New guy from Germany
« on: Tue, 09 September 2014, 11:48:12 »
Hi, hallo, bonjour and hej there everyone!

I'm new here (though I have lurked around a bit before). Currently I am waiting for my first mechanical (since the IBM my family used to have many years ago), a CM Storm QuickFire XT with Cherry MX Green switches and US/ANSI layout.

Why US layout? It's simply better for programming and with the EurKey layout it's great for writing in most European languages as well (which is great as I speak 3 languages and a few words in a couple of others as well).

I already have a bunch of ideas on how to personalize the keyboard further (O-Rings, custom controller and/or Soarer converter as my PC lacks a PS/2 port, and maybe at some point a set of custom keycaps...)

In any case I am a programmer/researcher and mostly write C++ and CUDA, and am also into electronics and audio engineering.

Welcome to GH!

I like that Eurkey layout a lot.

Hey, aren't you guys in Europe supposed to all be speaking Esperanto by now?  That's what the 'Murican Conservatives told us would happen to you.  It starts with the metric system, and then next thing you know, you're speaking Esperanto, and you've turned into a G*d-hating socialist.   I dunno if it's true, 'cuz I never leave the 'Murican Heartland.  Also, I can't read, and I don't want to learn, because you get too many of them liberal ideas when you read.

Thanks eth0s :)

I love that layout, only found it a few months ago, but it grew on me quickly. Being able to type Français, Åhléns and Örtlich without changing layouts is great :)

And on the topic of Esperanto: Some folks dun did try and failed ;)

Yeah, Esperanto is a commie plot to destroy freedom!

But seriously that Eurkey is like a stroke of genius.  If I was an important person, with friends in Europe, I would get that.

You could always start being pretentious (and/or archaic) and using diæreses to spell words like coördinate, coöperate, naïve and Noël!

Oh, make no mistake, God is not popular and we have higher taxes than even Obama could dream of.
However we aren't full blown communists, so we only have an average unemployment that would be considered a disaster in the USA, and we've had it since long before the crash.

Yeah, the EuroKey layout is nice.

Welcome to Geekhack!

The Quickfire XT has a USB interface, so you won't need any converters.

It also has a standard layout, so finding replacement keycaps should not be difficult :)

But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

But it's a regular 6KRO USB interface, how boring.

Yup, that's one of the reasons I chose it :) Can't wait until it arrives... At least it already arrived in Europe (still in England, not Germany though :( )

Do you need more than 6KRO?  I rarely use moire than about 3, although I don't game much any more :(

Need, probably not (though I have a few games which you can play together in coop on a single keyboard, for those running into the limits is very easy). Still want it though ;)

Fair enough!

By teh way, your English is very good if you understand the difference between "need" and "want" (assuming you are a native German speaker, that is) :)

I was born in North Carolina, but I grew up here in Germany. My parents are German though. Oh yeah, I also went to a French elementary school :p
