[Massdrop] Hardwood Wrist Rests
« on: Fri, 19 September 2014, 15:11:27 »
Massdrop is selling 60%, 80%, and 100% hardwood wrist rests in Black Walnut, Brazilian Rosewood, Ebony, or Mexican Golden Sandalwood.

Specs:

Made from solid piece of hardwood
Rubber feet
Maximum thickness: 0.75 in (1.91 cm)
60% Wrist Rest: 11.63 x 3.13 in (29.54 x 7.95 cm)
80% Wrist Rest: 14 x 3.13 in (35.56 x 7.95 cm)
100% Wrist Rest: 17.31 x 3.13 in (43.97 x 7.95 cm)

Unfortunately, I've only purchased brand name wrist rests, so I'm not sure how these wrist rests compare to those made by our artisans services.  Their shape is very similar to my PFU leather wrist rest, which I'm quite use to.  I'm thinking on getting myself one, but I'm having a hard time deciding which one to get.  I'm no wood expert, but they all look quite nice to me.  The varying prices of the wrist rests should be looked into, as I have no idea if they are worth the asking price.  Perhaps some of you guys with more experience with wood can chime in.

In for an ebony 80% if the lowest price is unlocked.

Very tempting. Only issue is what size I should get it in.
Also conflicted between ebony or rosewood.

I'd go with something sustainable instead of ebony.  Support your non-threatened, non-endangered woods and avoid those like ebony that are threatened and often illegally logged.  I recommend starting your research with the wood database since very few places verify the provenance of their wood.

I haven't used wooden wrist rests before, are they comfortable to use? In terms of ergonomics, wouldn't gel wrist rests be better?

I prefer wood as long as the slope is proper to rest the pad of my palm on them instead of my wrist.  The firmness is far more comfortable to me than the gel.

That link of yours nubs is really informative.  :thumb:

I use 2 filco ones, one with my hhkb and another with my tkl. They may be hard being wood and all but typing doesn't really exert much downward pressure on your wrist so it shouldn't really be a problem.
The problem with gel wristrests is they tend to give way under the weight of your hand/ lowerarm, wood doesn't do that.
Wood warms up too, just like gel does to body heat.

I used wooden wrist rest before to transition myself from flat profile keyboard to mechanical. It was fine at first but later my wrist starts to feel pain. Someone suggested(I think rhinofeed in youtube) to just hover your hands over the keyboard. No more pain now. It helps if your keyboard/desk is the same as your elbow. Just my 2c though.

It would be nice if every option didn't double the price.
If today had been a hippo, then you'd really have to worry about tomorrow.

Hardwood is never cheap; and those other options are really high end.

Nubbs: I can't find anything on Mexican golden sandalwood. Do you know anything about its sustainability? I don't want to support logging of endangered woods. Thx.

The problem with wood is that sometimes people use names they made up or only a small subset of people use.  I've never seen that name and can't find anything about it.

Given the small image they put up, it looks like it could be Cocobolo, which is vulnerable but not threatened or endangered.
