And to think MX Super Blacks would be heavy...
« on: Sun, 26 January 2014, 20:51:17 »
So I using my ratcheting screwdriver yesterday, and the end that held the screw bits popped off and broke. Inside I found a spring...
Just from looking at the coils, I knew that it would be a stiff spring. Trying to depress it was nearly impossible without a housing. So I brought it back home and decided to play around with it, seeing if it would fit in an MX Switch  :p

MX Blue spring on the left, Screwdriver spring on the right. It's a tad thicker and taller than regular MX Springs, but it fits in an MX switch.

Top View:

Depressing the switch:

Regular coins/small weights wouldn't be able to depress the switch. Even a 13" macbook air couldn't depress it all the way, and that thing weighs 1350g+

What should I do with the spring? I think I'll name it Stiffy  :))

Mega black?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Mega black?

MX Super blacks actuate at 150g, this spring probably actuates at 10x the weight

I'm really curious what the bottom out force of it is...

I think my pinkie would die before I could complete a run of 10fastfingers.

You really have to focus a lot of strength on each key...I would probably average under 30WPM if I used these springs on the alphas. I usually average ~110WPM

Edit: I just tried actuating the keychain with my pinkie. It hurts ;-; I don't think it even went past 2mm without using my arm's weight to press it down.

Only have 1 pinkie-killing spring unfortunately.

Who needs a "Windows" lock when you have this spring?  :p

If anyone can type 100+WPM with that layout, then you would be my hero.

Only have 1 spring. If I had enough for a keyboard, I'd definitely make one for kicks.
