Some might have compatible caps, or a case you could cut apart for a custom PCB project.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

There was a thread for those weird pictures.

A serious reply: I've dismantled some vintage rubber domes. Cables are soldered to better keyboards with cut cables (no idea why some idiots cut cables from fully working keyboards). Metal backplates are used in the garden. I gave rubber dome sheets to a friend to make some ghetto o-rings. I've collected leds from controllers for possible future use. I let cleaned keycaps dry on the membrane foils. Plastic cases and keycaps were recycled.

Why bring Metal back plates to the garden when you can bring the garden to the backplate??

serious response: Lol, well depends if you care about recycling or have time to do that. Time used vs potential money made from working. but, i'm sure making those ghetto orings were annoying to cut/measure lol

In accordance to the prophecy, I have disposed of them in the proper way:

1) Build a boat with said rubber dome keyboards
2) Wait for your beloved mechanicals to somehow break (operator error, water damage, messed up solder job, etc)
3) Put the mech board into the boat
4) Put boat out to sea
5) Use a bow and arrow to light the boat on fire, ensuring your board will be in Valhalla waiting for you
6) Play appropriate music for a Viking funeral, I like Amon Amarth

I feel like I'm the only person who read the prophecy when I joined Geekhack...

I'm fairly sure the Prophecy overrides silly things like state law. Also, the bow and arrow intimidates people who try to mess with my rituals.

I usually send my unwanted keyboards to an e-waste recycler

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I live in a country that was occupied twice and a part of a world war twice in the last 100 years, and that does NOT have the highest amount of waste per capita in the world. Never throw anything away is still a common mindset around here, and honestly, I was super happy to find out that I hadn't trashed those cables.

Dampeners are easy to make like this, if you have the right tools, and they're basically free then, unlike imported dampeners for Cherry MX with $15 shipping.

Fire was already tried.  However, it was with a bow and arrow... flame thrower might work better...

The rubber dome Model M's use the same membranes as the buckling spring ones, so I transplant those membranes since those can go bad on the buckling spring ones.
