Calvin and Hobbes Exhibit at OSU
« on: Sun, 27 July 2014, 00:15:02 »
So I was watching a documentary on Netflix about Calvin and Hobbes called Dear Mr. Watterson. I found out in the first 40 minutes that Bill Watterson was an Ohio native and he had all the originals sent to Ohio State University for safe keeping. Turns out this is the last week that OSU is having an exhibit on those Calvin and Hobbes comics. I've never been so excited to live in Ohio. I'm *DEFINITELY* going to this exhibit either tomorrow or next week....or both. I was so excited I had to post about it. :D

Anyone else a fan of the comics?

The snowmen were always my favorite.

I would go through one of those paperback collection books every night in elementary/middle school. I did not know this existed, and now I'm sad that I can't go. My twitter background's been a T-Rex piloting a fighter jet since its conception, and only one person's been able to link that back to C&H. It's cool though, because it was my best friend that did : ]

Wasn't there a recent blog about a cartoonist who had him step in and take over for like 3 strips? I'll have to find it again

I used to read the strips in the newspaper every day back in the early '90s or so. Love them!

I was a fan growing up and still have a few of the books in the attic (I think hope).  Wonderful memories of Spaceman Spiff and Stupendous Man!  Man...I've gotta look for those books!

If permitted, please do take some pictures of the exhibit.

So I was watching a documentary on Netflix about Calvin and Hobbes called Dear Mr. Watterson.

Thanks for the tip! Hope to see this documentary soon.

I love Calvin and Hobbes, we have a lot of books at home. My most favourite comics are those when Calvin and Susie play adults, and Calvin always messes it up and makes something weird.

But this is my all-time-favourite, it's just perfect:

Problem is he is a Penn State grad. I don't know if he could handle an Ohio State trip. :p
My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

* CPTBadAss doesn't understand college sports rivalries

I still don't understand the Michigan vs Ohio State beef. Nor do I understand the Penn State vs OSU thing.

What I do understand is that I'm going to see Calvin and Hobbes next weekend :D

It was my childhood as well...seeing all these originals in person was incredible. I'm going to go back one day. You can go into the museum and ask them to pull out the drawings for you to handle. :D

I've got pictures too that I may post if I get time today.

Seeing the originals was amazing.

Also, Ohio State is massive. third largest enrollment in the USA.

Didn't know that my alma mater Indiana University is now in the top ten. No wonder all the good desks at the library were always taken.

I love C&H to death and happen to see this thread and I'm so envious of both of you having a chance to view the originals. But tell me, are you just pulling strips out of each casing on the wall or is there more?

Edit: just saw your full Flickr album. Really niceeeeeee!

Those are the originals that were posted at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum at Ohio State University. By originals, I mean the actual drawings that Bill Watterson made and submitted. You could see his erase marks and white out.

The museum has *all* the originals, Bill Watterson sent them all the museum for safe keeping. You can go there and ask to handle the actual originals, not mounted behind glass. I'm going to do that one day.

+1 for C&H.

A pillow fort and flashlight was almost always involved when I read C&H growing up.

Also, Bill Watterson gave a great commencement speech back in the day to his alma mater, Kenyon College, about five years after Calvin and Hobbes got off the ground.  Be careful, it might change your perception of life.
