Ever buy the same keyboard again?
« on: Sun, 10 August 2014, 15:56:50 »
Hello, just curious how many of you have duplicates of the same keyboard? Or keyboards very similar that they are essentially the same. Or even different keyboards but same switches.

I know model M collectors would love having multiples to play with, but what about Filcos and what not?

I've owned a Filco Linear R TKL from a few years ago, loved it so much that I just got a Filco Ninja TKL with Red switches, essentially the same thing! I love my MX reds.

Just curious if any of you guys are weird like me and have duplicates of something, and let me know why!  :)

Have a QFR w/ MX blues at both home and office.

Got them both for less than $60. SO well worth it to double up on these rather than buy a single Filco or other for $120+.
My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

I did it twice. Once with Filcos with browns and once with Realforce Topre. For me it is because I have keyboards in different locations and I spend a lot of time typing on all of them.

I have bought backups 2-3 deep on some of my favorites.

On a couple of occasions, I have sold a keyboard, regretted it, and replaced it.

Outside the concept of the original post, but parallel:

Many times, in collecting "used" stuff, whether it be books, records, tools, vintage electronics, coins, keyboards, or anything else, you try to, or have to, upgrade incrementally.

You buy another copy of something, compare it to the one you already have, keep the better one and sell the lesser one.

I have done that regularly for years. That is a cornerstone of collecting.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

Usually I'll try to get two when I get a good KB for a good price. That way I'll have one to use and one to fix up / restore / convert to USB / and sell.

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Yeah, right.

When you prefer Reagan-era iron, you feel the need for backups, since your favorites may not be easily replaceable.

Modern commodities induce less paranoia, if all it takes is a little cash to start over fresh.

I doubled up on a Model F XT so that I can use one at work and the other at home.  I debated about keeping my Model M for the sake of owning one, but I don't think I'd use it much.  I've decided to sell it.  I like/love the M, but I LOVE the F.  I'd also like to sell some of the other keyboards I have to thin the herd.

I like/love the M, but I LOVE the F.

Everybody should have a Model M. Tweak it, bolt-mod it, get it just the way you want.

That really is the standard by which everything else is measured. And yes, the Model F might go well over that "100" mark for feel.

Space is a premium for me.  If I end up selling the rubber domes first and the M doesn't sell, then I may keep the M.

I have two Ducky Shine with MX blue, one with red backlighting and one with green.  Bought a few months apart.

I have two Model M, one with all keycaps and one with some missing (and also in need of a bolt mod).  Purchased together.

I have QFR MX black and QFS MX green (technically the same thing).  Bought many months apart.

And just one of everything else.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Plus it's a lot cheaper / easier to mod two keyboards at the same time than it is to mod them on separate occasions.

In some cases I have spares so that I can combine them into working ones. This is why I have so many hall effect. The switches are highly modular, and can be combined to make more "reasonable" layouts.

Honestly I'm not a fan of buckling spring, had like five different SSK's and just couldn't get into it. Felt like the key travel was way too high to type quickly.

Unless the Novatouch turns me Topper I dare say I'll be using Ergo-Clears for the rest of my keyboard requirements.

I once used to be a Key Tronic user, wearing them out and replacing with the same model, until they stopped selling them over here.

I found my favourite switch in Cherry MX Clear. Have two kbs plus one in the mail and one to be built.

Bought two IBM M2, trashed one in an attempt to make in TKL. Don't use any buckling spring kb anyway.

I have two Filco MJ2 TKL, one with browns, one with blues.

I have two Pure Pro, one with browns, one with reds.

I have three Realforce: two identical RF87U (ANSI, light touch), and one RF88UB (ISO, firmer). I have silenced all of them myself.

I have two Pokers which are really close, even if they are not the same model. One Poker X and one Poker 2, both with reds. They are similar because I have programmed them with the same layout (GuiFN). The main difference between the two is that the Poker X has no metal plate.

I also have a GH60 which is virtually identical to the Pokers, and programmed with the same layout. It has Cherry MX brown. In my 60% collection, this is the one I prefer.

I tend to have pairs of identical keyboards because I have two workstations in my office: one Mac Pro and one Linux box (actually two Linux boxes connected to a KVM). When I switch keyboards (which I do quite often), I prefer to put identical keyboards of both workstations.

The only worthy keyboards I don't own in pairs are the HHKB Pro 2 type-S and the FC660C (on which I'm typing this post).

I can understand that when something is hard to come by, you may want to purchase while you have the chance and keep it as a backup.

Personally, I have never bought anything as a backup, though some things may rotate into being a backup if they are replaced. Every keyboard I own except for one is sitting on a desk somewhere.

That was sort of my motivation to get a second Model F because I enjoy it so much.  I'm paranoid about it breaking down in the future, and not being to get another (or that it will be too expensive).  My thought is, "get it while it is reasonably priced and available".  I'm selling some of my boards off to offset the cost, as there is no need for them to collect dust and take up space.  Plus, maybe I've become a mechanical keyboard snob.

Personally, I'm all about the switches, so I would rebuy the IBM displaywriter (best switches I've used so far), the IBM XT to mod (second best switches I've used), and the Topre Realforce 55g (3rd best switch).

IBM Displaywriter (82 key) | IBM Model F 4704 (107 key) |  IBM Model F AT x3 | IBM Model F XT | IBM Model F 3104 x2 | IBM 6112884 (Green Tee mount Alps) | Realforce 87u (55g) | IBM Model M 1390131 x2 | IBM Model M (1391401 '88) | Leopold FC500R (MX Browns) | Wang (725-5971) (Salmon Alps) | Acer 6011 (SKCM Blue Alps) | White Fox (65 g Zealios) | XMIT keyboard (Hall Effect)

I wouldn't buy an identical keyboard with the same switches and everything, but I would buy the same model with different switches.

I've bought a few duplicate boards and I have sold boards then bought the same type of board later.

I got another Realforce 87U 55g because I wanted to keep my other 87U silenced for night-use.

I've bought keyboards, sold them, and re-purchased the same keyboard. The most recent is an87UB/55-gram; but this time the 87UB is here to stay.

I have a ducky premier with greens and a ducky banana edition with whites.

Different, but very similar. Dye-sub vs. engraved legends, backlighting, color, and quieter switches are the only real change
HAVE AND WILL KEEP: HHKB - Printed white | Ducky Banana edition - Whites | Model M13 | Unidentified Goodwill keyboard - Simplified black ALPS
TOO BE SOLD: TG3 BL82 - Clears | Wheelwrite 5 - Buckling Springs typewriter
SOLD: Rosewill RK9000 - Blacks | QFR - Blues | Ducky G2 Pro - Greens |
IT WILL BE MINE: Northgate Omnikey - White ALPS

I would buy another QuickFire Rapid if they still made them with blacks. Still kick myself for not grabbing one before they were discontinued. Were only 69.99 on amazon

Bought my 2nd CODE in Clear for a friend's gift. However, will probably try a KUL in Clear for my father's gift.

I don't really have any of the issues with pinging that people mention all the time. Either that, or I just don't notice it. I really like the simplistic, white backlit look of the keyboard though. I replaced the keycaps, and I'm big fan of the underglow look.

Mmm... machined aluminum

I've bought a few QFRs when they were ultra cheap, am contemplating buying another hhkb or 2 novatouches when they hit and I've bought realforces at separate times to try/resell.

I also bought my fair share of QFR's, four so far. I have modded them and used parts for other keyboard projects. The QFR cases work great for Phantoms as long as you remove the rubber coating and refinish them.
