That laptop I'd way too thick for normal use.  5cm is just too much. I think those caps are oem as well which is really quite silly I would like it instead if we got a laptop with Matias switches that came with dsa caps.

I'm more worried about what the heck is going on with the tenkey.

It almost looks like a touch-ten key that maybe doubles as the touch pad?

The two buttons at the bottom lead me to believe that that is the touchpad which is really quite innovative imo. I don't really care that we don't get a real tenkey if it means thinning things down. God knows how bad it would be if this was any larger.

I'm thinking more from a functional perspective. You have a widescreen monitor with a touchpad that is in a portrait layout.

Still, if you're someone who can tolerate a laptop this bulky, you won't mind if you have to carry a mouse as well.

I don't get these huge laptops at all. At that point a desktop seems to make more sense to me. Also, if you are going to get a mechanical keyboard in a laptop I would expect the caps to be DSA, it seems like an extraordinarily poor choice to use DCS/OEM. This thing must be a behemoth even when closed up.

In summary, it is just too big.

I'd prbably get a PCMCIA mouse. A laptop this huge would pretty much have to have a pcmcia port on it.

Isn't there a lower profile mechanical key than MX browns? Seems like a solution to a question no one asked.

Still ugly as sin though.

Cherry ML switches are about half as high as mx and have been used in laptops for years.

This site claims to have a source on GPU spec at least.

Okay, that does sound pretty decent.  :thumb:

I still think that the over all experience would be better on a desktop, or at bare minimum a separate monitor. I guess a person could carry this around so that they have their system if they need it, but I think the size and weight take away from the enjoyment. Everyone has different needs though. So while this may not be my cup of tea, I'm sure it suits someone just perfectly. To each there own and all that.

I still prefer Poker+tablet. Occasionally I wish they were integrated, but then I see this beast and its size and weight, and yeah I'm happy with my current setup again.

Even if you build micro ATX, the limiting factor in transporting your desktop a lot will become the screen. You'd have to save the original box or get a specialized carrying bag. Even then you have to find places to set everything up, including speakers if you use those. This thing might weigh 10 pounds, but in the end everyone can carry that, and it comes with a screen and speakers attached to it, so it's much, much easier to carry around and set up than any desktop.

Most of my laptops have been luggables.

Desktop replacement that I can actually do work on.   It would be nice to be able to rely on having a docking station and a 34" monitor so that I could go with a small laptop with a big video card  and plug in my machine at the keyboard monitor and mouse of my choice but traditionally I haven't been able to in a consulting role.

As an employee an obscenely overpowered laptop that I can dock is becoming a bit more appealing but it's still nice to be able to sit down and open a vm, a development ides,  a modelling tool, and a word processor and do some work.

I like having a small laptop in terms in screensize/footprint, but I really don't mind a thick or heavy laptop at all. My thinkpad x220 tablet with the slice battery is about 3 inches thick, and is about 4-5 pounds heavy. Thought I would remove the slice at times when i felt it was too heavy or thick. Nope. I just leave it on. I certainly wouldn't mind adding an extra inch or so and an extra pound to include a mechanical keyboard. As long as I can balance it on one knee and carry it with one hand, it's small enough for me.

I can do without the "gaming" stuff, however.

Also, for those people who use NoScript/RequestPolicy and don't want to jump through hoops to see a picture on engadget:

I'm somewhat puzzled as to what the blank area above the keyboard is intended for, is it because of the monitor's aspect ratio?

I think that's where the laptop components are, since they can't fit below the switches/pcb for the keyboard (which also looks to be lowered compared to the rest of the laptop).

I could actually see the appeal in this laptop myself if it was less gaming orientated and had more of a clean and refined look suitable for business.

As a contractor I have to lug my work laptop in and out of the site on a daily basis and the size of it does not matter too much since I just throw it in a laptop bag and it ends up getting slung in the back of the car. Basically it is a desktop replacement for me.

Not sure about the implementation shown here either though. At least MSI have decided to give it a shot and open it up to the market. Looking forward to seeing reviews.

I wonder if these type of hybrid laptops will find a market, as any enthusiast likely prefers their custom standalone board. Seems targeted at gamers who have only vaguely heard about mechanical boards, but the design may appeal to some.

Yeah for a gaming laptop I would probably leave this out and if anything, use this are for macro keys. Maybe its for accountants that also likes to game when they are done with the audit...

I don't think so. I think these types of things are marketed at gamers because it seems they will pay inordinate amounts of money, in comparison to the average consumer.
