Just had a brilliant idea.
« on: Thu, 24 October 2013, 13:32:49 »
I don't mind if someone steals this idea since I don't want to do the research on which magnets to use, what glue, and where to get the other parts.

Has anyone ever super glued the tops of cherry mx stems onto small magnets so keycaps could be mounted on a fridge (or any other metal surface) kinda like the magnetic poetry sets?  Why confine our keycaps to just our keyboards?

On my old collector sets I included swappable stems for MX and Topre that had magnets in them. They were provided with either one cc plate case (for multiples) or one cc stand. I will look around to see if I can find a photo or just take a photo later and post it. The initial idea was that you could store your keys then on the fridge for fun when your not using those ones or combine them on an interesting 2D or 3D platform. I didn't get a lot of motivating feedback at the time so I didn't keep making them. Maybe I will pick it up again, we shall see. Lulz and I just remembered "cling" (aka magneto, magnaclack), which was a cc variant with magnet inside it. That one was really not popular. Who knew people actually wanted them on the keyboard. =P

While we're at it, we can also:

-Drill holes in them and wear them on our shoelaces
-Glue them together to make coasters
-Drill holes in them and make beaded curtains out of them
-Use them as knife rests
-Attach tongue depressors to them and make puppets
-Use them as diffusers for LEDs.
-Use them as mosaic tiles
-Glue them back to back and make toe spacers
-Glue them to our fingers so our hands can tap dance.

Make a handbag out of them.
Make clothes out of them.
Make a chair out of them.

If I had more time I'd dig the GH links out.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

As I mentioned earlier-

Can't find the Topre version, but that doesn't surprise me too much. Between moving and reorganizing everything I'm surprised I can find anything.

Uh yeah, that swappable, magnetic stem is genius. You can enjoy your Clacks and other keycaps on your fridge AND on your keyboards. The caps don't have to only hang out in their box and on keyboards!

Can we make this a thing, please? I would buy a bunch of them to use at school.

I have bought several cheap-ass Packard Bell keyboards with MX-compatible caps. They are pretty poor, but good for experiments.

There is a little plunger type of stem that has 4 "feet" and is loose when you break the board open. You could harvest 100+ of them per board, along with the keycaps, and hot-glue the stems to magnets. The entire assembly would end up being fairly tall, but it would be easy.

I also epoxied them to a baking pan to make a Retro-briting tray.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"
