Gaming on Topre
« on: Tue, 04 March 2014, 12:23:27 »
I'm writing this from an all 45-g Realforce 87.  I don't game anymore, but I thought I'd put it out there:

If you mod this board via this (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49046.0), the shortened actuation distance and the lightness of the 45g makes for a nice environment for low-resistance, rapid presses.

I'm not sure how it measures up to the time-tested cherry switches, but if you want a topre to type on but also game, I recommend you try it.

Yeah, I game on my 45g un-modded Realforce with zero problems.

Same here.  The shorter distance would loan itself well to a gamer though.  I posted this, in case somebody wanted to try it out

Would the main keys (WASD) end up feeling more worn down from all the gaming that I would do? Or am I being paranoid?

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That's probably what would happen.

OP: I don't like gaming on Topre because it doesn't let me float my switches like MX.

Lately moreso Dawngate and TF2, not DotA.

And a little hearthstone, but that's not exactly a keyboard intensive game.

I'm betting that this would also lower the actuation force a bit. On Topre switches, the peak force is at the top of the "bump." By adding one of the pads, you would probably already be a little bit into the bump.

Correct! I can feel the actuation is significantly reduced.  I wish I wasn't too busy to SC2 anymore :(

This is actually really interesting, because I think what makes Topre a lot less gaming friendly is the differences with actuation. Cherry switches can actuate a lot earlier, or at least feel that way, and I think that lends itself to gaming a lot better. I'll look into this mod though, looks interesting. Gaming is the only thing keeping me from abandoning my Cherry boards.

I think the actuation point is about the same...

I don't like gaming on my Topre but it isn't about performance for me..it is about feel..I'm not sure what it is, I just don't like using it...or I should say I just strongly prefer Cherry for gaming...I just use my Topres for work related stuff...

While the actuation points are similar, by nature of Topre I can't really actuate the same way I can with Cherry. If I press the keys slowly and really carefully, I can actuate around the same place, but in application, I press much farther on Topre than I do with Cherry.

You mean you can't stop yourself at around actuation...that is probably true..but probably pretty irrelevant...I don't know any gamers that try to stop themselves at actuation rather than just hit bottom...It just isn't worth trying to do that...

I don't try to stop at actuation when I game, I do it naturally with Cherry switches, but not with Topre. It may be irrelevant to you, but obviously many people agree that Topre isn't a very good gaming switch, and actuation is the reason I personally don't prefer it.

Which games are you talking about?  FPS I can see it..RTS I can not..a lot of games offer no advantage for doing so which is why a lot of people make sure it actuates by going beyond it.

I don't like Topre for gaming either..but not for the reasons you mentioned..I just don't think it feels right.  It isn't the actuation you have an issue with though..it is the collapsing of the dome which has nothing to do with the actuation point..

I didn't like Topre for gaming at first either - it felt unresponsive compared to an MX switch. I have since sold all my Cherry boards and game on my Topre boards just fine!

Oh absolutely, that's why I don't sell any of my multitudes of keyboards  :))  But in all seriousness, I played counter strike and starcraft 2 pretty extensively on my HHKB and didn't notice any difference over a year or so of heavy us in the wasd cluster or 'e' '3' or '4', which are all very common keys for me in starcraft.  I actually really liked it for both games.  Neither ones really need the f-row, and the actuation wasn't an issue for me, although I have pretty heavy fingers.  I always bottom out.

You mustn't play Zerg then, as F keys (bound to camera locations) are almost essential for most modern Queen inject methods and just plain useful in general.

Yeah I only play Z at a low level.   I rebound my camera hotkeys to some alpha-numeric keys that I could still reach control at.  I didn't use them all that much for toss and terran.  For those two races I'd say they're less essential.  That may just be me though.  For a while, I was no slouch at the game either  ;)

I sencond that - Which is true for about 99.9% of the population on 99.9% of the games.
It's funny how the Razer marketing folks will try to make you believe otherwise.

But regardless of the switches, some gamers (like me) required a numpad.

Indeed it is... I moved from a QFR with MX Reds to an FC660C and haven't had any issues in the transition. I play a lot of Dota 2 and Titanfall and the thock is marvelous for both games. :D
