mouse compliment to a poker 2
« on: Sun, 17 August 2014, 07:46:05 »
Hello, Everybody!  I'm new here.

I recently caught the cherry mx bug.  I have a poker 2 incoming and plan on rocking the RGB caps.  Can anyone give me a recommendation on a complementary mouse, functionally or aesthetically.

Thanks.

the Mionix Avior 7000 / Naos 7000 and Steelseries Rival all have custom LED colour options, could be fun to combine light colours with the RGB caps :p
I think the Mionix mice are better performing though, so depending on your grip, I'd choose one of those.

Ah, cool.  I should also mention, I'm looking for Linux support.

I was looking at the SteelSeries Sensei RAW, with this:  https://github.com/pjanouch/sensei-raw-ctl

And the Rocat Savu seems to have a nice Linux utility:   http://sourceforge.net/projects/roccat/

Any opinions on these, or other Linux mice?

well if you think you won't need to customize it a lot, for Mionix, all the settings are saved onto the built-in memory, so you can set it up on Windows and then never worry about anything when using it in a different OS. :)

the Savu is apparently pretty good, although the Kone Pure optical versions (Military also) are much better it seems, if you don't mind it being a little bit smaller.

Roccat mice have the best GNU/Linux support by far, thanks to Stefan Achatz. Nothing else comes even close AFAIK (i.e. other mice work either as "dumb" mice or you need other OS to configure them). If you care about looks, Kone Pure [Optical|Military] comes in plenty of different colors, apart from the customizable light on its back.

A Roccat may be what I want.  I like the Linux utility.  You guys think it's still worth the upgrade, since I'm not a gamer?

And look... Why did the stupid stock Lenovo mouse have to match so well?

this is the one to get. but yeah it does match really nicely with the red colour haha. the green is ALMOST matching though... well you can set the LED to pulse through all the colours too, so it'd match really well. too bad it's not black :( you need some more gray keycaps and the gray version!

I do think a nice mouse is REALLY improving the computering experince to be honest. I say yay to the Kone Pure optical/military at least :p

I actually really like the look of that setup.

I like to use my old Microsoft Notebook Optical mouse with my 60% board. I think the size matches perfectly. Admittedly, the DPI is too low on it, but I have upgraded mine by replacing the sensor chip :)

Haven't found a good replacement for it yet that is as small and light.

The Razer Salmosa... is made by Razer, as is the Orochi, so those are out. The Roccat Pyra is decent, but after using it for a while I decided it just doesn't fit my hand well, but it could be a good option:

You can replace the blue LED to match the backlight color of your Poker.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

If you do not use it for gaming, and want to stick the the whole "why waste more space than you need to" way of thinking. Then a trackball might also be a good option. Just throwing it out there.

Thanks, but track balls are a no go for me.   I want to point, not push a cursor.   They drive me crazy.

If you're left handed you'd probably want the Roccat Kova and not the Savu or Kone. I knew a left hander when I played COD, he loved the Kova... and he was bloody good too.

Unfortunately, kova is a bit worse quality and the sensor leaves quite a lot to be desired. I wish they made an update to it (other than lua).

Kova looks OK.  Still leaning toward the SteelSeries Sensei RAW.  How bout that rubberized?

Cooler Master Storm Spawn mouse, maybe?
http://gaming.coolermaster.com/en/products/mice/spawn/

And have you thought about getting a mousepad that would work with that setup?

If you're in the UK it would be worth considering the OCUK Mega Mat
I think the red and blue on the logo would go well with the RGB on the Poker II.

Huge mat is huge.

I'm afraid of the sparks that spawn mouse throws.

There is a smaller version of it. It's just that I like having my mouse and keyboard on my mat.

Out of all the mice I have, in terms of going with my Poker II, the Logitech G9 is my favorite (I know, it's quite old). I think a good looking, understated mouse surface improves the aesthetic of your desk as well. I would have preferred if my keyboard came with blank RGB mods but I mean it's not too devastating lol.

So, I ended up getting a SteelSeries Sensei RAW.  This is hooked up, along with the Poker II, to both a desktop and a laptop with an IOGEAR 2 x 4 USB 2.0 Peripheral Sharing Switch.  Great setup for reducing desk clutter.

Hey, Protato.   No picture,  yet.   I should mention I'm still rocking the stock Lenovo mouse like above at work.  This would be the home setup.  I'll take a pic soon.  Promise.

It used to be a prerequisite, editing your XF86Config / xorg.conf file. It was like a test to see if you should be running Linux.  Things are so much easier now!

FYI,  I found out the hard way that you shouldn't be editing it for most things at all, now.   I had a hell of a time trying to figure out how to map my caps lock to control.  It is now a gnome setting you fix by running one command:
Code: [Select]
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options "['ctrl:nocaps', 'compose:ralt', 'terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp']"
That also sets compose key and termination.

I don't think I'd like using a numpad as a mouse.
