G80-18xx 100% Open Source Acrylic Case
« on: Sat, 07 September 2013, 06:14:19 »
Inspired from the work of others, my own and this thread: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48078 comes the open source project for and acrylic case for the 18xx, thanks to TEAM REDLINE who may soon provide a PCB for the 1800.

Compatibility for design so far:
DesignPCBPlate
Leeku PCBDoneN/A
Beast's PlateN/ADone

This is the first version.

It resembles the one on KBDmania and has elements from my Phantom case as well.

I would greatly appreciate if someone can post dimensions/pictures or guide me to them for Cherry's G80-18xx, so I can make the case compatible with the PCB on those as well.

I'm not sure if you going to be able to make the same case work for both the new PCB's and the originals. And also do we know if the beast's plate will even work with the newly designed PCB?

The PCB is available on KBD, I checked and it should work, since the layout is exactly the same.

As for the same case working for new and old case, I would like to see the differences first and then see if the same case would work or not.

The post where you have a picture of the parts to your case? That's not readable on the Nostalgia theme.

Edit: for 1800 dimensions, you can try PMing inlikeflynn

I'll repost the pictures with a white BG?

I'll PM flynn, but I think he is quite busy, what I am looking for are shots of the PCB and its dimensions, so if anyone can help, that would be great.

I was able to click on the image, and it displays for me with a white background.  Also allowed me to expand the image so I could see quite a bit of detail.

MOZ i'm very interested in what you come up with here! :)

The cherry G80-18xx's all  have a separate daughter board connected with 2 different ribbon cables that goes underneath the main PCB with all of the switches. That is what takes up a lot of extra room under the main PCB and will make it more difficult to design a case around.

Take a look at some of the images in this thread (http://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/g80-18xx-controller-replacement-t4534.html) where imp designed a custom 1800 controller daughter board

The other problem is that not all daughter boards are the same size and dimensions....there are at least 3 or 4 different variations that I know of out there. Plus if its an 186x one it will have the 2 USB ports in the middle back of the case as well. the only common thing between them is going to be the mount points, which are mostly just plastic tabs and maybe 1 screw whole. I'll see about getting you some better pictures here this week sometime at least to look at, but I think a case would pretty much need to have the entire bottom open for the various daughter boards to fit...

Thanks flynn. I'll have a look at that. And you can take your time with the pictures as I am a little busy this week too.

The image that pops up is very small and it was hard for me to see all the detail. I've got pretty bad eyes so the larger image in post 2 would be better for me :3

Fixed the image.

One recommendation I require is, for the PCB and plate cutouts, how much allowance should I have? At the moment I have 1.5-2mm, I think this is too much, and feel that for the plate I should have it .2mm smaller than the plate dimensions, as laser cut acrylic seem to have a very high tolerance, because the acrylic is literally melted at the laser points. For the PCB layer I will leave it as it is.

Are there tolerances on the Cherry sheets? I agree with you that 1.5mm - 2mm seems to be a bit much.

I don't follow.

The tolerance mentioned in my previous post is not for the switch cutouts, but the rectangular ones for the complete PCB and complete plates.

Anyone wanting to make an 1800 case for Cherry pcb's then I'm in.

Please let me know when you will progress to payment.  I am interested in a pcb with Winkey availability.

YES, I am still in love with the G80-1800 series.  My favourite right now - is the 1865 model  :thumb: .

I am also waiting for the Leeku PC to try my Magic School Bus case. That uses the same plate from this case.

I got time to test the design with my PCB, only problem I see so far is the capacitor on PCB is top facing and slightly more than 3mm tall, so it interacts with the acrylic plate, I will add a notch over there and update the design.

Yes, I did. I built the Magic School Bus case using this same design, only difference being, outer layers were different, so it allows me to use a different case in the future.

The plate used is the one as seen above with a small slit drilled for the capacitor.

The correct files.

Please give me a while to do that since I have the same backup as the file in the OP, and not the one the that I used, and that version died when my HDD got burnt.  :(

Hey, totally understandable. I guess I was hoping you would have the files somewhere so I could have it cut here. But if that died with your computer... then take your time to get your life on the right track again. Keyboard fanatics can wait. ;)

Is it possible for these to be made with win key?  I'm a newbie so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here, but looking for this in ANSI layout with win key.  Love the layout of this board.

Not making these, files are uploaded in the OP. I just need to edit one small thing, make a small cutout for the large through hole crystal on the plate layer.

Nope. It needs the cutout. I'm using it with a  Leeku PCB, put I drilled out the cutout for the crystal.

I'll try to update the file and upload it this weekend.
