You find yourself on an internet forum.  Threads surround you on all sides, pressing in on you as if demanding to be read.  Group buys appear to the west, off in the distance.  You feel an itching sensation in your wallet.  There is a reply button here.

> reply
I don't know how to do that

> click reply button
A text field appears

> type
What do you want to type?

> troll thread
You attempt to rustle jimmies by spamming pictures of VT220 terminals combined with baseless assertions, and unsolicited advice.
mod edit: You have been eaten by a grue

We were using imode and wap/wap2 lightweight (for mobile browsing, hence the phone) versions of the forum because lynx doesn't work as well with the full version of the site.

I will soon have a WYSE Wy-50 terminal connected to a *nix box of some fashion. Maybe this thread will be for posts from ANY physical text-based terminal (non emulated). Yay!

Not maybe.  I've modified the thread title accordingly.  :)

Okay, no more posts from me that aren't from a terminal.

Did you try powering it up? You should at least be able to get into the F3 menu if you have the keyboard.

Haven't even tried.  At the moment I have nothing to connect it to either.

I also have the manual lying around somewhere.

And an HP 700/96 here at work that I can take any time I want.

Keyspan USB Serial Adapter (works great in linux, bsd, osx, etc)

Then you just need (an epic daisy chain) the 25 pin (iirc) female -> null modem cable -> keyspan -> usb

oh, and the appropriate line for getty, etc

Apparently the PS/2 to USB adaptor I got from mkawa a while back is also a serial to USB convertor, but I haven't explored that avenue yet.

Actually a working terminal would be useful now - my other half's monitor died so she took the one from my server.

You going to rewire one of the orihalcon ones? then it would show up as a no-name POS device IIRC (I have a few of those). I would just get a keyspan, like I said, works really well in linux.

Well, looks like us WYSE guys are screwed. Maybe. The WYSE 50 does not have emulation for VT100, VT220, etc. And the terminfo data for the WYSE 50 is missing from modern Linux distros, Ubuntu anyway (from /lib/terminfo). Maybe I can create a termcap file with the correct ESC sequences to compile using 'tic' into the correct terminfo data. We shall see. As of now, I can log in, but I can't run lynx at all, and any scrolling pages are garbled.

Or maybe I'll wait until my WYSE 85 terminal arrives, since it has VT100 emulation built in. :)

No, no, it was an IdInnovation PS/2 to USB adaptor, one of these.

IIRC mine has orange phosphor.

Waiiiit a minute, are you sure we can't emulate VT100?  My dad was boasting about how the WY-50 could emulate the VT100.  As always, it's possible he's wrong  :))  but it sure would be nice if he weren't!

Last time I looked (admittedly quite a few years ago) Linux had a database of thousands of different terminals!

For some inane reason, modern Linux distros don't seem to include terminfo data for older terminals. They do include support for VT100, though. Why is it that BSD seems to have the correct terminfo, but Linux doesn't? I found some termcap data for the WYSE 50, but I think you have to compile it to use it. So I'm looking at that now. I really want to use Ubuntu/Debian with this thing.

In other news, my WYSE 85 clone (Triad) terminal arrived today. It didn't include a keyboard, but I have a WYSE 85 keyboard that is in pieces. I just need to solder switches into it. :)

It's true.  The latest Linux distros have removed all but a handful of the terminal definitions.  AND they switched to systemd!  If you guys are interested, I'll post up a step-by-step for the latest Fedora 20.

Here is a log of getting an IBM 3151 terminal working with a usb serial adapter on Fedora 19 which uses systemd.  This should work on Fedora 20, too.
Code: [Select]
become root
$ sudo su -
disable modem manager
# mv /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.ModemManager.service \
/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.ModemManager.service.disable
# killall modem-manager
the following assumes that your usb-to-serial adapter is detected as /dev/ttyUSB0
# cp /usr/lib/systemd/system/serial-getty@.service /etc/systemd/system/serial-getty@ttyUSB0.service
edit /etc/systemd/system/serial-getty@ttyUSB0.service
    ExecStart=-/sbin/agetty -L -i -a myuser -s %I 9600 ibm3151
start the getty service
# systemctl --system daemon-reload
# systemctl start serial-getty@ttyUSB0.service
download and view terminfo file
# wget http://invisible-island.net/datafiles/current/terminfo.src.gz
copy and paste entries for ibm3151 and all referenced "use=___" entries into ibm3151.terminfo file
# zless terminfo.src.gz
search in less with a forward slash ala:  /ibm3151
install the terminfo
# tic ibm3151.terminfo
check that the entry is installed
# ls /usr/share/terminfo/i/ibm*
# infocmp ibm3151
restart the getty service
# systemctl restart serial-getty@ttyUSB0.service
install some fun terminal programs
# yum install lynx bsd-games

Let me know if something isn't clear.

It might have been more interesting of more people had and/or used VT220s.

RIP indeed :(

I dug mine out, and also a VT420, and my Link terminal too.  I put them somewhere where less dust should fall on them, lest I encounter sufficient opportunity to do something with them.

Too many projects, not enough time.

Posted from my Link terminal via a USB to serial adaptor.  Sadly my VT220 seems to have passed away, despite a valiant attempt to clean it up a week or two ago.
At least the Link has a keyboard with MX blacks :)
