't work.  The extra cutouts just allow the 4 prongs on the top half of the switch cover to clear the plate.  My suggestions would be either small file or a dremel.  If the plate is aluminum be prepared to clean out the cutting tool often whoever method you choose.

Question for myself.  Does anyone know what the dimensions are for the stab locations on a 10u WYSE space bar?

Universal TKL plate has wider rectangular switch openings--not really cut outs.

Although I imagine if you sand off protrusions for switch tabs, you would be able to open your switches.  But it'd be a lot of work, 4x "dips" per switch opening.

in a attempt to answer the question please correct me if I am wrong.

normal cherry switch holes are only square.
look at the corners of the squares above. they have a special pattern in each corner of every cutout.
this is what allows the switches topcover teeth to pass over the bottom housing while still attached to the plate.
If you buy any of the universal tkl plates from WFD/the_beast or have jdcarpe design one.... they all use this cutout pattern.

the one that photoelectric posted about has the cutout for the QFR/Filco controller and will also work with the phantoms.
it is from WFD's latest GB.

WFD has already posted somewhere else in this thread stating the locations that would need to be cutout of previous versions of the TKL plates to make them as "universal" as this one.

edit2: photoelectric's pic is R2. and spamrays is R1. I was right the first time. sorry.

This should work fine. just test every switch cutout with a spare switch as you go.

I see guys are connecting the two halves for an ergo dox via TRRS connectors.  Are they just using that plug as an alternative to a USB connector?  Also since there wouldn't be enough terminals on the connector for this to be for the matrix I would assume that it is just so the two Teensy controllers to communicate.  Would it be possible to go this route to connect just the right side of an ergo dox to a modified TKL layout board that also has the "F" keys removed with a Teensy 2.0 in the TKL or is there not enough pins for that?

The ErgoDox left half doesn't have a Teensy, the TRRS connector connects the two halves using an expander IC.

Excellent info thanx JD.  I would assume then that the expander IC just wires into the Teensy that is in the right half then?  If it does would there be enough pins left after a TKL minus F row to plug just the left half into a Teensy 2.0?

Thought about starting a new thread, but I will post here.

Just looking for some opinions of spring weights for Ergo clears.  I have heard and experienced spring weighs that are so light they cause the slider to return very slowly or catch below the bump. If you know what I mean.  I want some lighter springs in my clear switches and I would to get others opinions on the stickiness of spring weights.

I heard tell that the stickiness might have been caused by the lubrication being used as opposed to the light weight springs.

I wrote about this in my review Prdlm2009 but I believe that anything under MX Black springs for ergo-clears has a bit of a sticky issue. Especially with the really light springs. i3oilermaker's QFR at Chicagoland/Gurnee was horribly sticky. Think those had 55g springs.

The king of springs is here.

Yes, lube is known to cause stickiness if you're using a poor mixture (notably, too much grease)

For me personally, I think 60g (red/blue/brown spring) ergo clears is fine but requires lube. But with this set up it loses a bit of its tactility, and is instead a smooth bump. Unlubed, it's definitely noticeably sticky.
55g is a bit harder to do, but I know some people have it where it doesn't stick as much. Anything lighter I don't think would be good at all. Definitely requires proper application of lube.
62g silver is alright, it gets a little bit more crisp. Seems to be the most popular choice, that little added weight helps with the stickiness but doesn't change much from the good old ergo clear.
65g I hear is a bit too heavy for some people's taste, although completely relieves the switch of the sticky feeling. This and Panda Clears seems to be a good choice for people who like heavier switches but dislike stock clears.
62g gold, I always say, is absolutely perfect. I've described it as the "63.5g" spring, where it's just in between 62g silver and 65g. Lubed or unlubed, no stick at all, and good on the fingers.

Who designed the Round 1 Al plate for the Phantom?
I'm sure there was some combined effort but I know I've seen Litster's name mentioned.

Yes, it was Litster.

I just wanted to give credit where credit is due: it was bpiphany that designed the original phantom 1x switch holes, and the modifier cutouts were directly from cherry's design on their website. BiNiaRiS was the one that sourced a manufacturer to get them made, and litster tested the prototype made from bpiphany's design. All 3 of them had contributions of the original phantom plate.

Cool. I'm going to buy a cheapo Dremel and see how it goes then.

I'm going to save you the trouble and time by saying don't bother trying.

All stock mass-produced plates are steel, not softer aluminum. Have you tried to dremel out steel before? Each switch hole requires you to dremel out 4 slots, so that's 348 slots you'll have to shave out.

Lol, introduces himself as the king of springs.  Thanks guys.

Basically, I'm looking for as light as possible without consistent stickiness issues.

Thanks.  I might buy a couple different weights between 60g and 65g and play around with them.  I tried those 55g springs and definitely felt some issues.

Hi all,

I have been lurking on Geekhack for some time and have my heart set on a HHKB Pro 2. I have a quick question regarding it. Is it possible to type the € or £ symbols on a HHKB Pro 2? I need those symbols somewhat regularly and it would be nice to be able to use them relatively quickly. I believe you would be unable to produce those symbols using Alt+0128 and Alt+0163 respectively as they require either a numpad or a Fn equivalent. Do I understand correctly? Would it be a case of copying and pasting those symbols if I need to use them?

Perhaps I should spring for a Realforce 23U as well? Although that seems a touch extreme and more expense.

Thanks for your help.

You can use a program called autohotkey to bind those keys to a key or key combination.

For example you could set it to tab+3.

Also, welcome to geekhack :)

Thanks for that. I never really thought about setting up some hotkeys. Certainly cheaper than a separate Realforce numpad.

So, now that I decided that I want springs, where do I get them?  All I can find is Originative.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

It's really down to that and GBs. Also I also second 62g springs for Clears.

I'm still a bigger proponent of 65g and 67g springs, but to each their own.

I'd just go ahead and buy both 65g and 62g springs then you can decide on your own.  I like both personally.  Not really sure which one I favor more.  I had 65g in until last night when I desoldered them all to lube with the krytox I got from mkawa and switched to 62g.

The 62g had just a little too much hang on the rebound for me.  The 65g gets rid of that and the 67g just feels good to me.  It's all personal preference though.

Does anyone know what profile the wasdkeyboard keycaps are? I'm looking at signature plastics' page for reference:

http://keycapsdirect.com/key-caps.php

I have parts of the raindrop set and lily set, and they are both lower profile than the wasdkeyboard's sets. this doesn't bother me too much, but i prefer the higher profile'd ones. I think the lily set is DCS, so does that mean the wasdkeyboard's caps are KT? they are the only "high profile" caps that aren't spherical.

thanks :]

OEM profile. They're taller than SPs DCS profile.

I agree, 62g felt just a bit sticky.

On a different topic, how do you guys usually ship a full size keyboard? so far I've been using the long rectangle ReadyPost boxes that you can get at the USPS store but I want to see if there's a more efficient way.

USPS Game Board Box. I've had boards shipped to me in made up boxes (I.E they cut their box up and fit it around the keyboard), or huge boxes but that USPS box worked the best for me.

Haven't tried that one, thanks.
