INFO + ORDER HERE: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=57263.msg1455582#msg1455582

Awhile ago I had a thread discussing the idea of a SmallFry Tribute cap. I showed some ideas and heard your feedback.

The idea behind this cap is to preserve his memory by donating to his family's chosen cause in his name, to feed the hungry and to help support GeekHack, as we all believe SmallFry would have wanted.

Here is the prototype. Please let me know what you guys think. If you all like it, I will order a few samples to photograph in a few materials.

What a wonderful idea :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

On a related note, what ever became of the Smallfry Set? The white set with yellow trans legends and yellow modifiers?
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I believe that became the "cherry replica" set.

They were orange, actually, not yellow. And they shipped a while back.  I have two sets.

But on an official level, that set was renamed the Cherry Replica set.  Last I heard there was an alternate set that would be called Nate's Set at a later date.  I have no idea what post it was, or where I heard it, so I can't link.  Or maybe I'm mistaken?

Ahhhh, OK. I was just browsing the Smallfry threads and found myself looking at that set and wondering where it had led to as it looked pretty amazing. I am jealous JD.

That would be great Flynn. Thank you. I purposefully left mine at the accident site last year when we paid our respects. It'd be nice to have a "sister key".

And is it just me, or does everyone think of SmallFry when watching a Taylor Swift video? Every time I see one, I can't help but stop and think "Nathan would love this video."

Would it be possible he would recreate the video? For some reason I feel like that is likely.

It's easier for me if everyone places their order, even if you cannot pay right away. I'm trying to get numbers for the extra stuff we are planning on including with the caps, so if you're planning on ordering, please fill out the form! :)

I'm going to put myself out there, on a topic that most people would never wish to say anything negative on, and say this:

I wish this whole "item on top of a normal keycap" phase would pass. It's nice that people are able to make some custom keycaps, but there is nothing desirable to me about a 7 foot tall keycap. You know what was nice about girlDC's caps? They didn't do that. He managed a way to fit the stem in the design of the cap, not fit the design on top of a normal cap.

Now, I'm not saying this is not a great idea, but I think, most especially with a design of a hat, that the cap can be better. Since the inside of a hat is hollow, the stem can stick out of it just fine to engage the switch. This would eliminate the unsightly "normal cap" design of it.

Am I the only one who thinks this?

Oh, and a Topre one is required. Or at the least, buckling spring. Nate like buckling springs.

If you look at my original drawing, I did have it much lower, however, when modeled on a keyboard, I found it hard to see the cap and thought it would be nice to include the rit-dye base of the keycap anyway. I posted these designs quite awhile ago. You could have at any point provided this feedback before I ordered one and spent 2 hours painting it to call it unsightly.

I will see about getting the other switches modeled.

Unfortunately, I took a leave of absence for an amount of time, and have only recently "returned" and saw this.

Anyone who has owned a girlDC cap knows full well you can see them well enough. Also, the vantage point we have over keyboards means your point of not being able to see the cap isn't necessarily true.

I adore the hat itself. I don't mean to take anything away there. I understand everything is pretty much finalized. Just a point of view.

I have a GirlDC cap, among a few others, and I prefer them to be lower profile as well, but except for the whale key which is different from the others in that it is a top-down view of something in which is also based from the bottom, as opposed to a front-view of something from the top, with little room for tilting. The bill of the cap was difficult to see in the number row.

However, if I can get more feedback, I'm happy to lower the cap on the key and see if I can cancel the existing keys in production and start again.
